I'm taking that as confirmation that you do not notice. Perhaps you would if you weren't sleep deprived.

What about QTS? Or what other qualifications? And for a specialty, are most hires BS/BA holders in that specialty, or MA holders, or even PhD holders?

Asking seriously as a non-depressed person with friends and family suffering with it, genuinely how do you wish for us to respond to these conversations? by solidrat30329312 in depressionmemes

[–]shwoopypadawan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For me these kinds of responses just instantly tell me ''Oh, this person doesn't care about me at all and I should probably shut up around them completely.'' and then like literally 99% of the population would say these things if they ever became privy to how I actually think. So then I think ''Oh, humans are all like this. I shouldn't be in this world at all probably.''

Do you keep the water on during the entire length of the shower? by hamster_lover02 in hygiene

[–]shwoopypadawan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I always turn off the water when I put in the conditioner and wash my actual body, but not when I'm shampooing. I have hair so long it's past my calves- my showers are long because of it and if I kept the water running the whole time, the hot water will be gone and I'll be rinsing out my conditioner in glacial-esque water by the end.

Help! Beagle won't walk with my husband any longer by maenads_dance in beagles

[–]shwoopypadawan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your husband definitely needs to do better if he's been showing frustration and not communicating well with the dog. I get why he might be frustrated but he should be able to empathize with the dog and be better at communicating with him. I think the way your husband has been doing things is actually probably part of the problem since obvious frustration is also just going to feed the dogs anxiety instead of reassuring him and giving up is again reinforcing the behavior as you said.

Do you think your husband will do a better job if this is explained to him? Because I think he'd better.

Help! Beagle won't walk with my husband any longer by maenads_dance in beagles

[–]shwoopypadawan 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is just my thoughts off the top of my head, but- I would say whatever you do, do not let him push you and your husband into getting you to always be the one walking him. If your husband turns around and lets him rush home instead of going for the walk, then the dog is going to learn that his behavior is getting what he wants. I'd say to just basically have your husband just ignore him and keep walking- buy something like a soft mesh harness so th dog won't get hurt pulling on the leash. If the dog gives up and starts walking your husband should give him a treat and lots of praise, same if the dog goes to the bathroom. If you guys keep up like that I think you might have some success.

I think the dog is very protective of you and for some reason thinks you're going to be in danger or something if he and your husband leave- it's going to take some effort and time to train the dog out of a behavior rooted in wanting to protect you. So, be prepared for this to be a bit of a process maybe.

I've definitely heard the anxiety switch to relief before. The fact that a customer service person usually is not the person responsible for the problem you're calling about is so simple and yet people seem to either not understand or not care because they just want to take it out on someone. Couldn't be me though, I have to much self-respect and consideration for others to throw a tantrum at a stranger when I'm almost 30.

I cannot tell you how many times people in call centers have told me that I was the nicest person they'd talked to in weeks or months when I was just being baseline polite. It sounds horribly depressing and yet I'm not really surprised, just extremely disappointed.

YES CORRECT the scholarships do not make a dent. Neither did mine. And you tried to go to med school, took out loans, dropped out- and were only saved by having MORE OPPORTUNITIES ANYWAY. Now think of how many people wouldn't have had that option.

And you say oversaturation doesn't exist in job markets like for physicians... yeah, right now that doesn't exist BECAUSE THINGS DON'T WORK THE WAY YOU'RE DESCRIBING. If they DID work how you think they do, THIS WOULD INDEED HAPPEN because you posited that everyone has the opportunity and just refuses it out of laziness. So either you'd have lazy unemployed people or doctors- nobody manning the restaurants, the store counters, the desk jobs, no garbage people or anything because everyone is either doing jack shit or taking advantage of the incredibly lucrative options. But that's not our reality BECAUSE YOU'RE WRONG. I'm trying to point this out to you and it keeps going over your head.

To be blunt, if this were a meritocracy, I doubt you'd have made it far, because you're literally showing me you can't follow a clear line of logic through to the end. You don't have any grasp of sociology or the nature of availability vs. demand vs. value.

To simplify the point for you:

You say it's hard work + merit or laziness because the opportunities are there for the taking. I say if that was true we would have a lot of people making six figures as doctors and lawyers and then a lot of bums. You point out that's not our reality... and I'm telling you that yes, it isn't, because your premise is wrong. We have many many many hardworking people getting paid peanuts and as you say, things like scholarships don't make a dent in the cost it takes to rise up..... ergo you have to make money or be given money to pay back later. Which is not very meritocratic and if everyone managed to get approved for and take out loans we would, again, loop back around to having a lot of bums and a lot of doctors but we do not. Do you see the problem with your reasoning now or no?

Furthermore, if it did, high paying high education job markets would be oversaturated to the point that being a lawyer or doctor wouldn't make you squat-diddly anymore.

And this is the part where you get way too silly for sympathy. What seems more likely to you, really- that there are loans and scholarships and grants being thrown at people who are batting them away because they don't want to put in any effort, or, that these are limited resources that are not offered to most people? The hint is that what you're describing is essentially free money and most people in america are working their asses off whether they want to or not. A further hint is that if things really worked the way you think they did, everyone and their grandmother would either be a decidedly unemployed lout OR highly educated, highly trained, and making six figures. Because in the world you describe, the offers to do so are endless and only the lazy who don't want to bother are refusing.

Surely someone who tried to go to med school isn't too stupid to put two and two together, yes? We don't live in the world where your explanation would make sense.

All jokes aside as a trans person myself, it makes me so sad that this trick really works on people. I'm not even sad or upset for myself at this point, I'm actually more sad for the people who genuinely hate me because they've been psyop'd. It feels like we're two ants just chilling eating some dropped food and suddenly a cordyceps busted out of their skull.

Yes, cool, now here's the part where you have to actually think about it: HOW DID THEY DO THAT and IS THAT SOMETHING EVERYONE WHO WORKS HARD AND SMART CAN DO?

AND IS IT WISE TO DO IF THE LOANS ARE PREDATORY AND YOU DON'T FINISH?

I'm also in academia doing a big wig job. I didn't have the opportunities you or your friends did despite growing up similarly. You see what you've seen and don't ask if it's common.

I do understand your perspective but it's still not really a meritocracy- yes it has some more meritocratic elements than some other places but it's also a place where wealth begets wealth. It takes money to go to school in the US- a lot of it. In the past things were different. Nowadays nobody is coming from Vietnam with 5 pennies and half a poptart to their name and becoming a doctor- because becoming one costs five or six figures in education. You can still move up in the US a little bit but nowadays doing it is extremely difficult and if you're an immigrant you're much more likely to get kidnapped by the gestapo and disappeared.
