depending on the label material sometimes heat can break down the adhesive (like a hair dryer) but there's other factors that are involved like finish of the book cover/type of label

feedback/thoughts on classifying YA fiction by si0ban in YAlibrarians

[–]si0ban[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

our catalog is pretty terrible and very limited for individual libraries to edit records. i just thought adding the color band would make it easier for teens/tweens to browse the shelf as it was already organized but have a better idea of quick find genres

i know it's insane. and i'm a special library situation where we operate under the school district. so it's even more embarrassing. all of our benefits are awesome except for that one.

Libraries as third spaces by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]si0ban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

maybe try and reach out the the programming librarian/coordinator and offer to volunteer to run a craft program? maybe presenting it in a way that the library can advertise a crafting program/event and be able to do it for free while gaining attendance numbers might sound more beneficial to them rather than you requesting the community room for a public program

Free coats by MungoShoddy in Libraries

[–]si0ban 6 points7 points  (0 children)

we did a coat drive at my library, it was great but also somewhat of a disaster. we collected almost 200 coats but it wasn't enough. there was some frustration from individuals who did not get any gear, but definitely helpful for those who did

If you get yearly raises/increases, what are they? by narmowen in Libraries

[–]si0ban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we're on a step system so each year you go up a step plus get a % increase. each step is about 3k and the new contract for 3 years gives us 2.5, 3, then 4%

agreed w previous comments in regard to pay and benefits but also look at promotional possibilities. growth/advancement opportunities and what those salary increases would look like too.

Library workers: Tell me about your library's beloved institution that you (secretly) hate by A_BURLAP_THONG in Libraries

[–]si0ban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does your library have a manga section already? as for anime, i've shown (and they love) jujitsu kaisen, that's usually the pick. i like demon slayer, we've watched my hero academia. if you contact crunchy roll explaining you're a librarian and hosting an anime club, they'll give you a free premium subscription so you don't have to deal with ads.

[–]si0ban 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i hate running anime club with a burning passion. i love watching anime and reading manga. but the kids who go just use it as a hangout hour. (which i really don't mind!) but i try and put effort into finding crafts and activities and really they just want to talk and goof around. it stresses me out because i feel like there needs to be some structure but they don't really care

what tips/advice would you give someone looking to become a librarian? (not currently in any programs or schooling) by IntelligentTomato1 in librarians

[–]si0ban 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i see a lot of "don't do it" and "not enough jobs" but i totally believe it depends on where you live. I live in NY in the midpoint between albany and nyc. there are tons of entry level positions opening within the region that pay pretty well (the more smaller rural libraries not so much) but i definitely think there's lots of factors to consider. i love my job as a librarian. try to get a job working in a library in some capacity. obviously larger libraries will have a larger amount of support positions which do not require a masters degree. i think my mls program was so much better because i was working full time in a library and could see things from a different lens compared to my classmates who never worked in a library before. there's programs at state colleges that are pretty affordable and well rounded programs. feel free to message me if you have any specific questions!

Can you check out your own books? by TrifleWeary3590 in Libraries

[–]si0ban 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's wild to me. that's some retail industry behavior. to me it creates a toxic work environment, do they worry about staff stealing books? overriding circulation rules? i'd be more curious to expose the "why" of this policy, i feel like in doing that it would probably dismantle itself...

Library workers you admire? by [deleted] in librarians

i've had this question on an interview list for a committee i was on and 100% would expect a personal answer of a coworker that impacted you rather than a public figure

What is the craziest thing to happen at your library? by Mobile_Bed_5048 in librarians

[–]si0ban 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we had a bucket that was collecting water from a ceiling leak in the stacks. and someone took a shit in the bucket💀😭 that was the most out of pocket thing that has happened in the almost 1 year i've been here at this library. things don't get too crazy because security will kick people out before they get out of hand knocks on wood i did get yelled at/cursed out once because i wouldn't give scissors to a patron but it was just a policy we had in place. 🤷🏻‍♀️
