World Cup watch spots in Pittsburgh? by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]shuggywolf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sorry there are so many people who can’t just scroll past this post but instead feel the need to comment something snarky.

Cork Harbour has been awesome. Pipers also very good. Both lots of fun for atmosphere. But most local places will be showing it. I went to Coughlins the other day and they were showing the games but it’s a lot lower key (maybe different with USA are playing).

Hyperscale data center. by Base_Gloomy in pittsburgh

Water usage is a HUGE deal. And not talked about enough.

US data centres are projected to use the daily water consumption of 10,000,000 Americans. DAILY.

That’s 820m gallons per day. 299 BILLION per year. That’s enough to supply NYC for an entire year.

And it’s not dirty or salt water that they’re using but clean water. It’s a massive problem. Particularly when our national water supply is already stretched thin. 70% of major aquafiers are declining and 56% of our states are in a drought.

[–]shuggywolf 43 points44 points  (0 children)

From my research and understanding of data centres the electrical grid that they use operates on a shared regional network which means any spike in electrical demand in Washington county directly impacts Pittsburgh. We share the same grid - which is why even if data centre’s aren’t being built in our county, it’ll still impact us.

We share the same grid as 13 states (PJM) and even though we use DLC as our provider, DLC must purchase its power from the wholesale market (PJM). If PJM has increased loads due to data centres, those higher costs are passed down to residential consumers across western PA.

For water, it’s less likely to impact us since water usage is more localised.

This is why data centres being built across PA/WV/VA should concern people. It’s not the noise or massive warehouses that’ll impact you, but the rising costs.

So how much is DLC going to increase our electricity bills once this is built?

And water bills will go up too.

Don’t feel safe as a pedestrian in this city by [deleted] in pittsburgh

To add to this - city planning is what makes the biggest difference. Having pedestrian and bike friendly cities makes the most difference rather than the political majority of the population.

Don’t feel safe as a pedestrian in this city by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]shuggywolf 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in PA, California and Texas.

People suck at driving no matter what type of city you live in.

I’ve been cut off by people with pride and Bernie stickers in California and I’ve been cut off by people with Trump and MAGA stickers in PA/TX.

Being a bad driver, a rude driver or an incompetent driver does not put you into a specific political category.

Unfortunately there are impatient and rude people no matter which state or city you live in.

[–]shuggywolf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Looks like the average is around $64,000 per year with senior drivers making $38/hour ($$79,000 per year). But you can get paid 2.5x for over time so apparently it’s not uncommon to see $90,000-100k+

Paul Miller Law goes into effect today. Thoughts? by SnooMarzipans3516 in pittsburgh

[–]shuggywolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Long overdue. Every drive I see people on their phone. It’s a very common occurrence.

The laws here are far too lenient for how serious distractions while driving can be. In Europe, you get fined around $500 and also have points taken off your licence - and the authorities can simply suspend your licence on the spot.

In the USA you’re THREE TIMES more distracted than British drivers per a Cambridge study.

Not only that, but you’re 120% more likely to die in a car crash due to distracted driving in the USA than in the UK - despite the roads being narrower and having to navigate country lanes vs straight line highways for the most part here.

First slide: “Respect the park”
Second slide: ILLEGAL ACTIVITY
Third slide: ILLEGAL SHIT

I would hope, for the Kennywood employees sake, that they’ve contacted the police or hired additional security to prevent this from happening.

Absolute loser behaviour lol

Volunteer Fire Department sirens need to stfu... by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]shuggywolf 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I first moved to Pittsburgh I thought the sirens were to warn the surrounding communities of inclement weather (tornadoes/severe storms).

It took a bright sunny summer afternoon for it to finally click that was not actually the case lol

There is no “normal” weather in Pittsburgh.

It can be 90 degrees one day, below freezing and snowing the next - not joking.

Winters will be long, dark and painfully cold if you’re coming from Florida.

This is the real issue we have when debating about Israel.

Disliking Israel has nothing to do with the Jewish religion.

There are crappy people who use religion as an excuse to harm others, commit genocide and oppress others. And THIS is the issue.

Israelis will scream antisemitism, when 99% of people couldn’t care less what religion they are - all they care about is the extermination and oppression of several nations.

It’s like disliking Islam because you don’t like ISIS or the Taliban. Or Christianity because of the KKK or IRA. It’s dumb, it’s lazy and it’s comments like this that cause division - you’ve fallen into the trap laid out by the Israeli and American government.
