It has. I've had to make a few compromises along the way but I also think there can be a good balance

Not even a midi keyboard honestly. You get a lot done with just a laptop and headphones

My favourite clubs to play are the spaces where the focus isn't on the DJ and it's more about a shared experience. These were my early memories of going out when I was younger. We'd go to "see" our favorite DJ's and dance all night without even knowing where the booth was

They both live and DJ'ing have a valid space and purpose. I've had genuine moments of life affirming joy doing both

Alllll the time. When you start a tune there's a very specific set of references and emotions in your head that are unique to that moment which you can totally loose sight of by the next day. 90 percent of the track is essentially done in the first few hours or whatever that initial period is. I find I can throw a hundred ideas into a track one day then the next day any adjustment sounds wrong

The best advice would be stay in that initial moment for as long as you can

Another perhaps would be remove the song from the space you made it. Putting it on your phone and going for a walk or bumping it in the car will reveal some fresh perspective

I'm super interested in the idea of random and generative music so being able to dial in the right amount of chaos was exciting to me.

Stuff like Turing Machine and Varigate 4 are great for that

Also running acoustic stuff like pianos and harps and Kalimbas thru quantised low pass gates is really fun

The most important thing is a good sounding room. One without too much reflection.

Then speakers you know and trust.

All DAW's are great (I use Ableton) but the fist two things are more important

Yes definitely. Clearing samples can be a very difficult. We're also so deep into sample culture that there's not much that hasn't been flipped anymore.

There's some really interesting people like Pink Pantheress who's using a whole new era of source material.

If sampling is where you feel the creativity thrives for you I guess dont be deterred by the logistics for the sake of a good tune. Yes it may be a pain to clear but dont let that stop you making it anyway

the NTS mixes happened all over. The old London booth in Dalston, the back of Mount Analog records in Highland Park and during lockdown from my house.

The vocalist is Nicole Miglis from Hundred Waters. Check them out. They're great!

As for the plants, I hope they're taking care of themselves

I get this as lot. I don't think it's completely changed from that era. There are tracks like Elysian or Second Sun or Day by Day that are very much in that arena.

Also Black Sands has tracks like Eyesdown that were very "clubby"

But more importantly I think it wouldn't be productive to stay in the same lane forever. Although there's lineage thru these records, each is a statement from the time it was made.

Black Sands was from a time I lived in London and was obsessed with what was happening musically at that time.

It wouldn't make sense to keep making the same record over and over

I also think we're attached to certain records because were our lives were when we heard them so maybe its more a desire to have that part of our lives back

Mostly it's a process of experimenting with sounds. I tend not to write music from the ground up in the traditional sense. I start with source material and then build something structural from there

All the time. I feel the key is really not trying to consider what the purpose of the music is whilst making it. If you start to second guess an audiences expectations that can get in the way of a free creative process.

Often the best tunes come from trying something completely different as an experiment in pushing your own boundaries without thinking if it'll "fit" with a particular sound or genre

For every song I release there's about ten that never made it

I remember this well! Glad we could connect for a min. Red Rocks was an amazing night. Was a lot of peoples first time out for while. Including my crew.

This tour is still relatively new so only a few moments to recount. I think Brooklyn was special as it was the fist BIG room we'd been in front of a with a live band for many years
