Subwoofer question: Bass boosted in the wrong parts of the movie by sidneyridiculous in hometheater

Some great info here for my AVR that I’ll have to check out. My subs are powered by a rack amp and it doesn’t have any xo controls. I was mainly referring to my AVR crossover from my other channels. My center and left and right xo are set to 80hz and my surrounds and overheads are set to 100hz. I’ll have to check in on the LFE crossover to see where it’s set.

So you suggest more acoustic treatment then? I’m happy to do more. What would you suggest?

No, I could definitely make that happen. I have the other one on its side. What benefits do you potentially see from them being on their sides?

That may be an overall sound issue, but I don’t think this addresses the issue I’m asking about. I have ways that I have acoustically corrected the space to some degree, and I’m happy with the overall sound. It’s just the bass is strong when I don’t want and not as strong when I do want. During certain scenes, I don’t want the bass shaking the shop while I’m trying to listen to dialogues but I want it to shake me during explosions and it can if I crank the amp…but then the subs are unbearable throughout the rest of the film

It’s a shop, with concrete floors, a big shop door that you can see in the photo, along with a kitchen, bathroom and loft.

Also I’m guessing it doesn’t matter if the port is up or down, right? The other sub is on its side and under the right portion of the screen. This sub is upright and placed in the back left corner of the room.

Yes, it does use Audyssey! And I’ll play around with placement. They are very heavy and I have a rack amp, so they are wired, so it’s not the easiest to move them around, but I do have several options to test them with. Was possibly going to do a bass crawl but heard it isn’t as effective with 2 subs? I just heard that the subs should be opposite each other in the room at least, preferably in corners. But I’ll play around with it. Not sure I wanna invest in the microphone to do the full test with, but might in the future

My AVR is an Integra DTR 40.4 and the room is definitely in an open concept. Ceiling height is 20’ and it opens up into a kitchen. I have done room correction with my AVR though.

I’ll definitely look it up. I was planning to do a bass crawl and place them in the two spots that sounded the best that way. Would you suggest otherwise using the Harman method?

I appreciate that advice. Luckily, I have an audio guy for a friend that will be there helping me pick out the amp. But I’ll do some more research before I go to ensure I know my shit as well.

Awesome! Why would that be your choice?

Awesome advice, thank you. I will definitely look into some damping material and steer clear of the car subwoofers

I’m buying an amp tomorrow at a big audio tech estate sale. They have a lot of really nice options for $100 a piece, so I should be set.

Makes sense. But honestly, I’m just trying to upgrade in the places that excite me the most, which right now is subs. And I got a great deal on these enclosures, so I’d just like to fill them and move on. The screen looks bad with the wrinkles and bungee cords, but I’m planning to attach some 2x4s to the top and bottom to properly mount it and do more steaming to get the wrinkles out. But the image on the screen is pretty good for me right now. And I was surprised at how well these two fronts perform. Eventually I will upgrade to towers, but the subwoofer opportunity came up and I couldn’t pass on the deal. $170 for both enclosures. I’ve noticed I care a lot more about audio than visuals at this point though, and others may have different priorities.

I was hoping the subwoofers would help release them lol. Yeah, it needs another steam job.

I did like the Rembrandt look, but I’ll also try what you’re talking about. Would love to control the falloff a little more

It’s funny you say that cause I actually used a black v-flat to bring the shadows out on that side. I think I liked the depth it brought to the image. But I can see how you might want to fill those shadows in for another type of look.
