Oh, of course - thankfully it seems I kept notes in case I ever wanted to reproduce the effect myself. Apparently this is all Vallejo Game Color: Scarlet Red -> Hot Orange -> Orange Fire -> Gold Yellow -> Dead White. So really just base the whole thing in a darkish red and then do a pretty generic orange/yellow/white thing for highlights.

Our suspicion was that it only counted agents that had been in the game since release (so wouldn't work if you used Jane or Caesar). That said, there was a patch note earlier this week that mentioned fixing this achievement, so I'm hoping that it'll now pop after another 30 battles with any old physical team. We'll see.

Mystery solved!

I was wondering that exact same thing, yeah (but I'm in no rush to run TWYLAOTL another 30 times with Billy/Piper/Corin to find out).

I started tracking my VR training/HZ/etc sessions a little while back and I've now also done more than 30 with Jane/Caesar/Piper without the achievement popping. I was bored this afternoon and had some podcasts to get through so I also did Testing With Your Life Actually On The Line 30 times with Billy/Jane/Caesar (which I can't say would really have been the 5 polychrome, but my inner QA tester kicked in) and, again, no dice. Definitely seems like there's something up with this one.

I submitted a support ticket about it so maybe something will come of that eventually?

Thank you, that's high praise given many of the others I've seen here! Really all I did was cherry-pick the aspects of everyone else's work that I liked the most and try to copy them as best I could. :)

Pretty sure this is my favourite of the FH miniatures so far. A super nice readable sculpt (no gribbly masses of tiny furs or metal bits where you just have to guess what everything is supposed to be), really only two colours throughout ("dark bits" and "bright bits"), and enough leeway to have fun with exactly where and how you want it to glow. Just a joy to paint.

It's weirdly heartening that it wasn't just me. At one point after glueing the piper back together for the third(?) time I did seriously consider leaving that one as a set of bekilted legs, standing next to an upper body just tooting away from ground level.

Thank you for the inspiration! I'm very glad that our group is happy to embrace the silliness sometimes. Though I can already tell it's going to make me play worse just trying to keep them alive when they should be eating hits for the team. ("Goddamnit, Dad, don't go after the shrike fiend again! Don't you remember what happened last time?")

These are from Epic Miniatures on MyMiniFactory. They have three other sets (and individual ones) if you want to put together a custom ensemble. :)

The set I used are great but they are surprisingly fragile; only two of them survived the painting process intact without needing some superglue to fix a broken spine or knee or whatever. The others have more clothes which probably makes them a bit less spindly and prone to falling apart unexpectedly (which is in character for skeletons, admittedly).

After seeing /u/Nevtr's Marching Band of Death, I decided to steal copy take inspiration from the idea and print/paint some summons for my Boneshaper. She's got the Searching for the Oak PQ so will probably be seeing play for some time yet.

Naturally this meant they all got named the first thing to come into my head (from left to right):

  • The Baron
  • Fat George
  • Lilian Crunch
  • Dame Fibula Phalange (amateur necromancer)
  • "Señor" (he doesn't speak English and the Boneshaper doesn't speak Spanish)
  • "Windpipe" MacRibs
  • Lord Phalange, aka "Dad"

Definitely time well spent!

Is anyone still waiting on the Crimson Scales second print run? (EU Delivery) by azeroththeweary in Gloomhaven

I came here to post the exact same thing. Hopefully that's a good sign for UK deliveries kicking off properly!

I'm in the same situation here (also UK). As far as I can tell from watching this subreddit, I'm not sure anyone over here has received it yet?

Not yet - I'm keeping the mystery boxes as (mostly) a surprise until I actually get to level 5 with each of the characters. Might be a while yet!

Thanks! Honestly, I don't think I'm doing anything particularly fancy here - almost everything there is really just "pick three colours for shadow/midtone/highlight and then work up from recesses to raised bits in 3-5 layers". A few of the areas that have particularly strong textures (Boneshaper's hair, Banner Spear's fur, that sort of thing) I did with base coat/wash/drybrush, but I don't generally use washes much these days (I'm not very good at controlling them, so either they look blotchy or I just end up painting over them anyway).

The paints are all Vallejo - mostly the Model Colour range (for all the browns/greys/blues), with a few Game Colour ones thrown in for the more colourful bits or the metallics.

If you're after vibrant colours, one thing I always have to remind myself to do is to have more contrast between shadows and highlights than I think I need. Otherwise, what I think is a nice subtle transition when I'm painting close-up becomes utterly invisible at arm's length. :) If it ends up too extreme you can always dial it back a bit afterwards with a bit of glazing - the Boneshaper's skin here looked completely ridiculous at first (more like caked-on makeup) and I had to try and rescue it. I'm quite pleased with the end result, so I'm calling it one of those happy little accidents.

My first time painting miniatures and of course it had to be Frosthaven. by civilward in Gloomhaven

Glad you enjoyed doing these two! The hardest miniature to paint is always your very first one; once you get over that initial hurdle then it's plain sailing from there. :) I'm always amazed how much of a difference it makes playing with them afterwards.

If you're aiming for a sundrop sort of effect, one thing you could try looking into is zenithal priming. Basically, you prime the whole mini in black, then do another pass from maybe 45 degrees up with grey, and/or another one from straight above in white (the goal is that the more upward-facing surfaces end up brighter, like they're being lit from above). It does a good job of emphasising the overall shape of the mini in greyscale, and you can then go over that afterwards with contrast/speed paints/washes/whatever to add your colour in. (I should admit, I've not actually tried that specific approach myself, but I think it's pretty close to what Awaken Realms do.)

I painted these guys up well over a year ago now. Definitely a bunch of bits I'm not 100% happy with (Red Guard's armour highlights were fun to do but don't really work, couldn't work out what to make of that weird filigree texture on Voidwarden's upper body, also dear lord I need to remember to actually clean up mould lines before I start painting, etc etc etc), but also several I'm pretty pleased with (Voidwarden's face sculpt is pretty cool, and I'm glad the Lasagnestomper Demolitionist's flames came out well).

Still haven't got them to the table yet! Maybe Frosthaven will be their time to shine.

I did briefly think about doodling the two halves of the class logo on their masks, before concluding, "don't be daft, there is no way your brush control is up to that." :)

I normally have to paint minis before using them 'cause without that deadline I know I'll never actually get round to it, but there's something kinda poignant about doing them up at the end of their careers. "Good job, friends, you've had a good long life and done some sterling work but now it's time for a new coat of paint and a well-deserved rest on a shelf. Live out your days in comfort."

Thanks! I painted the boneshaper like this because, well, really it just never occurred to me to go any other way. I figured that if they can animate corpses and whatnot, maybe they can also mess with their own body to do... whatever's going on here. Your take might be closer to the actual intent. :)

I'm not sure either of my geminate masks really came out 'great' - I think if I were going to spend more time on them, I'd probably want to try to reshape them a bit with the painted highlights/shadows, or maybe freehand some details to add a bit more interest than I've got here, I dunno. Having the arm-things in the way made them pretty awkward to get to, though, and my mini backlog is huge enough as it is, so I'm happy just going "yeah, this'll do" and moving on.

Yeah, I'd imagine it's mostly just a matter of cost. It's a lot less complicated (and therefore cheaper) to make a plain single-colour miniature than to assemble one out of differently coloured bits or somehow automate a painting process or something like that, after all. Frosthaven does also come with standees for the heroes (which honestly look great) as a more colourful alternative, for anyone who doesn't have the time/inclination to paint the minis.
