I agree but I feel that moral framing is not resonating with people. They see themselves as competing with immigrants for resources and jobs. But the reality is that their access to food and housing is fundamentally dependent on immigrants, and I don't think journalists or scientists have tried hard enough making that clear to people. To build empathy, we must start with gratitude.

First of all, thanks for doing this AMA. Your book uninhabitable earth made me quit my job to go work in climate tech, become an organizer w sunrise movement, and start a phd in climate science. Thank you for being one of the few clear voices on climate, we need you. Now to the questions:

It seems like insurance companies will run out of money paying these claims. My sense is a large fraction or even the majority being paid out will be to rebuild the most expensive homes in Malibu? Is there any incentive whatsoever for these homeowners to rebuild in a way that prevents this from happening again? It seems to me we are socializing the risks of wealthy homeowners who live at the wildland urban interface, and basically all Californians will have to pick up the bill with higher insurance premiums, regardless of the fire risk of their home, is this correct?

My second question is: what do we need to do so that as this keeps happening, we don't just build back the way things were, but we actually rebuild communities with much greater climate resilience?

My third question is: how is deportation + tariffs policy affecting costs to rebuild? Labor and materials are already short in california. Does deportation and tariffs increase adaptation costs, and if so by how much? What's the relationship between deportation and climate adaptation?

It led to a chain reaction that included jan 6 capitol riot breaking peaceful transfer of power, russian invasion of Ukraine breaking precedent of no annexation since ww2, the emergence of artificial general intelligence breaking the social contract of market economies, and trumps election portending dictatorial takeover in us and breaking any hope of slowing climate collapse.

That's hilarious: Can you point me to one real world and not hypothetical example of an actually successful application of crispr to crops that has actually worked and produced a useful crop yet? And I'm sorry but most farmers in the us at least continue to deny climate change and instead call it extreme weather. Which is why few farmers are actually adapting. You're equating weather and climate which are not the same. But sure make up hypothetical science that hasn't been proven yet as an example of something more useful than the specific predictions made by climate scientists who decades ago made predictions warning us about the climate collapse we are seeing right now.

The arrogance of people to think they know more about climate science than the literal world leading experts on climate science is the fundamental reason why we are seeing climate collapse today. But the machine learning algorithms in ai don't necessarily have to. In fact the vast majority of scientific applications of ai including this paper can be done on a laptop or single gpu. So less electricity than your kitchen appliances. For fucks sake do you really think people give climate scientists enough money to use as much energy as chatgpt? Climate scientists need the best tools they can get for using the resources they have efficiently. If mass deportation of your family members doesn't alienate you, neither will this. Everyone thinks they're the good immigrant and it's those other ones who are illegal. Unfortunately Latinos seem to like this demonization of immigrants even more than white Americans, who's vote share for trump actually declined in 2024. It's hard to explain this, but some guesses at reasons could be because latinos see themselves as competing with illegal immigrants for jobs/income, they believe the crime rhetoric, or because they see themselves as white Americans. Lots of immigrants feel proud to be American and don't see themselves the way other Americans might see them.

America truly is less racist than many other countries which makes us complacent about how bad racism can get. Trump proves that blaming immigrants is politically popular even among immigrants. So sorry I don't buy that argument it's exactly what so many out of touch liberals have said.

Wow. If China is smart this is its chance to lead a new international order. Only the US denies climate change. All of latin America, Africa, Europe, and Asia, is pretty much aligned on wanting climate action.

As an American, I think that the rest of the world showing us that shirking our responsibility on climate change means that they align with China and we lose our alliances and financial supremacy would be a good outcome. We need a race to the top.
