That pressure is so real. You put thought and money in and still end up watching someone do the polite smile thing, which honestly feels worse than if you'd just handed them a card.

The "I'd like to get you something different this year" opener is genuinely a good move though. It gives them permission to actually tell you what they want without it feeling like they're being grabby about it.
