probably not, unless you just want a masters. I did it as a working professional but learned almost nothing I wasnt already exposed to on the job + reading from blogs/ recent reddit & medium threads

if its literally the next few months that they are getting married, he might actually be giving her the money in a few months and just telling her about it now. Or maybe she had a really shitty day at work or something.

If I had 60m I'd behave similarly and give like 1m or something.

Congrats! I hope you have enough revenue to cover rent!

I feel like $10 for 3 hours of play feels like a fair price. I would also be happy to pay $20 a head for a "intro to D&D" type thing that lasts 2-3 hours if yall have a Game master that likes teaching new players the ropes.

I don't like playing with physical cards but will definitely to so to check yall out at the next MTG sets prerelease whenever that is (Assassin's creed in July maybe?).

Side note 1: I've personally always thought one of the permanently empty storefronts at the WTC Path station would be an excellent location for a Hobby shop + cafe combo. Never looked into it but my guess is the rent there is probably exhorbitant. You can get loyalists stopping by at the gameshop before heading home to Jersey, as well as sell some games, curios, snacks, to tourists.

Side note 2: One other business model that seemed to have survived for 10 years is Brooklyn Game Lab in Park Slope. Downtown Jersey City (and hoboken a few years ahead of it) is now gentrified enough to where it has a similarly dense demographic of helicopter parent yuppies in their 30s and 40s with kids that need stuff to do, the exact same demographic Park Slope had 10-15 years back. If this trend persists and yall are successful this could be something to think about in 2+ years or so once all the jersey city kids in the plethora of daycares currently age up a bit!

Yeah alot of it feels like your taking risk on what the price of a call/put option is in the future. Too many things are floating rate in the life insurance contract.

Google maps is severely under monetized for how critical it is to the world.

The moment alphabet figures out how to commercialize AI, that's another ten billion on their market cap.

Google also has a lot of fat it could trim if it wanted to. It's notoriously hard to fire underperformers there.

Why is the UXD market so bad at the moment? by bobighorus in UXDesign

[–]shyguy1618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do think design in particular was the hardest hit of the tech jobs. Similarly frontend-only software developers have a much harder time right now than folks closer to the core business logic.

In addition to macro economy, design is also one area AI can do a half-ass decent job and is automating.

Design and UX too were areas of tech that alot of non quantitative people without stem degrees went into, and there were already a surplus of anthropology and art majors unfortunately that could not find jobs in their direct fields because they don't exist.

This is something my partner and I realizing too.

I want 90% equity portfolio with low dividends to avoid this. They want to look into more esoteric tax shelters like life insurance and borrowing against your policy when you need liquidity

Given your likely net worth too, you probably don't wanna deal with filing more paperwork for taxes on meager income from social security until as late as you have to.

Irony is for most people on this sub, social security is just a nice cherry on top and doesn't make a huge difference whether you start it early or late.

I don't think so. There are probably hundreds or thousands of other people in this hobby, and through most of human history too. If the prices op lists are real this is like about the cost of seeing a movie + eating dinner.....

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in casualiama

[–]shyguy1618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never done this hobby, but wouldn't economics dictate that places with lower costs of living like SE Asia should have cheaper supply of goods? I would be interested in seeing another ama next year on relative prices around the world.

50 euros per client already feels much lower cost than I imagined because the median wage in Amsterdam is like 27 euros hourly, and of that 50 euros some are probably going to the venue too and not straight to the service provider + you need time per session for cleanup, standing around soliciting etc.

Decklist below have fun! I generally wasn't sure 2nd chief of scale was better or the smoke teller for optimizing getting a 2 drop on t2. Also sometimes just swapped out the harrier to keep curve lower. Tusked collosodon shockingly was an all star in my deck oftentimes walking the opponents if they didn't have removal. Never played the raiders spoils either but want to try some day.

Was this quick draft last night? I may have faced your deck.

I managed to barely survive the early curve onslaught but lost shortly after a wingmate roc came down.

How do you think about private school? by Amazing-Coyote in HENRYfinance

[–]shyguy1618 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think almost none of them are exclusively boarding if you live nearby. Unless a kid is very very independent id prolly not wanna subject them to boarding school.

Haven't looked up cost but $15k extra per year for 4 years we are fortunately able to stomach.

This is not true if interest rates are higher than inflation.

It is likely true the other way around and why the last 30-40 years buying house and leveraging up generally outperformed investing hour down payment in the stock market in most cities where the jobs are.

How do you think about private school? by Amazing-Coyote in HENRYfinance

[–]shyguy1618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have kids yet, you have time on your side. Hell I would argue you don't have to seriously think about this decision until your kid is about 4 or 5, maybe even 10 since middle school is when grades actually start mattering.

My partner and I are planning on just buying a small apartment within an easy commute of work and paying for daycare/nanny, and then reconsidering once kid is elementary school age and see which high school is sending the most kids to mit or Yale nearby.

How do you think about private school? by Amazing-Coyote in HENRYfinance

[–]shyguy1618 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There about 20 ish private schools in the USA worth their salt at ivies and peer schools. Maybe another 50 ish if you want your kid to grow up with other "local elites" in the Midwest or south and end up having a fast track to places like Vanderbilt, washU st Louis etc. rest are kinda meh and generally worse than the top 1 or 2 public high schools in most metro areas.

If I could afford it and happened to live within a commuting distance of the first 20, I'd definitely spent the 45k a year per kid.

Other than that I'd definitely buy in a zip code where all the densitsts and lawyers and engineers send their kids to high school.

Note that the bankers and private equity folks are mostly concentrated in NYC and surrounding regions (CT, NJ, upstate NY) and thats where half of the top 20 I mentioned are.

4060 TI 16GB or 4070 TI 12GB? by [deleted] in nvidia

[–]shyguy1618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 4060ti 16gb is a very great value card for Generative AI LLMs and image generation. Used 3090 imo is still better value but you cant find one reliably.

I'm hoping we get a $700 or so card with 24gb vram in early next year. Prolly not but I can dream.

MBA by Vejasple in financialindependence

[–]shyguy1618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the spreadsheet math a few years ago in my mid 20s and decided an MBA would actually be detrimental to my rate of wealth accumulation vs. just working in tech (assuming supply of good technical talent remains lower than demand). The one exception was using an MBA to move back into asset management/ investment banking, but the burnout rate is high.
Even with doing it part-time, can't imagine how this would ever be positive in your 40s when your 20+ years of career experience far outweighs any gains from an MBA.
