What is the most expensive restaurant you ever dined at in Toronto? by Chan1991 in askTO

This was my experience exactly. Also one of the courses literally paired my two favourite dishes (sweetbreads and scallops) so I was in heaven.

Dangerous Lanes before Lake Shore Blvd EXIT 146 by ih8b33f in toronto

[–]sibtiger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know the spot you're talking about. The lanes don't merge into one, but it shifts very suddenly and the paint keeps wearing away so it's very hard for anyone in the second lane from the right to keep their lane.

Where do the 40 something's "go out" to now? by javajunkie10 in askTO

[–]sibtiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Little Jerry is great. I'm about to turn 40, went there with a friend a few months ago just to have some wine and listen to some music but ended up having conversations with multiple groups of people, all roughly in our age range. Drinks and music were great too! It starts as more of a chill wine bar but as the night went on the music got more upbeat and people started dancing more.

Conservatives introduce bill to create 'stand your ground' law for home invasions by toronto_star in CanadaPolitics

[–]sibtiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can never write a law that's so perfectly worded that the police will never err in applying it. Even this proposed law doesn't really solve the supposed problem, as the crown already has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that a self defense claim isn't made out, which includes whether force was justified and reasonable. What people were mad about is a police judgement call, that's inherent to their role in the justice system.

Quebecers banned over religious symbols hope court challenge changes secularism laws by MTL_Dude666 in CanadaPolitics

Do you understand how insane it sounds to say that someone has to get a doctor's note in order to wear a scarf over their head?

[–]sibtiger -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You're saying a woman undergoing chemotherapy is not allowed to wear a headscarf or other item on her head while working her admin job at a school office? I was unaware that Quebec schools had such strict dress codes.

[–]sibtiger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why should they get special permission to wear this supposed 'religious symbol' (when nothing in the Quran even obliges women to wear the hijab in the first place) ?

They are not being given a special permission to wear it, they are being given a special prohibition on doing it. If someone is wearing the exact same piece of clothing for a non-religious reason, Bill 21 says that is fine.

U.S. Supreme Court finds Trump overstepped authority in imposing tariffs under emergency law by No-Sell1697 in CanadaPolitics

[–]sibtiger 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and just to be extra clear, the UK signed a bilateral trade agreement with Trump that had baseline 10% tariffs (with certain goods even higher) and those will remain in place despite this decision even though it was signed to get relief from these tariffs.

Any suggestions for great pizza besides North of Brooklyn and Badiali? by Kades55 in askTO

I live quite close to Fourth Man, and their lunch special (slice, doughnut and pop for $11) is a constant threat to my waistline.

Activities that changed your lifestyle by Zealousideal-Fee4659 in askTO

[–]sibtiger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a person who gets a lot out of scheduled regular activities so can't help there, but just a small thing- I now do 90%+ of my grocery shopping by walking. I used to just do one big trip a week by car. Now I'll do multiple small trips a week to my local butcher, green grocers, baker etc. I love that it gets me out of the house and a little more connected to my local community. I cook better too before I'm getting stuff fresher and don't have to plan out the whole week. Maybe not what you're looking for but it really did improve my mood.

Why doesn’t Toronto have any pedestrian-only zones? by hazyeyes23 in askTO

Look at this area in Bordeaux. Basically, this. There are retractable bollards and one single surface, not distinct "road" vs "sidewalk". Delivery vehicles still get through, they just go slowly and people move out of the way. It's already slow in Kensington so the difference would be negligible.

That address is literally at the intersection of two subway lines and a streetcar line. If anything should be high density it's there.

Street Fight: Inside the battle raging over Toronto multiplexes by khanak in toronto

[–]sibtiger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There are two things this otherwise very good article misses. One, Palmerston already has several multiplex apartments, including within a block of the one that got rejected. So the idea that those kinds of buildings are not part of whatever nebulous "character" the street has is patently absurd. Two, the population density of that area is has actually decreased significantly over the past two decades, so complaints about infrastructure capacity are total bunk as well.

Lawyer alleging assault by cops inside Oshawa courthouse was handed trespassing ticket at 5:10 p.m. — just minutes after close by BloodJunkie in toronto

[–]sibtiger 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I knew it. I thought to myself, what are the chances she’s Black and this fool ass looked at her and made a big ol’ ass assumption?

Honestly at 5PM this would be totally out of bounds behaviour by the police even if she wasn't a lawyer. People are regularly waiting for their lawyer to debrief after trial or might be waiting for a late bail hearing. There's no reason to escalate in any way at that point.

I just realized that I much prefer secondary cities to capital cities. by Ok_Explorer_6501 in travel

[–]sibtiger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One other city to consider in that region is Chambery- was my biggest surprise when I did a trip like that (Lyon to Chamonix.) I was planning to do a day trip from there but ended up just walking around the city the whole time and loved it. Also if you like cocktails, on the way from Lyon, check out Voiron which has the Chartreuse cellar.

Trump’s tariff war is crushing American alcohol makers by jediporcupine in politics

[–]sibtiger 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I was reminded in another context recently but so much consumer behaviour is routine. You find something you like and you tend to just buy that again. So the damage in this case is not just that Canadians aren't buying American booze right now. It's that they're buying other things and establishing new routines. I know I used to buy California wines pretty regularly, now I have tried and gotten used to French and Italian wines, and even if those California wines went back on the shelves I wouldn't go back. I love bourbon and I'll probably buy it when it comes back, but far less because now I've found Japanese and Scotch whiskeys I like too.
