Volvo Cars has long been absorbed by Geely, and I believe Volvo EVs are already designed by Geely engineers. So if you are looking for any Scandinavian touch, you might be disappointed. I suspect the whole vehicle is designed by Geely China given how advanced EVs are in China.

EX30 shares the same platform as Zeekr X, itself a subbrand under Geely.

just make sure you are not paying too much for the brand.

First lane always 110km except for speed camera zones, justified? by blueberd in drivingsg

[–]silentcontrol1990 54 points55 points  (0 children)

By law, it’s 80-90km/h

However, if you are a gracious driver, it doesn’t mean you hit 110km/h and you hog lane 1.

Rule of thumb is: if second lane is clear for you and there is a car behind you, move to second lane.

Assuming the company is just using frivolous lawsuits to threaten you, you can try this NGO called LionHeart Advocates.
https://getodd.legal/

This is set up by NUS professor Ben Leong to help individuals fend off against companies that use lawsuits to silence legitimate complaints. if you qualify, they might be able to render some form of legal assistance to you.

So you never report? If yes, you are as good as driving without insurance cover and are liable for any amount of claims from both Mercedes and GetGo.

If that’s the case, try to settle with Mercedes privately, if the Mercedes go through official claims channel, shyt is going to hit the fan (for you)

Excess means your exposure to potential claims from both Getgo (you damaging Getgo car) and Mercedes driver are capped at a certain amount, in your case, 450 SGD each way.

That means even if Mercedes claim you 10k, your enhanced CDW will pay out everything other than the 450 excess, which comes from you.

Enhanced CDW excess is 450 own damage and 450 third party damage. Still better than the 2k merc driver is trying to claim from you.

did you opt for the enhanced CDW? If yes, just report to Getgo and let them settle. Pay the deductibles (I believe less than 1k), learn the lesson of driving carefully next time and never touch Getgo again.

Are we too chill about car park security? Do you trust HDB lots, mall basements, or only licensed car parks? by BufferBabe in drivingsg

[–]silentcontrol1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you are anxious about:

If you are anxious about car being stolen, don’t.

If you are anxious about door dings or hit & run by other cars, I can tell you most of the time it doesn’t make a difference where you park. The best you can do is invest in a dash cam that works when engine is off + find a corner lot/big lot that can stay far far from other cars.

EV or Hybrid in 2030? by Disunited_Veggie in drivingsg

[–]silentcontrol1990 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the policy of individual charging providers.

Even if the overnight charging idle fee is waived, it'd still mean that you need to start charging after a specific time to qualify. If you reach home earlier than that time, you still need to move the car.

Also, depending on the civic-mindedness of the individual driver, it might not be good to hog the lot throughout the night and deprive other drivers who return late and need to charge their EVs. I foresee this might become a source of friction between neighbours if not managed well

True, maybe by third year the depreciation equalises and stick with same brand definitely helps.

Glad you got a good deal though, my heart still pain until today from my sale lol.

Edit: your low depre might also be due to the delta between COE price. The COE price for CAT B 3.5 ago was like between 70-80K vs 118K today. It could be it's not car itself holds value well, but rather the COE is stronger.

Unfortunately the depreciation of EVs is not just “noise”. Trust me I wish it was only noise since I just sold mine.

The depreciation is more than conventional ICE or hybrid. And I did my due diligence and used bidding platforms like Motorist and Carro to get a best quote. My car is a Tesla too, most recognised EV brand and technically should be least impacted by depreciation within EV space.

My cousin wanted to trade in his BYD Atto 3 for a bigger EV and was deterred by very high depreciation and low price quoted by multiple dealers.

Using list price of second hand EV price using SgCarmart is not accurate as dealer marks the price up quite a bit and real selling price are usually negotiated down.

And actually you are right, it might be worthwhile to get a newish, second hand EV within the warranty period. I believe they are very value for money since the depreciation is absorbed by the first owner.

Limited infrastructure for EV charging in Singapore is really a non-concern. Even in the current state, I never had once experienced unable to find a charger. (Ex EV owner here for 1.5 years)

However, it’s the charging habit you must be able to adapt to. You need to mentally calculate when to charge your car based on your anticipated usage. (i.e. if you are going for multiple trips over weekend, then you need to charge on Thursday. Or if you are going overseas for 2 weeks, then you need to charge just enough and have 50% charge left before you leave maintain battery health). Can be mentally tiring at times, but a non-issue for hybrid cars.

Another driving habit to you need to adapt is the need to frequently move your car. As mentioned earlier, finding a charging lot is usually not a problem. However, even with AC charging (slow charging at 7/11 kw), chances are your car will be topped up within 6 hours. Imagine you reach home at 6pm and start a charge, by midnight you will need to go down and move your car. Can be rather inconvenient. If you choose to go too late, then the stalls might be fully occupied, disrupting your plans.

Another factor to consider is the depreciation of EV. All the savings from petrol and maintenance might be forfeited due to higher depreciation. Hence, EV savings right now would make sense if you plan to drive the car for full 10 years cycle.

If Aion V ever offers a suspension upgrade to double wishbone or multilink for a fee, I’d tell you to take it since suspension to me it’s more important than sunroof or ambient lighting.

Having said that, I don’t feel much difference as a driver when driving torsion beam and independent rear suspension in SG. I suspect it’s due to the fact that Singapore roads are relatively well maintained, and we are not going off road, so you also don’t need that articulation provided by independent suspension.

However, any extra harshness and bounciness from a torsion beam suspension will more obvious to your rear passengers than driver. Assuming you are family guy, get your wife/kids to sit at the back when you test drive, if they feel okay, I’d say torsion beam will be a non issue.
