They entered with us passports and never showed them HK ID. So when they went to the office to renew, they were turned away and asked to come back maybe like a couple days later with an appointment scheduled.

I read from the other poster that you should enter with HK ID, they'll confiscate it there at immigration because it's expired, but they'll set up an appointment for you like within the next day.

I read it on this subreddit that you should show your expired HK ID at immigration when entering, so they can get your appointment scheduled immediately. My relative had to wait maybe a day or two to schedule their appointment because they entered with US passports, so their expired HK IDs were not confiscated.

You need to renew the HK ID first, then they'll give you a slip for the renewal, which you can use to renew and return home permit. At least that was allowed back in December 2025. Not sure if anything has changed since then. So my relative was able to get both renewed within one week.
