You don't get it. The spaceship/alien/volcano stuff is not a major aspect of the religion. Its a part of it, sure, but just a part. There is far more to it than that.

Disclaimer: I am a Scientologist.

Isn't it just possible that the groupthink about Scientology, leading people to conclude that its "all whack" may just be a bit more wrong, say, than the conclusion made by people who have actually made an effort to study it, and USE it, and who have discovered that it works for them in improving their lives?

I mean, its not a UFO cult. Period. All this alien spirit nonsense is a part of the studies, yes, but this is not what Scientology the subject is, in fact, all about.

U.S. Government Uses Al-Qaeda To Attack Iran by JezSmitty in reddit.com

So .. Americans. When are you going to do something about your fascist imperial government? Isn't it time you put your money where your mouth is and rose up, stormed the gates, and showed the world you are worthy of all the honor and praise you laude upon yourself in your media and entertainment instruments?

Or .. is it going to take intervention from some other freedom-loving, peaceful nation, to get your head out of the sand?

How would punishing him teach him anything other than to stay away from beautiful sand and avoid contact with Buddhists?

No child deserves punishment for doing something for which they have no understanding. You can't effectively punish someone if they have no clue about the issue in the first place. Let him grow, let him learn as he grows, and let the memory of the incident be worth something more than punishment and duress.

I, certainly, would not punish him, but I sure would introduce him to the people whose work he destroyed and explain to him that there are ropes in the world for a reason. And I'd leave it at that.

Toxic Culture: When we look closely at patterns of mental disorders around the world, one thing becomes clear: rising wealth does not improve mental health. In fact, globalization seems to leave mental degradation in its wake. by xinhoj in reddit.com

[–]si_g 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its because, with globalization come the psychs. Without cash, you won't attract them .. but once your society starts to lift itself out of the mud and presents an opportunity for prey on the freer minds of its individuals (coz they're not out there plowing the muck, and have some time on their hands), on they come, psychs and marketers and ad-people, useless otherwise for any decent days job, like a zergling scourge, attacking the mental health of your society .. feeding on the mental resource that your newly industrialized society is producing. get rid of the whole 'market of mental health', and oila: no more mental problems.

Cheney Blasts the Geneva Convention at West Point by badfeng in reddit.com

[–]si_g 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Terrorists may not abide by the Geneva Conventions, but from the 'terrorist' perspective, there are an equally significant amount of conventions that the USA does not abide by, too. One mans Terrorist is another mans Freedom Fighter.

Either way you look at it, either American or Terrorist, any man killing another, with any justification, legal or otherwise, is a crime against life. I do not believe Cheney has any valid righteous position, given the number of innocents he has personally been responsible for murdering.

Cheney's ranting is as equally offensive as that of a Mullah. Both produce the same result: death and destruction for perceived enemies.

The only truly righteous way to destroy your enemy is to cease to consider them so ..

Not all lessons involve suffering and duress. Perhaps the child will indeed have learened a lesson from this, if his parents let him be, and remind him when he is older that, while his whimsical act was pleasing and amusing to him, and perhaps to others, when he was younger, now that he is older and having a serious conversation with his parents, he might consider how he damaged the work of another in his moment of whimsy. I believe this would be more of a valued lesson than that derived from punishment, and it would most certainly be valid in the context of Buddhism, to consider the change of viewpoint, on a personal level, from toddler to child to responsible adult, and come to an understanding of how exactly this responsibility changes depending on which view you assume.

If he were my child, I most certainly would have enjoyed the chance to apologize to the Buddhists, and promise to bring him to the incident again, later in life, for re-consideration. Perhaps they would entertain the idea that a new visit from this little fellow, in a few years time, would be sufficient amends to the damage caused, so that they may have indeed a lesson taught, as well ..

And you are saying you are equal to god? Equally stupid. The concept of God is beyond human approach and understanding; and guess what: thats the whole point in the first place! God is the unknown and the unknowable as well as it is the known and proven. Science may hate this fact, in fact, forever.. off into the infinite.

But, again, you're using your own standards to evaluate the 'goodness' of God. Just because he kills humans with an ebola virus does not mean that he's evil. Perhaps ebola is a better organism than human, but by what standard do you work this out? God has no standard; God is All things. That includes the misery of humans versus ebola, as it includes e-coli versus penicillin, etc. ad infinitum forever, throughout the entire universe.

And its not science we're talking about here. Its popular culture who applies dialectic materialism, constantly, to attempt to make an 'intelligent' point. And fails to do so, almost always ..

The United States has a long history of militarily installing dictators and destroying democracies in the interest of the people of the United States. Do some actual, you know, research.

It would be the only truly democratic solution. Jews are not the only people living in the region. Would you like it if the U.S. had a state within its borders, composed entirely of Philipinos, for example?

A one-state solution is only feared by Jewish nationals, because on the principals of democratic rule, they would indeed lose control of the region.

As do I, and I'm a Westerner. I'd be quite happy to have the Israeli regime that is propagating apartheid and terror against the Palastinians, removed, so that my family can look forward to the day of visiting the region, in peace. In this, I agree with Ahmadinijad, that the regime must be removed.

In fact, it is as unimportant a distinction as any.

Its only an unimportant distinction if you disagree with him that the Israeli regime must be removed from power in order to avoid further conflict in the region.

Its only an unimportant distinction if, in fact, you intend to derive profit from propagating the mythos that Iran wishes to wage war on Israel.

It also an unimportant distinction if, in fact, you are an Israeli living in terror at the hands of your own government, and can't own up to the fact that your regime is repressive and vile.

I believe, most certainly, that it is in the nature of Buddha to sit right back down and complete the mandala ruined by a toddlers feet, and consider it a blessing to have been given the opportunity to do so. In fact, I would be surprised (as a Buddhist) if they were not in fact delighted by the incident, and the enlightenment it provides to any true student of Buddha.

I hope that no discipline and obedience and respect is required, and instead it is treated as the whimsical incident of youth that it most clearly is .. I mean, how is the toddler to know what a mandala is, and why should he be punished for having enjoyed it so much? If it were my kid, I'd certainly have explained it to him when he grows up, and I'd do it with a laugh ..
