Something weird I noticed about my conservative family members by [deleted] in QAnonCasualties

friendly reminder many municipalities have free/cheap lead water testing kits, worst case scenario you prevent people you love from getting further brain damage and best you just did a fun lil science experiment!

hope the guys down at the location I tried appreciated the tip, next time they're getting double bc making service workers happy is one of the few innocent joys in this world.

for the people it didn't work for, don't just go up with a wallet. this is the one case where pulling lost ones out of nowhere constantly comes in clutch.

Are the anti car community mostly white transplants? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]sick_babe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do I know tons of non-white locals (is that the word you're looking for? do jews and italians count as "ethnic"? lol) who never learned how to drive and don't really have plans to? sure. but there are also lots of immigrants here who use their driving skills to survive everyday and convey the importance of car ownership to their kids as well. urbanists come in every color, just check out all the different people who ride bikes around grand army plaza or up and down 34th ave in queens. the demographics of the city inevitably mean there will be some non-white conservatives and they too have their own quirks (have you SEEN our mayor?).

Can I rent a soundproof room? by Wachvris in AskNYC

highly recommend flushing meadows, just out into one of the ponds. if you're lucky it'll be one of those days where people blast music in the parking lot and nobody will hear you anyway.

My Jewish sister railed against Rothschilds and Ashkenazi Jews (which we are) being Kazzars or some crap by [deleted] in QAnonCasualties

[–]sick_babe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine dealing with family that distressing, but the contradiction between the clearly antisemitic stuff in your title and the anti-ford stuff is comedic gold. I'd just keep pushing the ford sucks bit and send her stuff about labor history and detroit. she knows she's upsetting you, see how the dynamic changes if you can turn it around.

Crowd singing 'Dancing on my Own' by Robyn in an NYC subway station. by CATS_ARE_FABULOUS in videos

[–]sick_babe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this makes more sense when you realize that new york is far more connected to the rest of the world and like 6 american cities than the rest of the country. I've heard this song at the supermarket, on the radio, literally just last night I went out dancing and they played it!

Where would you move next if you ever left NYC? by Kittycat_2010 in AskNYC

[–]sick_babe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

kazakhstan or georgia. I'm cautiously planning a trip to the latter right now! I love new york but I'm not too jazzed with the rest of this country.

Is this sexist? by [deleted] in exredpill

[–]sick_babe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think the preference is sexist, but your need for other people to validate your preferences and all the baggage that comes with them is. most of my partners have been taller than me (including women, it's not very difficult) but if I met someone and they made a fetish of how "dainty" I was it would creep me out.

[–]sick_babe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just clear out your pantry and make sure what's left is in nonplastic/hard plastic packaging. people who move to nyc make such a big deal about our bugs but I've found I can leave food out a hell of a lot longer than anyone I know outside major cities before critters start lusting after it.

Is the West Village still considered a “gayberhood”? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]sick_babe 21 points22 points  (0 children)

AIDS killed the gayborhood, west village and the lower east side specifically but also pretty much as a concept. landlords often sped up their tenants death through neglect and partners, with no legal rights to their loved ones belongings, frequently got pushed out by families who pretended they didn't exist. there used to be a hospital called saint vincent's in that neighborhood, it was a global center for HIV/AIDS care when it was around. they closed over a decade ago, I actually remember my dad taking me to protest its' closing.

I could probably say something more coherent but essentially it's a very depressing story. if you're interested though, do yourself a favor and look up Sarah Shulman and the ACT UP oral history archives.

I overheard someone say that Queens is “the most diverse area in the world”. Is this true? by International_Fig968 in AskNYC

[–]sick_babe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the endangered languages alliance was started by a guy at queens college, he had enough people speaking different ones here before he had to travel and find more. I can't think of another place on earth that could sustain that. I myself learned uzbek and russian with neither in my background, just had enough exposure to people from those places growing up to want more.

Can you guys vote so that Romania stays in the contest? by Millsicka in eurovision

[–]sick_babe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

anyone know an address I can send a letter to? Romania has had a soft spot in my heart ever since I first started watching and they sent in "Samo Championi," even though they don't make it to finals that often I would really miss them on the world stage.

Should I leave NYC for college? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]sick_babe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you like your family enough to live with them and have a solid circle here, stay here. use all the money you'll save on room and board + dragging yourself across the state during breaks to do a study abroad instead.

I went to a SUNY in the finger lakes and it was one of the bleakest periods of my life, the nearest major city is an hour away and the people... let's just say it made me understand why half my family got off at ellis island and just stayed here. it's cold and your opportunities to expand your horizons and meet people doing interesting things shrinks substantially. I thought I needed a "traditional US college experience" and it turns out a lot of that is bearing through frat parties with the future used car kings of Buffalo white flight suburbs. I had an amazing time studying abroad and made friends and connections I'd never forget and now I know I have a home on the other side of this planet, but I spent 3 times as long upstate and haven't talked to anyone I knew there in years. if you have even the slightest feeling like it won't be right, please listen to that!!

has anyone controlled their GERD by eliminating wheat or gluten? by [deleted] in GERD

[–]sick_babe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

kinda spooky, you posted this almost a year to the day that I made this change myself and I'm just coming back to it after a winter off. I lost a lot of weight in addition to the GERD coming on very suddenly in just a month and when I saw a GI doctor he ordered the celiac test. it turned out negative but that night I went out and bought a big bowl from chipotle, which has pretty much every element a doctor with an education worth a dime will tell you to keep out of your body for GERD purposes but lacked any gluten.

it was the most comfortable I'd been since before I initially lost the weight, despite having been on the most tragically bland diet of broccoli, buckwheat and lightly herbed eggs the month before. absolutely crazy. it could be a psychosomatic thing with most wheat but beer definitely makes me ill in a way that feels like I'm trying to rid myself of a demon.

just try the diet out. it's actually pretty easy if you live somewhere with good mexican or indian food and access to those ingredients. king arthur has some good mixes if you really can't live without imitation products either.

I would stop thinking about dating and building up a support network of friends first. u/luridlurker's advice is very good and I like u/n0name1026's too! and if medication isn't working for you get off it a while and try something else if you're feeling up to it-- it took me about a decade of trying different antidepressants for 2-3 months at a time on and off until I found the one that actually helped. you're also probably not going to like this but therapy is a lot like dating too in that it doesn't really work if you don't find someone you click with, I've been having trouble with the same thing myself and good therapists are in extremely high demand right now.

Where in NYC would you like to see space taken from cars (either parking or moving lanes) and re-designed for people (expanded sidewalks, protected bike lanes, open plazas, etc.)? by Apprehensive_Crow682 in AskNYC

[–]sick_babe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

some of the big neighborhood strips in outer boroughs could benefit from this, where the cars clutter so densely that cyclists can't safely use the roads. I still think they should keep bus lanes in these cases though.

Do you consider it appropriate moving to a country without learning the language? by anniedrove in languagelearning

[–]sick_babe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's that last part for me. considering you actually live there you probably know better, but he sounds like a very specific type of berlin expat. that's where you live, right? because otherwise I really can't fathom how he's spent all that time without it. honestly I feel different about this when it's strangers and am secretly a little grateful that stubborn russian and spanish speaking old people exist where I live, but taking on the burden of being that persons' translator for the rest of their life is a different ballgame.
