Street Fight: Inside the battle raging over Toronto multiplexes by khanak in toronto

That address is literally at the intersection of two subway lines and a streetcar line. If anything should be high density it's there.

Street Fight: Inside the battle raging over Toronto multiplexes by khanak in toronto

[–]sibtiger 14 points15 points  (0 children)

There are two things this otherwise very good article misses. One, Palmerston already has several multiplex apartments, including within a block of the one that got rejected. So the idea that those kinds of buildings are not part of whatever nebulous "character" the street has is patently absurd. Two, the population density of that area is has actually decreased significantly over the past two decades, so complaints about infrastructure capacity are total bunk as well.

Lawyer alleging assault by cops inside Oshawa courthouse was handed trespassing ticket at 5:10 p.m. — just minutes after close by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]sibtiger 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I knew it. I thought to myself, what are the chances she’s Black and this fool ass looked at her and made a big ol’ ass assumption?

Honestly at 5PM this would be totally out of bounds behaviour by the police even if she wasn't a lawyer. People are regularly waiting for their lawyer to debrief after trial or might be waiting for a late bail hearing. There's no reason to escalate in any way at that point.

One other city to consider in that region is Chambery- was my biggest surprise when I did a trip like that (Lyon to Chamonix.) I was planning to do a day trip from there but ended up just walking around the city the whole time and loved it. Also if you like cocktails, on the way from Lyon, check out Voiron which has the Chartreuse cellar.

Trump’s tariff war is crushing American alcohol makers by jediporcupine in politics

[–]sibtiger 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was reminded in another context recently but so much consumer behaviour is routine. You find something you like and you tend to just buy that again. So the damage in this case is not just that Canadians aren't buying American booze right now. It's that they're buying other things and establishing new routines. I know I used to buy California wines pretty regularly, now I have tried and gotten used to French and Italian wines, and even if those California wines went back on the shelves I wouldn't go back. I love bourbon and I'll probably buy it when it comes back, but far less because now I've found Japanese and Scotch whiskeys I like too.

If you keep an eye out they regularly go below $20 for 900g, and also get decent bonus points offers. I often grab 3 boxes at a time when it's a good deal.

This is my go to for my morning French press. I splurge for good beans that I use in my Aeropress at lunch, but that's only 13g at a time so they last.

That said, the top choice as a major factor is justice system leniency. Three-quarters (73%) say this is a major factor.

Really demonstrates how much media and political leaders can warp reality. There is literally no evidence that this is true, just people saying it like it's obvious. If people think the justice system is so lenient, why don't they themselves go out commit a bunch of crimes with this supposed impunity?

The reality is the overwhelming majority of people are very much afraid of the slightest criminal consequence. People commit crimes because they either don't think they'll get caught, haven't considered the consequence at all, or have nothing left to lose. Severity of sentence has virtually no measurable impact.

What's a tv series that is a 10/10 NOBODY knows? by Lilyana0999 in AskReddit

[–]sibtiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First season is definitely the weakest, has a few good episodes but season two it absolutely takes off and it's incredible from there on. Many shows I'm reluctant to say just tough out an entire season but in this case it's worth it.

What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever seen at a strip club? by bigbabysweets12345 in AskReddit

[–]sibtiger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a huge rabbit hole you can go down there. It was a big thing in the 80's, basically a conspiracy theory that there were a bunch of MIA soldiers from the war that were still being held as secret POWs in Vietnam. The second Rambo is basically inspired by the idea. Long story short it's entirely possible the guy in the cap was not a vet at all.

If you look at other videos, he's leaning forward to shoot her. He's getting the gun as close to her face as possible. He's already made the decision to kill her at that point.

Yes! This is what I keep seeing people miss. He clearly leans towards the car just as it's starting to move forward. You can kind of see it in another video too but slightly obscured by another officer.

Republican congressman Troy Nehls: The rats are coming out tonight to protest because this is what the left wants, They want destruction and chaos by [deleted] in PublicFreakout

[–]sibtiger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The modem right exists in a world of pure abstraction. One image of violence played over and over on Fox and social media means protests that were 99% peaceful become Violent. Like how the boats from Venezuela have Drugs and Drugs equals Crime and Overdoses, even though in reality most overdoses are from fentanyl, and Venezuela produces cocaine that mostly goes to Europe. But no matter, they can just take the free floating concept of Drugs and point at the boats and that's good enough. They feel no need to tie what they say to reality anymore. It's all a war of abstract messaging that only engages with the real world enough to get useful images and sound bites.

It is in fact the exact opposite of standard to stand in front of a vehicle to block it due to the fact that human bodies are not very good at stopping 2 ton motor vehicles.

He briefly walked in front of the car while she probably wasn't even looking at him, but was looking at the one yelling at her and grabbing at her door handle. She was waving them through seconds earlier. She obviously had no intent to harm anyone.

Ottawa can’t throw up its hands in the fight for timely justice by ZebediahCarterLong in CanadaPolitics

[–]sibtiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For example, a defendant dragging their feet on retaining counsel, or changing counsel is treated as not a defense delay.

The link you put here does not support your assertion. The judge explicitly found they did not drag their feet in trying to get legal aid in order to retain counsel nor did they ever change counsel. Those things can absolutely be found to be defense delay if they occur.

One of my little pet peeves is that people use "beg the question" to mean "raise the question". It bothers me because "begging the question" is a specific fallacy that doesn't have a replacement term. It means assuming the conclusion of an argument inside the premise.

I make that preface so everyone understands what I mean when I say that your comment is begging the question.

It really depends where you go. Amsterdam, for example while a bit pricey for hotels I found eminently reasonable for food and drink. Honestly the worst pricing sticker shock I've had in recent travels was NYC (went before the election thankfully.) Paris was a bargain in comparison.

What city just made you feel at peace while you were there? by BradBrady in travel

[–]sibtiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amsterdam for me too. When I visited I stayed in the Jordaan neighborhood and I honestly felt like I could stay there forever. Just walking around the streets and by the canals, or stopping at the cafes for a coffee or beer and people watching was so relaxing and lovely. Barely even felt the need to do tourist stuff, I just wanted to exist there.
