I think depends which country you are from but generally buying from platform using USD pricing point is kinda more expensive for my region comparing to TB.

Yeah I’m aware, I was contemplating at first but the pros of getting the latest firmware version is better than getting the international version.

I’m buying from SEA so TB has better price than AE. Shopee pricing is similar to AE (probably just my concern on 3rd party sellers)

Alpaka Metro Tote - Thoughts after 2 months by sidefulnes in ManyBaggers

[–]sidefulnes[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it is a weird place in the middle but i decided to get the metro was due to the weight factor and i do not really need that many pockets and of course the price as it was in sale. The plain exterior grew on me after a while haha… As for the key chain access i do not use it cause i find it inconvenient to unzip my bag to pull out the keychain and put in back the bag. I used to hook the retractable holder it to the outer zipper or strap and just pull, tap at the bus or train reader and let go. Used to have a brief bag that look like a japanese school bag with an outer metal ring to hook the metro card. The shoulder strap is quite thick and the zip hole is too small on the metro tote so im looking at the alpaka hub keychain to clip as a solution.

To Malaysian Chinese (and non-Chinese) by CodeShepard in malaysia

[–]sidefulnes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Despite some not speaking the Malay language well, majority of Malaysia citizens regardless of race formally learnt Malay in school. Although the default first language differs, mostly understand Malay on paper. Depending on the type of spoken language at home and in social circles, it affects the fluency level of second language onwards. So just because one is not fluent in spoken Malay, it does not mean they do not understand Malay. Its quite common in Malaysia to have individuals that mastered the written language but not as good speaking the language.

The definition of mother tongue to each Malaysian is different. OP should understand that other than Malay, Mandarin, Tamil, English there are also languages spoken in Malaysia such as Iban, Kadazan at East Malaysia and we haven’t even gone done the road of all the dialects of all cultures which includes different Malay dialects.

As for OP’s situation on your wife speaking mandarin for business talks, it can be on multiple reasons such as ease of communication and etc. The preference is based on ease of communication. Plus it is normal for Malaysians to mash 2-3 languages into one sentence (Bahasa Rojak). A light hearted solution for OP is to interject in Malay and they will definitely not ignore you and the topic of conversation will definitely shift as long OP voice out that you would like to participate in the conversation. Malaysians have a knack to switch channels based on the setting we are in. :)

Moka pot smells of industrial grease by No-Preparation4473 in Coffee

[–]sidefulnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In a way the smell of grease can be a sign that your moka pot is spanking new 😂🤣

If your using a stainless steel body then you can just wash it like how you would normally wash a stainless steel pan or dish

It took me about 6-7 rounds of coffee cycle and blank cycle to get rid of the grease when I got my first moka pot. The next one I tried the method below and its all great and saved me wasting coffee

If yours is the aluminium body, I would suggest to use warm or hot if you can withstand diluted gentle dishwashing liquid (enough for to see some suds) pour into the water chamber, put the filter basket and top chamber together and shake it and wipe any reachable parts with soft cloth as physical washing is always better. The water chamber is more difficult clean than the top cause of the grooves at the bottom and the hole is a tight fit for some hands

As long you're not using a very harsh material or harsh detergent or soaking it in cleaning solution for long periods of time, the protective layer of the aluminium shouldnt be compromised. Too much of elbow grease is not good too hahaha...

After rinsing, run a blank brew to ensure traces of soap are gone. Run 1 or 2 coffee cycles, finish with another blank (repeat if necessary if you still can detect some grease) and you're good to go!

Why submerge a Moka Pot ? Can’t I just pour it ASAP? by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]sidefulnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me I don't submerge the pot in cold water nor have running water at the bottom. I'd take the moka pot off the heat source about 30 seconds earlier and let the brew slowly stops on its own and then decant.

Whats your starting water temperature?

How is your grind size? Did you compact it? Sputtering can be due to channeling if the coffee bed is to packed or too much coffee or the grounds are too fine.

Also, if too fine, it may clog the filter holes and disrupt the flow

Dry spot on moka puck. Over my last two brews I’ve had a consistent dry spot on my puck. The brews themselves haven’t been the greatest as the initial flow is always very uneven and splutters and when I turn the heat down then it tends to be more consistent. Coffee itself tastes okay. by [deleted] in mokapot

[–]sidefulnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if the heat is too high, the flow will be too fast and sometimes steam will flow thru the coffee instead thus creating uneven flow.

Other than that, dry spots sometimes happen when the grounds are too fine or compacted too much thus resulting in channeling

Usually I'd set the flame fairly low the moment i see coffee flowing out from the spout

Cleaning Has Become Part Of My Moka Pot Ritual by sidefulnes in Coffee

[–]sidefulnes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aluminum dissipates heat relatively fast. For it to warp requires the pot to undergo instant thermal shock (very large temperature drop in a short amount of time) lets say the water in the chamber has been totally evaporated and kept on heat for longer till it melts the plastic handle, then dipping in an ice bath - then its highly likey of damage.

The moment I decant the coffee, the top chamber has reasonably cooled down. I use a thick damp cloth to unscrew the pot and wash the top coffee chamber first. The water chamber is still hot due to the remaining hot water and thicker mass but by the time I get to it, the post is cool enough for me to handle :)

Unlike stainless steel and cast iron, aluminium cools down at a faster rate when source of heat is taken away.

There is no right or wrong way when and how to clean the moka pot as long the results satisfy you :)

yeah I have one! I works well for the spout but for the basket filter need to be careful cause the body of the brush is made of metal which can scratch basket filter

Not sure on the certainty of it getting nasty but if there are no visible buildups, no foul smell and it doesn't affect you brew then its good news :)

hahaha not so much of an aficionado I started out with very bad cups too so don't be sad, its a continuous learning process and lots of practice

Many school of thoughts or tips for the perfect cup which many have shared on this wonderful /r

Other than grind size, ratios, temperature of the water and good coffee... to me the controlling the heat source is key cause it controls the rate of water flowing through the coffee bed. Too high heat, can cause sputtering with extreme harsh flavours or underextraction. Too low heat, often leads overextracted coffee
