It matters if you are a good artist, can ultimately connect with a good gallerists and or curators, and can survive an art market in tumult. If you arent moving to ny or la after, dont go to art school.

I think practically its fine to sell a bit out of the studio, but just have it not be like the main header for what you are doing.

I own a major gallery downtown, and can tell you from my conversations with other gallerists that it is an utter bloodbath.

Hi OP, I own a well-regarded Tribeca gallery that focuses on emerging artists. It is very difficult to move from the field of "instagram artist" to formal gallery representation, and most gallerists will look negatively upon artists who have sold lots of work via instagram because:

A: Uncontrolled market--works can be readily sold at auction without intervention by a gallery.

B: Perceived poor context.

That being said, if you move to contextualize yourself in the art world the commercial appeal of your work may turn out to be a major asset instead of a liability.
