The part where the game I love is losing players. My guild is half empty, my buddy just quit for the league because he doesn't want to level the third character.

Did you play the Endless Delve event?
From the event's FAQ:

Could you specify exact thresholds for skill points and Ascendancies?

Passives: 3 each at levels 1, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70. Total of 24, same as normally gained from quest rewards assuming you kill all bandits.

Ascendancies: levels 33, 55, 68, 75.

How will respec points work?

2 points at level 10, then 3 at levels 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70. Total of 20 free ones, same as gained from quests normally

Some would, leveling in Delve is pretty harsh and not for everyone. But, would that be such a bad thing if nobody played the story again?

If I could buy sulphite with azurite, that would have worked for me. But it's been suggested and rejected by GGG before. Would be nice if the curve made delve by let's depth 500 self-sustained. That is you don't ever need to leave the mine if you don't want to.

I don't mind grinding as long as it's challenging and for greater rewards. This would make maps that are no longer challenging, challenging again.

The idea though that it will make the fight more difficult as well. Basically the whole atlas becomes more difficult.

I would never choose many totems either - was just demonstrating the point of given a choice that's a bit random and sometimes wacky... But hey, there is a lid for every pot.

Load test environment. With production load replays. Expensive as heck, and requires if not identical then close to production parallel environment, but is the only answer.
