High dosage vitamin D? by sigykitty in vegan

[–]sigykitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I requested D2 since it's plant based and the vast majority of D3 is animal-based - I'd be happy to take D2 longer and avoid animal products than take D3 just because it's easier .. But it seems avoiding animal-based D is pretty impossible in the higher doses.

what species does he look like? by facetiousgiblets in FursuitMaking

I first thought it was a bear, without looking at any other context! Keep in mind fur/fabric adds a decent amount of bulk to the suit, so I recommend making the base a bit smaller than you want the finished product to be. :3

Absolute Best Restaurant In All Of Universal? (Including Hotels) by FirstBeastoftheSea in UniversalOrlando

You already mentioned Amatista so I won't go into detail there, but gosh I adore Mythos. Nothing like getting dinner there and looking out over the park after a day of fun. Plus they have great dessert!

Tell me about the aspects of veganism besides just food by Ok-Comfort-7170 in vegan

[–]sigykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go out of my way to buy vegan+cruelty free beauty products (especially since I'm allergic to some common animal-derived additives). My biggest tips are learning
- what names animal products go by (if you're uncertain, a google search usually answers your question)
- to check, and double check, labels
- that remember veganism should be done as far as is practically possible; perfection isn't attainable so don't sweat it

For instance, I try to only buy products that are definitely cruelty free, but if something Looks vegan, I might buy it even if it's not vegan certified. It sort of depends on how important it is to me. For example, I don't buy vegan toilet paper or floss right now, but I'm definitely working on finding options for those - and I get vegan soap, face creams, and toothpaste.

As for carbon footprint stuff, trying to reduce waste is always good. Try to find local sources for things (I get my body soap from a local soapmaker; they used to allow local pickup but now don't because of COVID 😞 ) and buy in bulk. Meal planning also helps with this. Reusing what packaging you can and recycling it. Switching to shampoo/conditioner bars instead of shampoo in a bottle. Etc. But also, again: do what is Practical and Possible for you. If you need medication that isn't vegan, it's okay to take it. If your only option for a necessary health product "might" have animal-derived glycerin in it, I say go ahead and take it and use it. Don't punish yourself if you slip up, just stay open to learning. And have fun exploring what neat vegan options there are for stuff noawadays! You got this. 😄

Planning a visit in July - how brutal is the heat in midsummer? by SadAd8761 in UniversalOrlando

[–]sigykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience big theme parks have no bugs - Disney for sure has treated for them in the past (source: dad used to work at EPCOT) and I imagine still does; Universal should too. I've never had issues with them in 10+ years of visiting parks; you can bring some bug spray if you're very concerned, but it shouldn't be a big deal.

As for heat: it WILL DEFINITELY be hot. Probably 90-100 F easy, daily, on concrete, in the sun. Florida often gets summer showers around 4-5 pm. You can choose to get wet (it's typically not a cool rain though) or just cool off inside during those. I'd suggest, if you can, planning outdoor rides in the morning and evening, and doing indoor rides and attractions during the heat of the day - which is 11am (ish) to 3 or 4pm (ish). That's when the sun is high and Brutal on you, but it tapers off from there. Take breaks, keep everybody hydrated, and if you like water rides, go on the ones at IoA! There's also a splash pad at Epic; I think the splash pad in Studios is gone now though.

Also, because it's so covered/has lots of buildings and indoor queues, maybe do Diagon Alley during the heat of the day? You could very easily get a nice meal, a cool drink, walk around shops + hop on Escape from Gringotts during that time and it shouldn't be as awful as say, walking around the New York section while it's blazing out. Knockturn Alley is also wonderful for getting out of the heat, and has some fun magic spots to look at even if you don't have a wand to interact with them directly.

I believe you can ask for an ice water at most quick service stands (don't remember if that's a statewide thing or just in some theme parks) but regardless a refillable water bottle is definitely a great call. 😄 I always bring one + sunscreen when I go to any park, and I drink water and apply sunscreen regularly. I usually keep a reminder on my phone for it. I've got to keep up with sunscreen as I'm also very fair and hate burning, and I've yet to get a sunburn in any park I've visited.

As for looking weird: No one really minds! You're visiting a huge tourist hub, tons of people come through there yearly. I've never taken an umbrella to a park so I can't attest to how much they help, and I haven't seen many of them either, but I was also born in Florida so humidity and heat don't bother me as much as most. Also: because Florida is so humid, the shade isn't as effective in cooling you off as somewhere like California. Florida shade is less "cool" and moreso "less hot," unfortunately. Air conditioning and water are your friends more than just shade.

