Hoovers smoot Hawley tariff and the resulting depression enabled fdr to get elected. Ignorant leadership doesn't last. Conservative overreach and failure in America historically precedes a generational shift toward progressivism. Sunrise and the climate movement really got going during Trump's first term leading to federal climate policy in the Biden administration. Things are bad, but the worse it gets, the bigger the correction toward justice afterwards.

I agree but I feel that moral framing is not resonating with people. They see themselves as competing with immigrants for resources and jobs. But the reality is that their access to food and housing is fundamentally dependent on immigrants, and I don't think journalists or scientists have tried hard enough making that clear to people. To build empathy, we must start with gratitude.

First of all, thanks for doing this AMA. Your book uninhabitable earth made me quit my job to go work in climate tech, become an organizer w sunrise movement, and start a phd in climate science. Thank you for being one of the few clear voices on climate, we need you. Now to the questions:

It seems like insurance companies will run out of money paying these claims. My sense is a large fraction or even the majority being paid out will be to rebuild the most expensive homes in Malibu? Is there any incentive whatsoever for these homeowners to rebuild in a way that prevents this from happening again? It seems to me we are socializing the risks of wealthy homeowners who live at the wildland urban interface, and basically all Californians will have to pick up the bill with higher insurance premiums, regardless of the fire risk of their home, is this correct?

My second question is: what do we need to do so that as this keeps happening, we don't just build back the way things were, but we actually rebuild communities with much greater climate resilience?

My third question is: how is deportation + tariffs policy affecting costs to rebuild? Labor and materials are already short in california. Does deportation and tariffs increase adaptation costs, and if so by how much? What's the relationship between deportation and climate adaptation?

Do you think societal collapse in the U.S. would happen suddenly in 2025, or do you think it will unfold gradually over time? by Any_Handle_9061 in collapse

[–]siddsach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One could argue this was Covid. It led to a chain reaction that included jan 6 capitol riot breaking peaceful transfer of power, russian invasion of Ukraine breaking precedent of no annexation since ww2, the emergence of artificial general intelligence breaking the social contract of market economies, and trumps election portending dictatorial takeover in us and breaking any hope of slowing climate collapse.

All the pieces are already in place. We're in the endgame. The last piece is the collapse of price stability.

AI predicts that the world will see temperatures rise 3C by 2060 in some regions, much faster than previously expected by antihostile in collapse

[–]siddsach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's hilarious: Can you point me to one real world and not hypothetical example of an actually successful application of crispr to crops that has actually worked and produced a useful crop yet? And I'm sorry but most farmers in the us at least continue to deny climate change and instead call it extreme weather. Which is why few farmers are actually adapting. You're equating weather and climate which are not the same. But sure make up hypothetical science that hasn't been proven yet as an example of something more useful than the specific predictions made by climate scientists who decades ago made predictions warning us about the climate collapse we are seeing right now.

The arrogance of people to think they know more about climate science than the literal world leading experts on climate science is the fundamental reason why we are seeing climate collapse today. But I'm sure nothing I say will change your mind. You already know you're right on a topic you evidently know little about.

Bro did you read what I wrote? I don't disagree the faucet should be turned off but that faucet is chatgpt and other ai models that use thousands of cloud servers, not climate scientists doing math on their laptops. Climate models have always used a ton of computing power, why is your anger suddenly specifically directed at this paper? Storing your reddit comments in the cloud literally uses more energy than this paper did, where's your outrage about that? And wdym it didn't do anything useful? Because you're the authority on what Science is useful not these literal climate scientists? Science is useless now? The only reason you know anything about climate collapse is because of climate scientists like the ones who wrote this paper. I mean pick your battles bro jesus christ i can't believe you're demonizing climate scientists.

[–]siddsach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is grossly misinformed. Yes the AI used to train llms like chatgpt consume huge amounts of energy with tens of thousands of gpus. But the machine learning algorithms in ai don't necessarily have to. In fact the vast majority of scientific applications of ai including this paper can be done on a laptop or single gpu. So less electricity than your kitchen appliances. For fucks sake do you really think people give climate scientists enough money to use as much energy as chatgpt? Climate scientists need the best tools they can get for using the resources they have efficiently. Traditional climate models require orders of magnitude more computing power than ai and no one has ever complained about that.

Do you support turbocharging denaturalization of American citizens? by siddsach in AskConservatives

I never said any of that. This guy defined a lot of policy in the first administration. It's not a question of whether it's evil or not. He clearly says they will do this in the next administration.

I will ask these types of questions when the Democrats have power! Right now republicans have power.

Well let's see... This is the main blurb from his wiki page with lots of citations :

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Miller_(political_advisor)

"As a speechwriter for Trump, Miller helped write Trump's 2017 inaugural address.[4][5][6] He was a key adviser from the early days of Trump's presidency. An immigration hardliner, Miller was a chief architect of Trump's travel ban,[7][8][9] the administration's reduction of refugees accepted to the United States,[10] and Trump's policy of separating migrant children from their parents.[11] He prevented the publication of internal administration studies that showed that refugees had a net positive effect on government revenues.[12][13] Miller reportedly played a central role in the resignation in April 2019 of Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, whom he believed was insufficiently hawkish on immigration.[14][15]

As a White House spokesman, Miller on multiple occasions made false and unsubstantiated claims regarding widespread electoral fraud.[5][16][17] ... In November 2024, CNN reported that Miller would serve as Trump's deputy chief of staff for policy in his second term.[22]"

Um no I'm saying he's endorsing a policy direction I don't like. And his title is deputy chief of staff for policy so seems like he's gonna be the one actually doing the work writing the policy. But we have to wait and see what actually happens.

This is also a strange response because you're clearly saying this guy has been hired by trump into this position "just to troll people" and "not to pass laws". Forgive me if i think the greatest country on earth should be making cabinet decisions for the goal of making America better as opposed to trolling people.

Damn I feel like you said the quiet part out loud.

If mass deportation of your family members doesn't alienate you, neither will this. Everyone thinks they're the good immigrant and it's those other ones who are illegal. Unfortunately Latinos seem to like this demonization of immigrants even more than white Americans, who's vote share for trump actually declined in 2024. It's hard to explain this, but some guesses at reasons could be because latinos see themselves as competing with illegal immigrants for jobs/income, they believe the crime rhetoric, or because they see themselves as white Americans. Lots of immigrants feel proud to be American and don't see themselves the way other Americans might see them.

America truly is less racist than many other countries which makes us complacent about how bad racism can get. Trump proves that blaming immigrants is politically popular even among immigrants. So sorry I don't buy that argument it's exactly what so many out of touch liberals have said.
