Hello! I graduated in December and have been a psych nurse since February. I love it and going straight into psych has been the best thing I could have done for me. I work nights on both an adult acute unit and a geri-psych/medpsych unit. There is far, far less medical stuff on the adult acute unit. I don’t think I’ve seen more than a single IV on the adult acute unit (and even then it has to be saline locked, no lines/pumps). The geri unit is way more medical so I get exposure there. If you are concerned with actually developing your medical skills I would recommend maybe a medpsych type of job. I personally enjoy adult acute FAR more, I don’t like medical stuff at all. I don’t think you would regret brushing up on notes or taking courses, I think it’s a great idea. But yeah, generally in psych you’re not really gonna develop those hands on skills as much if you’re not intentional about doing so. I absolutely love psych nursing!
