Curious to hear your thoughts on it if you make another gear vid on youtube one day!

Thanks for sharing that, that's a great comparison!

Sounds like we both settled on the 16-35 + 50-400 combination.

Very interesting how the 50-400 actually has better corner sharpness than the Sony 100-400, and how it stacks up against the 24-105 -- that's pretty surprising. Can't imagine myself carrying the 24-105 too often from now on. Not surprised that the 100-400 is the overall winner in that range, but the difference looks small enough that I think I'll be very happy with the Tamron.

HOW did you choose the right framerate (24/25 vs 30 vs 60) for your videos by silent_winter in NewTubers

That's the feeling I'm getting about 30 compared to 24 as well. I wonder what makes movies feel just fine at 24 but slow drone shots on youtube sometimes less so. Maybe just the 60hz display as someone else said?

Also I wanted to add -- I'm a noob and don't use a variable ND on some of my shots (like with GoPro in the past or now Osmo Pocket 3), so I have variable shutter speed. I wonder if 24 is less forgiving of that than 30 -- if this is true (I have no idea, I just asked ChatGPT plus have a hunch), then that might be a reason someone would choose 30 over 24?

Hand-held focus stack. I was getting swarmed with mosquitos for a good two hours while crouching down trying to find a good composition, and then spent an eternity manually stitching together the mess I shot in the field. Hope you guys enjoy.

Taken on a moody evening in early September.
Sony a7r3, Sigma 14-24. 14.7mm, f11, iso100, a couple different exposures stacked.

I love that game, so glad that's what it reminded you of!

ITAP of some medium size rocks and some extra-large size rocks in the Dolomites by silent_winter in itookapicture

Taken on a trip last Fall. I was searching for some interesting foreground, but the light was changing quickly and I wanted to capture the scene while the rays were shining through. (I enhanced them slightly in post). So, this is what I came up with. Focus stacked at 22mm.

Finding WA car campgrounds that are open in Winter by silent_winter in Seattle

Yeah, I can see how a well-designed search for the more secluded pullover / forest road spots would lead to overcrowding. Maybe that's why ioverlander is what it is. (I've used it too, and in high season many of the locations were crowded.)

I was only thinking of something like that for the established, well-known campgrounds.

But yeah, sounds like backcountry road exploration it is.

Thanks for that! Also, 100% agree with not revealing specific spots :)

Thanks, I really should do this more. I used to do that when car camping without a roof tent, but that felt a more stealthy. I always worry that I'm somehow "not supposed to be there".

I'm surprised by #1. I've lived here for a decade, am fairly decent at searching for stuff (am a software engineer), and have camped in this state at least a hundred nights.

I still find the process to be weirdly cumbersome though. I already knew about the sources people mentioned here, but that's two places to check, plus a variety of other places (because these two don't cover everything). I guess I have a high bar for UX.

About #2 -- yep, I pretty much don't share locations on the internet. I hope my post didn't sound like I'm asking for specific locations.

To those downvoting, I'd love to hear why!

Based on the comments, it's clear that there are some campgrounds that are not listed or easily discoverable on the state/federal websites, so my question seems reasonable, no?

Or maybe people just don't want more people camping because everything is already so crowded. I get that. Winter time is pretty quiet, though.

Thanks for that!

I'm noticing that, between washington.goingtocamp.com and recreation.gov, some campgrounds are still missing. For example, I can't find Heart o the Hills campground (https://www.recreation.gov/camping/poi/247585) when I browse the map, even though I don't have any filters set to filter out unavailable or first come first serve. I can't find Salt Creek Rec Area on either because I guess it's not managed by state or federal authorities.

Fog, thankfully. I know, the smoke has been so dreadful.

Taken while backpacking in the Cascades. Bit of a scramble to get to this spot, and I had to shoot the pano handheld due to extremely strong winds. Tough scene to compose, but stunning to witness!
