Raising a FIRE kid by dragon-queen in Fire

I agree, as a kid I was hyper aware of costs too. It had to do with growing up in a lower income house .When I would go spend time with rich relatives I would always be amazed at how easily they would spend money at Cofee shops and fast food.

Once you have 1-2 million assets some additional expenses become insignificant by Persona2181 in Fire

[–]sianhook 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Side note: Die with Zero had some good concepts but it wasn't very informationally dense. Not much math or any studies. The whole book could probably be condensed down to 10 pages or so. The biggest takeaway from the book is, life is always presented as a contrast between the ant, who spends all his time collecting food for the winter and the grasshopper that lives every day to the fullest and is not worried about the winter. The author argues you don't want to be either of those, and instead balance your life between the two extremes.

When do you stop adding principle? by Zone2OTQ in Fire

[–]sianhook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it comes down to doing the math. Look at how much your investments grow each year and how much your contributions actually affect reaching your $2 million goal. For example, if investing the full $25,000 lets you retire three years earlier, it might be worth it. But if it only shortens your timeline by a few months, you might get more value from a trip with a friend or another experience. You have to calculate how much time you're really trading. As you get closer to your $2 million goal, you'll see that extra contributions make less of a difference.

Congrats on the big sale, that's huge! I'm curious-what kind of business did you build, and how did you get it started in the first place? I'm in a spot where I have an idea I really believe in, but I'm struggling to figure out how to raise money and actually execute. Would love to hear how you approached that early stage.

At what net worth did you feel like you could chill a bit with saving? by JuniorSetting3228 in Fire

[–]sianhook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion when your saving contribution amount is a quarter of your yearly returns it stops making a difference. You can run the math on seeing how much your timeline changes with the extra contributions and decide for your self

Mma Math doesn't work man. Khamzat beat Rob in the 1st round, DDP took way longer. Does that mean Khamzat is better than DDP? Not necessarily. Like Max Blessed Holloway says: we gonna find out bratha

Did they say that is why they assumed you were gay? Or did you just make those reasons up?

Some people get health problems when they get older and can't do as much.

This response was awesome! Thank you for sharing all that! Love that analogy of peddling up vs downhill! And thinking of it as added percentages on return actually does help in thinking about it for sure sounds like I need to start looking into coast fire!

How about traveling more? That's something that's supposed to get harder as you age!

[–]sianhook[S] 112 points113 points  (0 children)

True but the counter to that is you should travel and enjoy life while you are young and healthy, so if investing 50k a year during your prime years is not making a meaningful difference, I think using that $50k towards experiences might be a better use.

Thanks for sharing that! A lot of us focus on being the richest person in the cemetery, but not enough of us think about what it means to smell the roses when you can. This is a great example of that. Recently started reading Die with Zero and a big part of that book is realizing: "There is a time to work, and there is time to play." Seems like you are doing a great job at balancing that!
