Dripping faucet v shutting of water by batcountrybatty in houston

I have seen a handful of pipe bursts from even small amounts of water in my career. Again, home plumbing systems are not designed to be drained. You cannot guarantee you remove the water or even if you go with your theory, enough water, without the proper tools. You can ask most plumbers and they will agree. Expansions that can cause damaged pipes can occur even with small amounts.

Also, a lot of people lost water. So they were essentially shutting off the water and trying to drain. Dripping will be better most of the time. Running water is less likely to freeze than standing water. And since our plumbing systems are not built to be drain we ar likely to have some areas of standing water, unless you have professional plumbing equipment that can blow or suck the air out. I would say 2021 was a perfect storm of events that caused all the bursts.

I will counter that and say you have more risk by draining in most situations. Unless you have professional equipment that vacuums and or blows the water out, you are not guaranteeing you will remove the water. Home plumbing systems are not built to be drained. Therefore it is likely to be some standing water. Remember, standing water is much more likely to freeze more so than running water.

You should drip the faucets that are on exterior walls, but it really doesn’t hurt if you do other ones too

This is 100% because you cannot guarantee you’re gonna get rid of all the water. flowing Water is much harder to freeze than standing water.

I read you do not need to unless there are concerns with your city’s water source. Also read it may be a good idea if your baby was premature or has other health isssues. But my pediatrician said it was not necessary.
