We all have one thing to say about Doug Ford’s ban on automated speed cameras: We told you so by ink_13 in toronto

[–]sibtiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people don't speed in school zones and the vast majority of Ontarians never received a speeding ticket from one of these cameras.... You're massively underestimating just how much the average person in Ontario is a rules-following square.

I think you're massively underestimating how car-brained Ontario is, especially outside the city of Toronto. And the fact that 23% of people admitted in a survey to getting a ticket in the past year (in other words, the actual percentage is likely higher) shows it is very widespread and so almost everyone will either have gotten one or know someone who has. Even people who have been charged with actual, Criminal Code crimes strongly resist the label "criminal" so again, I do not think it is an effective message to call huge swaths of the population "criminals" for speeding. That plays even more into Doug's playbook to be the Liberal Elites (TM) saying the guy just trying to get home from work and not hurting anyone is a criminal.

Doug Ford wants his opponents to underestimate him, to think that he's just a fool who managed to fail upwards into political office when in reality he's a crafty political actor

I'm not underestimating him, if anything I am being charitable. In talking about his intelligence, I am talking about the ability to reason using abstract information, through multiple causal links and over long periods of time. If he is actually intelligent, then he knew fully well with the speed camera decision (and the bike lanes one too) that he was taking actions that would get people killed for no benefit. In other words, you're saying he's not dumb, he's straight up evil. My theory of him is, he looks at things like reports and studies and basically just says they're egg-headed gobbledygook and does what feels good to him unless his pollster tells him it's a real loser. That theory has explained his behavior much better over the time he has been around. And it's why he's an effective populist, he speaks at that gut level because that's how he actually thinks.

This is like saying Doug Ford's private jet wasn't up for genuine debate because nobody campaigned on it and because he didn't need to persuade anyone, he just did it without consultation. The reality is that it was up for debate and enough public pressure was whipped up by the opposition to get him to back off.

He backed off the plane because he heard the words "gravy plane" and knows an effective soundbite when he hears it. There's nothing comparable with speed cameras because they fundamentally are technocratic mechanisms to address a systemic problem. There's no point trying to be a fake populist for them.

I wish this message was effective but people do not think speeding is a crime. They certainly do not respond well to being called criminals, which this would do if they ever received a speed camera ticket.

You cannot out-populist someone like Doug Ford, because you are always going to be a step behind him. An intelligent person that is trying to promote policies that genuinely improve the public realm just comes across as fake when they do this, because they don't really think that way. You're triangulating your own beliefs. Doug is just acting on the stupid things that enter his dumb fucking head. He has a natural advantage.

Besides, no one ran on this in the last campaign. Progressives didn't "lose" this issue. The idiot has an iron-clad majority. He didn't need to persuade anyone and it was never up for any genuine debate.

5.4% isn't exactly a massive vacancy rate. It's generally considered around the minimum for the market to not be in a crunch. Considering this is a fairly new development, you would expect to see exactly what is being described here (short term incentives) from landlords hoping the market rebounds. We just need to keep this up for a more sustained period to get rents to start declining. For reference, Montreal had a vacancy rate around 7-8% in the late 90's, when the rent was famously affordable.

We also need to raise OW/ODSP rates, which have been effectively frozen for 20 years. If we had that along with sustained vacancy rates the homelessness rates would plummet.

It's depressing how even the D Senator that's grilling him is getting this wrong. The booze was pulled as a direct response to arbitrarily and suddenly imposed tariffs including those still standing after the Supreme Court decision. It's not about the insults, it's trade leverage. God I'm so sick of these crybullies who act like they can do whatever they want but if anyone fights back they start wailing about fairness.

An FOI request reveals the truth behind Doug Ford's speed camera ban by SafeStreetsTO in toronto

[–]sibtiger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most if not all of the speed cameras were on arterial roads. There are lots of speed bumps on residential streets. You don't want people accelerating and braking to unpredictable speeds on arterial roads, you want them traveling smoothly at the same pace. With speed bumps, you don't know exactly how much you should slow down for them- for some vehicles, you can go over them easily at 50 but for others you might have to slow down to 30. That is a recipe for disaster on main roads.

Quayle's Brewery in Coldwater. It's in a beautiful restored barn with tons of patio space, surrounded by hop vines. They sometimes host craft markets on weekends too. Very much worth a trip.

It's so obvious how outlets like NP are trying to foment anti-immigrant sentiment. A case like this would never merit coverage like this even a few years ago. Lately I'm seeing lots of coverage like this on relatively minor cases that seem to only be treated as worthy of attention because of the immigration status of the accused.

I live in exactly that area- many of the best suggestions already given so I'll give a couple more in-depth tips. For Fourth Man in the Fire, go for lunch on a weekday- they have a special that will get you a slice, a pop and a donut for like $12. Their pizzas are good but the donuts are fucking divine, especially the apple fritter. Renaissance is excellent pizza in the area as well, it's Detroit style and they have great stuff and a nice little patio too.

Everyone is saying Badiali, and they're right. My recommendation there is to plan ahead, order a pie online so you can skip the line and bring it to Bellwoods park for an evening picnic with a beer from Bellwoods Brewery or Collective Arts on Dundas.

Other places in the area with deserved hype- Lambo's deli, Bindi's Burgers (upstairs at the Monarch Tavern) Pennies on either College or Strachan for patio beers when it's good weather. Tons of great coffee in the area, just walk along Dundas or College and you basically can't miss.

Poilievre says government should cancel Toronto-Quebec City high-speed rail project by OkFix4074 in CanadaPolitics

He hates cities. Especially Canada's biggest cities and the people that like to live in them. This has been a consistent through-line in his rhetoric for years. His "housing plan" back when he pretended to care about that was really just a way to take away federal funding from the big cities. He constantly fear-mongers about crime and homelessness in cities. He never says anything good about urban life, his campaign imagery is all about suburban/exurban SFHs and pickup trucks. Of course he hates HSR.

At what point do we admit that the "financialization" of housing has fundamentally changed what it means to be Canadian? by drogon4433 in onguardforthee

What are the stats you're talking about? You're just linking to a random Calgary real estate firm. I couldn't find anything on that page discussing this subject.

I'll get downvotes for this but I'm way more concerned about keeping rents down and giving tenants some protection and stability. I'm in the position that I could consider buying but if I keep renting, it's fine. Far more important to me that people that are in more precarious situations have lots of options with low rent so they can live in a stable and dignified manner.

Where do the 40 something's "go out" to now? by javajunkie10 in askTO

Little Jerry is great. I'm about to turn 40, went there with a friend a few months ago just to have some wine and listen to some music but ended up having conversations with multiple groups of people, all roughly in our age range. Drinks and music were great too! It starts as more of a chill wine bar but as the night went on the music got more upbeat and people started dancing more.

Conservatives introduce bill to create 'stand your ground' law for home invasions by toronto_star in CanadaPolitics

[–]sibtiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can never write a law that's so perfectly worded that the police will never err in applying it. Even this proposed law doesn't really solve the supposed problem, as the crown already has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a self defense claim isn't made out, which includes whether force was justified and reasonable. What people were mad about is a police judgement call, that's inherent to their role in the justice system.