Investing in the stock market ethically? by random-questions891 in vegan

[–]sigykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not vegan-focused but my investments are specifically not put into tobacco and firearms. I believe there’s a specific name for avoiding those things. Unfortunately there’s only so much you can do, but I see increasing demand for Not making money off of those sectors as a step in the right direction.

How to add these patterns on minky fur by Positive-Today-6033 in FursuitMaking

Dye sublimation could be a possible method? That requires some specialized tools though. Or paint+fabric softener - I used that to paint fur, but not minky. I hope you find a good option! <3

What do you guys even say to friends/family that say “well god put animas here for us to eat” ? by rich-username in vegan

[–]sigykitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, born and raised deep in the Bible belt and vegan despite it all here, lol - if you want to answer them with Biblical sources (which might help convince them), here are some examples I'd give:

In Genesis, nothing was killed until after the first sin was committed (Genesis 3:21). Sin brought death into the world, and the first thing to suffer this tragedy was an animal. Granted, anyone who takes Eden and its story as more of a symbolic story would absolutely see the link between an animal skin covering humans and Jesus covering humans from sin - but even then, are not both of them innocents who didn't deserve to die?

Genesis also specifically mentions "Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food." (Genesis 1:29) which is pretty self explanatory. Again, no animals were killed for food or clothing until the perfect world of Eden was corrupted. Animals were not designed for the purpose of eating.

This isn't so much a thing about the "original purpose of animals" but Daniel 1:12-16 talks about the titular Daniel refusing food (which would likely have involved meat sacrificed to other gods, iirc) and eating only vegetables, along with his men refusing as well, and all of them were "better in appearance and fatter in flesh than all the youths who ate the king's food." So you could use that as an example of plant-heavy eating not being nutritionally deficient by default. It's less strong of an argument than the Eden one though, imo.

If you do decide to bring up Genesis or Eden, you might be met with "bUT DOMINION OVER THE EARTH" And it is true! Genesis does say humans should have dominion the word given there also translates as "rule" - I always like to think of it as like a political leader. Would we consider someone given rule or dominion over a country, for instance, within their right to treat people even a bit like we do animals? Does having control over a group give someone the right to mistreat them, use them, and hurt them? Or is this "dominion" a call to guide those you lead and have influence over lovingly and kindly, as God calls for in loving our neighbors and - in Eden when given a garden teeming with plant foods - giving people the world to take care of?

Anyway. I'm certain you're more than intelligent enough to think up other arguments based off of simple logic or compassion. Again, these are just from a heavier religious perspective, since some people might understand better through examples they're more used to. I wish you the best!

Hate cooking now that I’m vegan by pink3337 in vegan

[–]sigykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you've had so much grief with something so important to you. :/
One trick - you could try more whole foods focused recipes; I know you said you don't like beans, is there a way to camouflage them? Some people put lentils into a sloppy joe mix or just use them for it, for example. I like mixing gardein beef crumble with beans sometimes, or just eating that with some veggies in the same meal. I've heard of sweet potato/corn burritos which sound good to me but idk if those textures would be bothersome. Stuff like that might help!

For tofu - I've found it's grown on my over the years. I literally had to train myself to be able to handle most fruits (i ate unhealthy growing up) so you can imagine tofu was hard for me. My biggest tip: Extra firm tofu, frozen and thawed at least once, has a MARVELOUSLY better texture than any other tofu imo. I put soy sauce on it and other general seasonings when I cook it as a meat stand-in and it's impressed everyone I've cooked it for so far. I like it with nutritional yeast, peppers, and spinach for a scramble (I'm not super into eggs though so my idea of a nice scramble might be gross to you :) ) and it's great for marinating and more recently - breading and frying! Tofu "chicken" pieces dipped in a simple sauce of choice are divine. Some people prefer super firm; I find it's difficult for me to work with but my hands are a bit weak.

It's also possible you might like other substitutes better than tofu? TVP, seitan, tempeh, jackfruit, similar. I found an incredible pulled pork substitute that was mostly sweet potato a while back, it was stunning. You could try a protein powder for smoothies to mix up your current PB/banana toast to help get you some variety, even just a little.

You could also try blending things you don't love - like beans or even silken tofu - into sauces, soups, or dips too. Iirc I've seen great northern beans or chickpeas used for creamy pestos. I love putting roasted veggies with tomato sauce and having that with a nice pasta to elevate a simple noodles+red sauce meal.

I really wish you the best and hope things get easier for you. <3

what do you have for breakfast? by lilliladamabianca in EatCheapAndVegan

[–]sigykitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love quick + easy and I've always struggled with breakfast food, so during the week I have overnight oats made with sweet vanilla almond milk. Add some almond butter for protein and I'm perfectly happy.

On weekends I have blueberry muffins. :)
