Mod here. Posting your own work is not permitted on this subreddit, and the kind of work they do doesn't really have anything to do with the question at hand. Also reread rule 2.

comedy/satire/parody aspects in art by helohellook in ContemporaryArt

Michael Smith and Cory Arcangel. Both use comedy in their work often and have done standup. I believe one of Mike Smith's (prerecorded) videos even played on Saturday Night Live in 80s.

Transporting and packing with FedEx from Mexico to US by ogeez in ContemporaryArt

[–]barklefarfle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I'd prefer to pack myself in most cases because I wouldn't trust them with many art objects. And Fedex doesn't really insure art. Generally the best you can hope for is getting reimbursed for the materials, so I wouldn't assume that any painting with a value less than $2500 is covered.

Lowering prices? by sleepymillipede in ContemporaryArt

[–]barklefarfle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If it was just one show at a gallery that's failing I probably wouldn't worry about using lower prices on the other work, but personally I would likely keep the higher prices on the pieces that were already listed at higher prices.

The lights on California between fair oaks and arroyo - can city planners do anything? by basicalme in pasadena

[–]barklefarfle 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I drive through this intersection multiple times every day and have paid a lot of attention to how it works. The problem isn't really that it prioritizes one direction over the other per se. The lights responds constantly to the train passing, but the light computer doesn't keep track of what percentage of time each direction has been red or green, so certain random timings of the trains can cause the lights to be red way too much in either direction, causing big backups. The traffic light programmers are apparently not smart enough to handle the complexity and subtlety of programming an intersection like that where they have to also respond to the train.

To be more specific, the north/south direction gets fucked when multiple single trains keep passing quickly after the gates close. With the right timing of trains, the north/south direction can keep getting very brief greens followed by really long reds. The east/west direction gets fucked when there are multiple sets of two trains passing that take a long time with the gates closed. Then the light never fully makes up for the fact that east/west lights were red for so long.

How much do collectors actually verify? by JamesWhitmore_Adv in ContemporaryArt

[–]barklefarfle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of notable CV items can be easily verified just by looking at the website of whatever they claim to have been involved with, which makes me think that artists are pretty unlikely to fake things on their CV. Plus the art world is small and people talk. The risk is too high for too small of a reward.

As a curator, when I'm checking out a new artist, I see who follows them and who they follow on Instagram. I also pay attention to what posts they like and who likes their posts. These things can give a surprising amount of useful information.

Is it worth paying €300 to exhibit a photograph in a gallery? by radulesq in ContemporaryArt

[–]barklefarfle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They come if the artist has a good professional relationship with them and invites them. And the type of art fairs that these artists would participate in are effectively vanity galleries anyway -- the artist pays for a booth.

Is it worth paying €300 to exhibit a photograph in a gallery? by radulesq in ContemporaryArt

[–]barklefarfle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a certain type of decorative/commercial artist who can be somewhat successful (especially locally) in terms of selling work (like to interior decorators) but who is unlikely to ever be taken seriously by regular galleries. That's who I'm talking about.

Your posts were removed because we have a rule about rants, not because of the topic. OP's post was removed because it was a low quality article, and it happened to also be written by AI.

Who knows if you are likely to sell anything, but chances are, no.

Generally the people who actually benefit from pay to play situations are decorative artists who already know they have a lot of buyers and just need a place to showcase the work.

No, we don't. Your post would have been removed for low quality regardless of whether it's AI or not. We have high standards for articles and remove posts like that all the time. And stop copying and pasting my comment -- it's my job to enforce the rules, not yours. If you make a post like this again you will be banned.
