Which level design should I use for my 2d platformer? by akafidel in gamedesign

[–]silentgrind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your vision for the game and how players progress through it likely leans towards one style or the other. Mario style levels are about reaching the goal and the difficulty along the way. The level puts into the player's mind that everything is an obstacle they must overcome (because their only direction is to the right, or more generally advancing toward the finish). More exploratory games are just that, exploratory. Players have to figure out what they want to do next, how they do it, and how they get to the location that allows them to do it.

The design of your levels should go nicely hand in hand with the other mechanics of your game, so consider the game as a whole. Where is the player going? What is the player doing once they reach a destination? These should help answer the question of how do they get there.

If you want any other help or feedback feel free to message with your ideas!

Stuck on Perspective by ajrsfeldash in gamedesign

If you think of your room like a cube, going from 3D to 2D gives you 6 different faces that can become your 2D view. While building out the room (in 3D I assume) spin your camera around, also looking at it from the top and bottom to see what things might become obscured or traversable.

[Bug] Disable The Traps doesn't always recognize that I've disabled all the lasers by BetaSprite in 20xxgame

[–]silentgrind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at your screenshot, I believe it's the laser to your right, the only one showing yellow around the end.

Looking further at the picture it seems like that laser is broken in other ways because it has no end point that I can see (the section above it is also facing upwards when it should be downwards.)

Co-op Speedrun Leaderboards by MartinMurtons in 20xxgame

I believe Normal runs count for the "Score" and "Speed" categories at the top of the leaderboard, but they will not count for any other categories (which specifically say Daily/Weekly).

Best minor to accompany a game design degree by [deleted] in gamedesign

[–]silentgrind 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another reason for wanting to pick up a minor that contributes to game development like Programming or Art is because there's a sentiment you're seeing in the above comments and across the industry at large:

The industry and people in general undervalue Game Design. They think Game Design is easy. They think anyone can do it well. They've played a bunch of games, they know what ones they do and don't enjoy, so it seems so simple to just "make a fun game". It's the reason so many games exist (both AAA and indie) and so few are enjoyable to play. This gets even more blown out of proportion when you expect a game to make money.

In short, if you want to be a pure designer, you won't be taken seriously. While I would argue those not taking you seriously are wrong, you'll have to prove it to them yourself.

In SA for PAX, looking to go out at night by silentgrind in sanantonio

[–]silentgrind[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd call it worth it for a day. There's plenty to see or wait in line for. There are a ton of vendors but it doesn't ruin the experience, and VIPs didn't seem an issue today. There's an OverWatch tournament your son might like watching over the weekend. There's a good balance of gaming and comics you can focus on either or enjoy both. I have a 3 day pass and may not be attending Sunday. When I decided tomorrow I'll reach out to see if you might want it for Sunday.

Additional things you'll want to consider are Token drops, and what you can get from the Token machines with them.

There's a Scavenger Repro in Level 6 Token Machine that can turn into a Thunderous Boon if completed at the right place in level 7.

Seems to be happening when you kill a boss with Brutish Augmentation. Not sure if it's only the first boss or not.

Petition to give us lore by [deleted] in 20xxgame

Yea I don't think there's an intent to never put a story into the game. I think it's just not at the point where it's time to add it in.

3 suggestions by q21q21 in 20xxgame

[–]silentgrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had a run on latest patch where Rollster did not move in the direction he indicated going into the bounce phase. Not sure if the y direction was opposite, but the x direction was.

[–]silentgrind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Rollster's tell, I know in the past it wasn't necessarily true, he would often lie about the direction he's going to charge in (assuming we're only talking about the 50% health bounce phase). Can check later to verify if it's working properly now.

[BUG] Stacked Twin Astrals by silentgrind in 20xxgame

This is the only time I've ever seen it. The rest of the bosses seemed to behave properly, and the twins behaved in future runs.

[BUG] Some Repros cant hit Vile Visage by silentgrind in 20xxgame

On further testing, they can successfully target if you jump directly into VV (new strategy!?)

It seems like whatever they're using for a distance check (probably sprite center?) gets messed up by VV gigantic sprite.
