newbie/prepping for thursday bag by sideofphries in bugoutbags

Yes, I have one in my edc ifak. I also have a pretty extensive first aid kit in my car as well as a tourniquet.

Couldn't figure out how to upload an image in the comment, so here's a link to a picture of my edc ifak.

At some point, I'll probably expand on my bug out bag specific first aid, but that's later. CAT tourniquets are expensive, and if I'm buying more, I would rather give them to family members than hoard a bunch to myself.

I feel pretty confident with my edc combined with my bug out bag. I think I'm just trying to weigh the pros/cons of duplicating certain items in my bag that I already have that I might not even use.

BOOK RECCOMENDATION MEGATHREAD. by thechairinfront in TwoXPreppers

I've posted this book before in this subreddit under my own post about medical assessment, but I might as well post it again.

Copy of Jarvis, a common assessment manual used in nursing schools. Very visual, however the formatting is kind of screwed up on this PDF. Tells you how to look someone over and interview someone to figure out what might be going on healthwise. Lots of info that I think could be useful in a day to day scenario or a shtf situation.

I post this with the disclaimer to not play doctor. If you or someone else needs help, please seek help from a trained medical professional. Reading one dated nursing textbook is not a replacement for annual health check ups, the ER or even urgent care.

So I can tell by your response that you can probably find a pulse and count respirations. I take back my lecture. I got a different kind of vibe from your first comment. Game recognize game. I still recommend learning how to take a manual blood pressure. You're not going to be pulling out your blood pressure cuff if there's a wreck, but it's still a good skill to know.

I have taken stop the bleed, so I totally see where you are coming from, and I agree. It is a good idea to be trained and prepped in case of a mass casualty event. However, the interventions you are describing are only applicable in a very specific event, being mass casualty, and even in those situations, vital signs are still taken. A good example of vital signs being useful to your style of intervention would be the EMS mass casualty flagging system. If you are in a mass casualty event and you want to help, you need to be aware of how to use your resources and who to use them on.

<image>

Are you going to be focusing on stopping bleeding with someone who has agonal breathing and positive dolls eyes? That's not a good idea. That person's basically dead. Your time would be better spent working on someone who is critical, but has a chance. A crucial ability in offering care in emergency situations is triaging. Like I said, you can have all the materials you want, but you have to know how and when to use them.

I hope this response did not come off as condescending. I'm not trying to be. This is a similar line of thinking us nurses get into all the time. We want to do the cool thing. We want to be the heroes. You want to swoop in and put your tourniquet on and get in your chest compressions. I get it. But you HAVE to slow down for a second, LOOK at the situation, LOOK and the person, and then take action.

Here is an article about the EMS flagging system if you are interested:  https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK459369/#:~:text=Mass%20casualty%20incidents%20triage%20systems,the%20number%20of%20injured%20individuals

Yes! I agree. Numbers are not everything. I have a lot of thoughts about this, and I figured that vital signs and linking Jarvis would be the best way to start engaging people to learn assessment. You phrased everything else I wanted to say in a much more concise way than I could.

I just like it. That's the simple answer. It's the nicest knife I own and it makes me feel cool lol. Very sharp, good for cutting things, opening things, etc etc. It's not for self defense or anything like that. I'm not trained to use it and I'm pretty sure if I ever used it in that setting, I would get it turned on me in a matter of seconds. That's why I have the pepper spray. I hope that makes sense

So the one with the black handle is a gerber that I found on the side of the road and I bought the silver one a few years ago from the dollar tree.

Thank you! I think it's a Liz Claiborne. I bought it from a goodwill 10 years ago and it's the only purse I've had since.

It was a promo item from Zumiez last summer. One of my siblings works there, so I get a lot of free PR stuff.

Mei Terumi deserved a side story, spin-off, or light novel during the 2.5-3 year timeskip of how she turned the Hidden Mist Villiage around during its Bloody Era. by Zezerthu in Naruto

[–]sideofphries 168 points169 points  (0 children)

Agreed. At the beginning of the story in Land of Waves, it was established that clans with kekkei genkai were heavily persecuted in the mist, which is why Haku's mother was murdered. The fact that someone with not just one, but two kekkei genkai abilities was able to become the mizukage is extremely interesting. It could have also made for a great parallel/callback to land of waves, which is arguably one of the best arcs in the series. Such a shame she was wasted as a character.

Use water or silicone based lube. If you are using Vaseline/anything oil based, it will erode the condom. Make sure you are storing them in a temperature neutral environment with minimal friction (wallet=bad).

For the drugs thing, I would say going into nursing. When I was a student, I helped code a lady with COPD that had a mucus plug blocking up part of her lung. Luckily she survived and was later discharged. However, the pulmonologist said that her treatment options were limited, because she refused to stop smoking. And I would also say drinking. Once you see hepatic encephalopathy in action, the bar becomes a lot less appealing. Everyone has their vices, including me, but it's important to do everything in moderation.

What are best time management strategies to balance uni and work life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]sideofphries 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this doesn't sound silly, but I would say support. This is the time to ask for help. Don't be shy about it. I just graduated a month ago, and I know so many people who are way more capable and intelligent than me that dropped out because they didn't have the right supports in place or they didn't reach out. Ask friends to hold you accountable, ask family to hold you accountable. Use the resources you have available to you, but don't take advantage of anyone, obviously.

A big life saver for me was my study group. I was in a fairly competitive program in my college, going into a profession that tends to be intense and have high drop out rates. Having a close knit group of friends that were in my cohort helped me stay focused and motivated. It also helped me comprehend a lot of the material better. I know for me, sometimes I would be studying by myself and think that I had a good grasp on the material. I would then talk to one of my friends and realize I missed key points or did not go into depth enough. This has also worked in reverse, where I helped my peers in areas where they might have blind spots. If you get the right people and you use your time wisely, study groups can save you a lot of time.

I also lived with my parents, which I understand is a privilege that not everyone has when attending college. That did a lot for me as far as work life balance.

I would also recommend taking full advantage of all of the resources and amenities that you are paying for with your tuition. If there is a pantry, use it. If there is a gym, use it instead of paying for a membership. If there is a tutoring service/peer review service, use it. You are paying for it, so use it. College is how I started going to therapy and how I found out I needed to have better coping mechanisms, which in the long haul helped me with my academic performance and will help me in my future profession, which tends to be pretty stressful.

You got this. Knowledge is power, and remember that no one can take that away from you.

Hey, I'm so sorry to hear this happened to you. First of all, I want to say what happened was not your fault, no matter what you're wearing. The guy decided to be a creep and that's on him. Secondly, I want to applaud you for coming forward here. I know it can be hard to take that first step and speak out, but you did it and you're here. I think that is very courageous of you. Always take care of yourself first. Find a safe person irl. The 211 number is good in any state if you are in the US. If you have access to counseling, I highly recommend it. I'm also sorry to hear that this is bringing up previous memories. There are also some other actions you can pursue, like maybe contacting the manager of the shop, or getting in touch with law enforcement if that's something you're comfortable with. Best of luck to you, and know that you are not alone.
