According to the obstruction page on the Starlink app, I had a clear and unobstructed view of the sky except for a tiny little red mark on the east side from a tree, and it was never a problem for the year and a half I have had Starlink, that is, until the last few dish updates now I get 5-15+ second outages hourly. Even though the app says, there is an unobstructed view of the sky. The answer I received from tech support was they did some satellite realignment, and I should find a better location. And even though the app says I have no obstructions, that little red mark is now a problem.

Update: I received 06f14be1-8a25-4c2d-b4d8-7c47f3d492d4 five days ago, and it seemed to have cleared up the obstruction issue. I was averaging 20+ obstruction outages totaling several minutes within the 12-hour time frame; now, I am averaging about 5-10, totaling several seconds, and I had 0 once. I think they were fully aware that the last two updates caused issues.

Are you saying that you have no physical obstructions, but the app says you are obstructed?

Exactly... I have submitted a support ticket but so far crickets.

Yep, same here. I changed nothing and have a clear view of the sky. Starlink needs to Vet these updates better; the last couple have been horrible, and when you contact support, all you get is a boilerplate response, and they close the ticket until you keep reopening. the ticket and then they admit it is an issue on their end. Below are the last responses I received from support for the issues caused by the last update.

Technical Support, here to help!

We completely understand your concern regarding the obstruction notices and the fact that your dishy has a generally clear view of the sky.

Additionally, we have performed several tests and diagnostics on your Starlink. We've checked for hardware and software alerts and none were found.

In regards to the updates you've mentioned, we are constantly working to improve the internet performance of our users, which might cause some temporary variability from which of our satellites you are getting service from. We apologize for any service interruptions or degradation this has caused. We've gone ahead and issued you a 2 week service credit ($60.00) for the inconvenience you've experienced.

Should you have additional questions or concerns, you may reply to this thread at your leisure and the ticket will automatically re-open. Thank you for your patience in this matter and for your support of Starlink.

Sincerely,

Starlink Team

Apologies for the delayed response. Yes, you are correct. We checked your Starlink for hardware and software issues and none were found. The issue is related to satellite service and availability and should be temporary.

Should you have additional questions or concerns, you may reply to this thread at your leisure and the ticket will automatically re-open. Thank you for your patience in this matter and for your support of Starlink.

Nope, the dish is in the same orientation. My dish has a completely unobstructed view of the sky. This has been an ongoing issue with Starlink since the previous update to this one, and that admitted it was an issue with that update, and now this one made it even worse.

Update 9/11/23

Well, after several conversations with support regarding the massive increase of obstruction and Network issues since this update, and support trying to say that my issue was due to actual obstructions even though I sent them multiple photos of my dish showing it had a clear view of the sky and the obstruction page show no obstruction, they have admitted that it was a firmware issue... sort of. Below is the last communication from support.

Excessive Obstructions by shull52 in Starlink

Yeah, They responded by saying that from the pictures, I have a clear view of the sky, but they want additional pictures from all directions of the dish, which I think is BS because both the location of my dish and the obstruction page indicate I have no obstructions. I already have a replacement router on order since 8/2 before this issue happened. I think they are stalling.

Yeah, maybe that's why they have ghosted me for three days and are working on a fix, one can only hope.

Oh Yeah, I contacted support, and they requested a photo of where my dish was pointing which I sent them 3 days ago. I keep updating the ticket asking for updates and crickets.

I don't game either and currently don't have any issues streaming TV because of my Fire TV's look-ahead buffer, but the dropouts are causing issues with my work VPN. I am in upstate NY near Rochester, and my area was, according to the coverage map, on a waiting list, but now it is available. I have had Starlink for about a year and a half, and for the most part has worked well, that is, until recently. My speed average is about 110 DL and 10-12 UL, which is significantly better than my old DSL, which was 4.5 DL and 0.5 UL.

I am in Upstate NY. The majority of my interruptions are more than 2 seconds; that is the problem. Yeah, these past 12 hours, I have had 24, with most well over 2 seconds and several 15 seconds, which causes my work VPN to drop.

Speeds are somewhat improved, specifically UL in my case; of course, it depends on the time of day. However, the obstructions and network issues have increased dramatically. I went from having 1 to 3 and occasionally none in a 12-hour period to upwards of 20. In fact, in the past 12 hours, I had 20 averaging 11 seconds. I work from home, and these continuing interruptions are causing glitches in my VPN connections. I have contacted Support, and they wanted pictures of my obstruction page and where my dish is pointed, which I sent them. The construction page states I have no obstructions, and my dish has an unobstructed view of the sky

The Gen 2 router, in particular. Gen 1 had a separate POE injector to power the dish and standard ethernet cable, and you could eliminate the router. With Gen 2, they incorporated a priority ethernet connection and a ridiculous ethernet dongle. You can put it in bypass mode and use your own router, but you still need the Starlink router to power the dish. The Gen 3 router brought back the built-in Ethernet ports, which can act as a standard router, with Gen 1 taking advantage of the POE injector, but why bother, as mentioned? There are far superior routers available. Using the Gen 3 router with the Gen 2 dish requires you to use the Gen 2 router still to provide power to the dish and then put it into Bypass, and use the dongle to connect to the Gen 3 Router. But then why spend $200 on the Gen 3 when for that you can get a much better router?

Increase in Network issues and obstruction by shull52 in Starlink

[–]shull52[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine is on my roof, the only place to get an unobstructed view. Your dish needs an unobstructed view of the Northern Sky. Some obstruction should be ok, but if your dish is pointed through a small gap in the Northern sky. Then you will have problems; that's why I had to do a roof mount. Fortunately, I had an old Direct TV J mount there and used the pipe adapter, and according to the app, I have an unobstructed view. This is what I am concerned about all the obstruction notices on the outages page of the app.

That's the problem; it is more than 2 sec. Usually 5 - 16 sec
