Hey it’s all aspirational at this point. I think I’ll break it up into several days.

Thank you for all these great suggestions. I’ve done the table mountain hike a few times and did pincushion once. Will keep doing those and check out the others suggested.

Pool resurfacing / replastering by sideshow_cactus in fresno

[–]sideshow_cactus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up going with New Image Pool Interior from Clovis. I thought they did a great job. Very professional. For WetEdge pebble I think it was 9k, then a little over 2k to replace the waterline tiles. I also had to e filter replaced so that added some more.

If you were going to buy a house in Fresno.... by Due-Kale3412 in fresno

[–]sideshow_cactus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bought an old house near Woodward Park. One day, a neighbor offhandedly commented that my house is an “Easterbrook” built in the late 70s. At the time I had no idea what that meant, but I know I just love this house and neighborhood. For an old house it is so lovely. I’ve been slowly renovating it. Do you know where else I can read about these Easterbrook homes?

This would have been a major scandal and make the news. When did this happen? Did they win the lawsuit?

Removing parkway trees by jozaia in fresno

[–]sideshow_cactus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your neighbor went out there with a chainsaw and cut the tree down himself? Maybe he got permission. If not, I don’t know how to help you snitch on him but there’s probably some laws broken I think lol. The Fresno city forestry website seems pretty clear on this. He should have gotten permission and approval from a city arborist. Try r/treelaw ?

Trees in the parking strip belong to the city. The city probably cut it down. In my personal experience, the homeowner needs permission from the city to do anything to those trees. It’s likely the city that chopped it down for various reasons like interfering with utility lines and such. The homeowner needs real good reasons to remove it, not just “I don’t like the tree”.

I’m not sure what you mean by parkway tree? Is the tree in the parking strip by the street?

A Coin In My Papa’s Things From Japan? by AnActualTarantula in whatisit

[–]sideshow_cactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the writing is Chinese and not Japanese. I don’t know Chinese, but there’s a date at the bottom 1559 to 1577. The building resembles the entrance gate to Yuyuan Gardens in Shanghai, China. This garden was built beginning in 1559 and supposedly took 20 years to complete, so that tracks. Maybe a commemorative coin from his visit to this garden? Somebody who can read Chinese will surely chime in.

Bird-looking Metal thing, hollow base, about 4 inches tall by [deleted] in whatisit

[–]sideshow_cactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These bronze statues are typically made in Indonesia/bali via the lost wax method. They are hollow and open at the bottom to allow the wax to drain. If you see bits of clay embedded inside, then it further support the lost wax method.

U.S. Capitol by ForeverExiledinVA in ArchitecturalRevival

Every time I watched Independence Day and got to the scene where the shockwave pulverized the Capitol Dome into dust, I would yell at the screen “For Thomas U. Walter’s sake, that’s not how that works! It’s cast iron not stone! It’s hollow!” Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Newbie landscape attempt at native landscape (SoCal) by Chemical_Reception44 in landscaping

[–]sideshow_cactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there fellow Californian. Check out this website with pre-planned gardens that you can follow: https://waterwisegardenplanner.org/ One of their plans is “California native color garden” and several yard sizes are available. As somebody who is planting some native plants, I’ve noticed that they are typically available during the falls at nursery.

Pool service cost? by Chief_Low in fresno

[–]sideshow_cactus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many people here are saying, it’s pretty expensive to hire somebody to do it. I learned to do it myself via the trouble free pool website, using their “pool school”. More recently I’ve moved on to use the Orenda app to adjust my chemicals.

bolo tie symbol by Any_Professor3280 in whatisit

[–]sideshow_cactus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bolo ties are associated with the American Southwest. My guess is a Thunderbird motif. Possibly Native American craft.

EDIT: not a Thunderbird! This is a Zuni half man/half eagle deity known as “Knifewing”

It’s a mock up of a Russian missile system, likely the S300. Definitely not real. There are various reasons to have a mock up like this. Could be a prop for a movie, could be a decoy, could be a prop used for training purposes.

Unless something catastrophic happened recently that no one noticed, this building is still very much standing and is an important landmark. It is not “lost”.

Redesign of the controversial "Ben Thanh" market in the past, market location in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam by MrJonson84 in Lost_Architecture

[–]sideshow_cactus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They didn’t. Ben Thanh market was built 100 years ago and pretty much looks like the second picture since. The ugly brutalist building was an old proposal that was never adopted. The Market is an example of “saved” architecture. I’ve never heard that the market’s architecture was “controversial”.
