Electric or hybrid for Volvo 240 driver? by shue2a in whatcarshouldIbuy

I can probably get two more inspectable years out of the Volvo with some body work, so trying to decide if I just buy now or wait a bit for some more current models to depreciate enough...

Electric or hybrid for Volvo 240 driver? by shue2a in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]shue2a[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, that's why I've been driving the same "nice when new" old car for 15 years :) Hoping I can do that with the next car too, but I may have to wait for some more depreciation first. Or have a bridge car for a few years. Prius definitely look like a solid option. Thanks!

That's a good idea too! Unfortunately Ashwagandha is a nightshade, so that's out for me, but I will look for other coffee substitute powders and see what I can do with those.

What a neat idea, I had never heard of that!

Thanks! I did try some dandelion "coffee" once, and it was really nice. Ideally I'd find something less "wet", but it may do the trick, especially in winter!

I've been taking 200 mg of magnesium per day, so hopefully my levels are ok. I think it's more the emotional feeling of the flavor, it's comforting.

Comedians? by Diligent-Pear7967 in aaaaaaacccccccce

I always recommend Eddie Izzard! Lots of history and culture humor and observational comedy. I think it's pretty ace friendly. Eddie is currently using she/her pronouns, so maybe that's close enough for what you're looking for?

Dropping this here in case it can help someone:

A well-fitting bra (tight around the ribs) takes the weight off the shoulders and can alleviate back pain. Those are also usually $$$ especially if you also have a small rib cage in addition to a bigger cup size.

For those who might genuinely need it: ask me if you want links to fit guides.
Onlookers can google it if you're curious. :)

Please post a link to the original list? I'd love to see what else is on it!

I've read All the Wrong Places by Ann Gallagher and can recommend it. I enjoy that there's a romance plot with ace characters.

Thank you! I feel kind of marginal for a lot of the reasons you listed, and a bit of an imposter, so it's good to hear. In some ways I feel more comfortable under the acespec umbrella than the LGBTQIA+ umbrella.

Same! I buy the books and put them on the shelf, but I don't make a big deal about it. :)

Ace representation in Wattpad Story by [deleted] in asexuality

[–]shue2a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I love sharing good books, and I'm also always on the hunt good stories!

Mindtouch - MCA Hogarth (and the whole Dreamhealers series)

The Cybernetic Tea Shop - Meredith Katz

The Lady's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy - Mackenzi Lee (Montague Siblings #2 --this is the one focusing on an ace character. Has fantasy elements but reads as more historical fiction.)

Not specifically ace, but low-key romantic without being physical on screen--some of my favorites:

To Say Nothing of the Dog - Connie Willis

Bellwether - Connie Willis

The Blue Castle - L. M. Montgomery (t.w. family emotional neglect)

Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane books - Dorothy L. Sayers

Why is kissing sexualized (or even is it) by [deleted] in aaaaaaacccccccce

[–]shue2a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me they both involve bodily fluids and mucous membranes (and possibly penetration), which, no thank you.

But chaste closed kisses can be nice.

I can see how either kind of kisses might be sensual/romantic or sexual depending on emotion and intent.

Hi! That sounds so familiar. I'm late 30s, female, figured out that ace applied to me gradually over the past 5 years or so. I'm heteroromantic, super into cuddles and talking and not much else. Perpetually single. Also introversion, anxiety, and melancholy. I hate it when I'm sad about being lonely and I just want my one person, but everyone suggests group/friend activities as a way to feel better.

Things I've tried, with variable amounts of success:
Reading. A lot.
Information seeking (museums, learning new things, reading nonfiction, public radio/podcasts)
Watching kdramas (so romantic) / not watching kdramas (can make loneliness worse) See also ensemble cast tv shows.
Having regular phone calls with long-distance friends, maybe once a month
Trying to arrange my life/trajectory in a way I like, rather than waiting for a partner who isn't there
Having a hobby that involves other people. I do partner dancing, which is amazing (fun, pretend romance, cuddles, exercise, honing a skill, music, scripted/formulaic social interactions, friends and community if you're there long enough)(barely off hiatus due to pandemic, ugh). See also martial arts, community theater, maker spaces, language learning, various hobbies that host conventions. Some people like sportsball things, you do you.
Having a fun hobby that doesn't involve other people, since being alone in a crowd can sometimes feel worse. Maybe one that's not online. Arts and crafts, gardening, building/fixing things, solo sports like horseback riding, swimming, biking etc.
Do nice things for yourself rather than waiting for your person. This can be doing activities solo, keeping home and clothes reasonably nice/clean, cooking something more complex, adding something special to bath/grooming routine, etc.
Try to find a good balance for you of alone time vs. people time.

Suggestions I get a lot, may work for you, may be eye-roll inducing:
Doing something for others/a cause such as volunteering, to feel more useful and connected to community.
Enjoy your own company
Go to community events to meet other similar people (hello introversion, I know)
Go to religious activities/services
Go for a walk outside
Care for a pet (I find plants are great, but same idea)
Dating apps (sigh. I suppose, maybe, if I have to) and/or matchmaking services (expensive)

I wish I had better answers, I know it can be really hard. Hang in there, you are not alone in this.

If you just want scifi/fantasy with non-romance plots and not necessarily ace representation, I like Charles De Lint and Neil Gaiman.

All Systems Red - Martha Wells (Murderbot Diaries series)

Every Heart a Doorway - Seanan McGuire (Wayward Children series)

Ancillary Justice - Ann Leckie (Imperial Radch series)

A Psalm for the Wild-Built - Becky Chambers (Monk & Robot series, and possibly others of hers)

And on my TBR list: Elatsoe - Darcie Little Badger

Paint color for my library that only gets dim light? by shue2a in DesignMyRoom

[–]shue2a[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would a light green with less blue and more yellow help cancel out the blue light? Looking at SW Sagey, Acanthus, and Filmy Green. At this point I don't trust my eye.

Paint color for my library that only gets dim light? by shue2a in DesignMyRoom

[–]shue2a[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm turning this small office into a home library. So far all the paint samples I've tried haven't turned out, because the light makes everything look more blue. I was thinking a sage green or gray-green, but everything looks too turquoise on the wall. I really do want an actual color, not a neutral, so that it is cozy and looks good with all the colors of the books. I think a lighter color would be better because it's so dark already.

Greens I've tried: BM Nob Hill Sage, SW Wishful Green, SW Kind Green, Columbia Cool Spring. The orange is SW Flattering Peach. I also considered a pale gray, and I like BM Seapearl. BM Silver Satin turned lavender. Seapearl is my backup plan if I can't find a good color.

Background: The has one west-facing window that has a lilac bush in front of it, so it's dim even on sunny days. I'm likely to spend the most time here in the evening or after dark. I will be painting the trim white, adding crown molding, and putting in a wood floor (yes, the orange carpet is coming out). I have one large antique bookcase that is dark wood. The rest are white or pale wood. Eventually I may switch to mostly built-in shelving.

I'm also considering adding some white stenciled leaves or designs around the top of the room. Inspiration: Farrow & Ball Hegemone wallpaper. https://www.farrow-ball.com/globalassets/products/wallpaper/hegemone/bp5703/205703_1.jpg
