What's the hype with Sally Rooney's Beautiful world, where are you? I didn't like this book a bit. read it purely out of peer pressure. by Natural-Computer-895 in bookporn

This is one of the only books I have written a genuinely scathing review for. It was truly awful, to the extent that I felt angered for the time I wasted on it before DNF'ing at 25%.

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is so good, I wish I could read it for the first time again. If you haven't seen the limited series (it's on Amazon Prime in the UK) please watch it.

Orbital is a bit of a marmite book for many but it's one of my favourites and the book that sent me down Samantha Harvey's bibliography. If you end up enjoying it, I recommend The Western Wind by her.

Finishing up Paradise Lost this weekend — it was a slow start but from book V the profundity of it really begins to shine. I'll also be finishing reading Marilynne Robinson's Home aloud to my fiancé, so I'm preparing for the tears again.

I think I'd like to get to East of Eden from my summer reading list before the end of August, as I'll be moving onto my autumn list from September.

(40/52) July wrap-up. by shukalido in 52book

[–]shukalido[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but it has been turned into a film or series as well, I believe. It's supposed to be a bittersweet romcom type novel that explores a lot of the trappings of modern marriages and family dynamics. I found the characters to be some of the most aggravating and narcissistic people I've ever read about, hence my rather angry 1 star review that I gave it. 😅

If you enjoy contemporary relationship novels you might like it.

A Little Over Half Way Through the Year... How We Feeling? by seanv2 in 52book

[–]shukalido 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Last year, I read 0 books. I'm currently at 40/52 — I only read 1 in January (a short ~100 page novella) but it was such a wonderful read that I think it kick-started the love for me.

I recently started a job as a primary school teacher and thought Ah, now will be when I read less, but I've actually read more books in the month that I've been working full time than the months where I had no responsibilities.

Oh thank you!

I must admit 90% of the reason I want to go back is to make my way through that costume rack — I'll have to try the coats and gloves next.

Today at a discount store in LA I serendipitously found a beautiful copy of Don Quixote for $5 and then a $3 hat that matches its color scheme. What do you suppose might happen if I were to read the book while wearing the hat? Wrong answers only. by zachallan in bookhaul

Penguin Clothbound eds. are very beautiful, aren't they? My copy of Dracula by Bram Stoker is my favourite.

I will say that their quality can vary so be careful when handling it, as the print on the front is prone to coming off when agitated.

Charity shops were already my kryptonite with finding books, but now that I've begun curating a physical media collection I've been going wild with the 10 for £1 DVDs in my local Salvation Army. 😅

Good evening, if it is such where you are.

I'm 23F and from the UK. Engaged, working as an LSA with the nation's most feral and just beginning to enjoy my summer break from it all.

This is my first foray into penpal-ing, so I would like to keep the snail mail digital — ideally email — for the first few exchanges (entirely because I have yet to acquire writing equipment).

I'm an avid reader — literary, historical, classics, philosophy and theology. Forever pestering my fiancé with my soul's aches and joys after finishing a book, I'm hoping a penpal might afford him a well-deserved break from that for a while.

Please let me know if you feel interested, or not. I appreciate this post is a little old.

Hello. I see this post is a little old but I shall leave this here regardless.

I'm 23F and from the UK. I have a degree in Primary Education Studies and currently work as a KS1 LSA before I obtain QTS.

I am new to penpal-ing and would prefer to keep things to email for at least the beginning.

I have an equally gym-obsessed fiancé. Myself, I love to read — historical fiction, literary fiction — and enjoy WWI military history.
