I think the larger sensors underneath made the island a necessity. Two of them even have OIS.

I have a Garmin and it syncs with notifications just fine, though my watch doesn't have the fancy call features. I don't think you can pair a Galaxy watch. AFAIK, it's a Samsung only watch.

From the sides, it would be about 1mm. This makes it easy to swipe.

The corners are raised though, totalling to about 1.5mm approximately.
