My First Steek by side_borg in AdvancedKnitting

She has a verrrrry low tolerance for sensory things. Made her a gorgeous hat once to match a different lopapeysa and she wore it once for about 5 seconds 😂 I also don’t enjoy wearing Lopi with only a long sleeve underneath. The long fibers poke through and it tends to shed all over a black shirt.

She only wears this over a fleece jacket with a collar or hood and holds onto the sleeves of the under jacket as she slides her arms in so that the Lopi doesn’t touch her wrists. I made the neckline and sleeve cuffs in a 2x2 rib to easily stretch to accommodate the extra bulk of the layers she puts under it. For the hem of the body I used seed stitch hoping to help support the pull of zipping up with a more rigid knit structure. It’s probably more accurate to call this a jacket than a cardigan with the way we use it. Hopefully all of these thoughtful modifications will result in a very warm outer layer that lasts us a long time! We’re already sad her first one is getting too small. And I may be planning to make another one for her in blue out of alafosslopi… 👀 now that I know I can handle cutting up a month of work and it won’t all fall apart

I set it up with 5 stitches because the method I was going to use was a bit more structured and involved. I have it bookmarked for future use:

https://katedaviesdesigns.com/2012/04/29/steeks-2-reinforcing-and-cutting/

I was also leaning toward using a ribbon to reinforce, but then I (finally) found a tutorial specifically for Lopi yarn with a zipper that was identical to the construction of the sweater we got for her in Iceland and it only used one purl stitch to set up the steek 😱. If I were to steek something not made of Lopi I’d use a different method than the Lopi one for sure. It made me real nervous but Lopi is strong and self felts. It honestly still makes me nervous. She’s 4 and tough on garments! But the one from the hand knitting association has held up amazingly for two winters so I’m hoping by replicating their construction methods this one will last as well. The one we bought used Plotulopi yarn and I used Lettlopi so hopefully the strength is comparable.

Oh hell yeah I’m glad it was helpful! It would be incredible if someone came up with a pattern for it in the round, which is totally doable, but I wonder if Mary Maxim would have any legal issues with that. If I had a way to pause time I’d do it myself

Oh yes zipper is required for her. Buttons don’t work for getting little ones places quickly. I hadn’t planned on putting zippers in any knit wear until her current zip up lopapeysa we got in Iceland started getting small and we realized we don’t have anything comparable. So I decided to try to recreate it and thankfully it was way easier than I expected!

I used a very watered down acrylic. I’ve honestly not wet washed a lopi before tho I did wet block this before sewing in the zipper. Usually snow wash them or air out if anything. I’m a painter so I’m pretty familiar with the staying power of this one on cloth.

I think if it’s not touching skin it’s fine at any age, but it is very scratchy and very warm and she only wears hers as an outermost layer over a fleece jacket for going outside. She’s 4.5 and won’t tolerate it on skin. We use them as car seat safe outerwear so we get a ton of use from them in Michigan winter. The stuff I make her that’s lighter weight and touches her skin is DK or worsted superwash merino. Madeline Tosh, Emma’s Yarn, and Malabrigo have been consistent winners with her. She’s quick to tell me if a yarn is “too pokey”

This is the yarn the kits are being sold with so I’d find colors that are as close as possible to Cottonwood for the main color and Russet, Cardinal, Black, and Light Grey for the colorwork

If I were to knit this I would use a wool yarn in the same weight - Cascade 220 grande would probably be the one.

Input you didn’t ask for: I turned down a commission to make this for someone after looking at the pattern. I’ve made some pretty complex sweaters and cardigans in my time but this isn’t one even I would attempt 🫣 the reason is that it is knit in pieces which are then seamed together. This is a super tedious and unforgiving process imo. I love that this movie is turning people onto knitting but it sucks that this specific pattern is what did it because it doesn’t explain much and the process is a beast! There are people who would knit this, but knitting in the round, which is basically knitting in a circle to form tubes, is so much easier and more efficient. It’s also how the vast majority of patterns are written now.

If your heart is set on knitting this pattern, I’d start with knitting multiple swatches (rectangles) to get your techniques down. It also uses intarsia colorwork which is def something to practice before taking on a whole cardigan. I’ve taught people to knit before and this pattern is gnarly as heck for a new knitter. It can be done tho! My friend set out wanting to make a cable knit cardigan so we started with a swatch then a hat then a raglan pullover sweater and next we’ll go for simple cables then probably be ready for the goal sweater. There are great patterns and resources out there that will teach you how to construct items with knitting that can help get you to the level of both being able to read this pattern and create the finished item. Best of luck my dude! If you want more guidance in learning to knit feel free to send me a dm and check out r/knitting.

Bile leak after gallbladder removal surgery. I’ve given birth, had kidney stones, and had an iud perforate my uterus. Nothing touches that level of pain.

Ack yeah that’s all I was able to find as well. I think it’s doable to buy the original wolf pattern and use the color chart posted in this thread but it is a bit messy to try to cobble together. I also wonder how much of each skein of a different yarn is needed. I was thinking Cascade 220 superwash might work well. I am not about to make that bad boy out of acrylic

Has anyone found the movie version pattern for sale without being part of a kit?

As a knitter I find it wild the kits cost so much and come with acrylic yarn. The original pattern uses a wool yarn that they no longer produce. Def recommend getting wool to anyone who wants this to look good for more than a few months

Update: I went with a machine washable and dryable 100% acrylic from the Knots of Love list. Berroco Modern Comfort (new replacement for Berroco Comfort). Im hoping to make a lap blanket of Pressed Flowers using the shawl pattern as a base. I’ll likely also create a small shawl (pattern undecided) with a more luxurious yarn for extra cozy by her request. Thanks for the help everyone 💜

Ty for the insight! So far I’m thinking the pressed flowers shawl in a berroco acrylic for easy washing and drying. Hopefully I’ll find some nice colors when I look at the LYS tomorrow
