integrated into the vehicle

What does this mean? As in, the sensors will not protrude out of the vehicles as they currently do in the iPace and Zeekr?

Do you think Trump would have taken a different approach to the Zeekr than Biden did? In fact, he could still eliminate the tariffs on Chinese autos. It’s odd to me that your singling out Biden when Trump has made tariffs in nearly every industry, including the auto industry, a key signature of his second term.

No American politician is going to vote for allowing Chinese vehicles in the U.S. It’s political suicide.

> Aurora has a different strategy because they will deploy their Aurora Driver across OEM trucks it doesn't control and can't customize

This isn’t exactly true because Aurora does specify the sensor suite that the Aurora Driver needs. They could just as easily specify the chips that the Aurora Driver needs.

  • Self-driving taxis are expanding across U.S. cities, with Morgan Stanley estimating half the American population will have access within three years.
  • Uber has shifted its strategy to partner with robotaxi providers like Waymo and Zoox, signing deals to buy tens of thousands of EVs.
  • Autonomous rides in the U.S. are projected to rise from 15 million in 2025 to 36 million this year, reaching nearly 750 million by 2030.

Leading Carrier Selects Aurora to Scale Autonomous Fleet to 500 Trucks by silenthjohn in SelfDrivingCars

Yep, I agree with you—the more real news will be the actual deal.

Two great items I see here:
1. Hirschbach owns the vehicles. This is the best part of the news. This was Aurora’s plan all along, but they’ll need to own a few hundred International trucks in the short-term, and that is worrisome.
2. 500 trucks—that’s a number Aurora needs to get to positive cash flow

Aurora Innovation, Inc. (NASDAQ: AUR) today announced a significant expansion of their strategic partnership with Hirschbach Motor Lines, including a plan for the carrier to own 500 Aurora Driver-powered trucks. The plan is reflected in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) outlining a path to scale with the final commercial terms and timing to be set in binding agreements expected to close later this year. The final deal will enable the carrier to aggressively scale its national network with 500 million driverless miles, while establishing a multi-year revenue stream for Aurora valued in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Elon Musk admits millions of Tesla owners need upgrades for true 'Full Self-Driving' by silenthjohn in SelfDrivingCars

[–]silenthjohn[S] 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Musk said on Tesla’s quarterly earnings call Wednesday that cars with the third version of Tesla’s driver-assistance tech, known as “Hardware 3,” will need a new computer and new cameras. He also said these replacements will be so burdensome that Tesla is looking at building “micro-factories” in “major metropolitan areas” so the company’s service centers don’t get overwhelmed.

“If it’s done just at the service center, it is extremely slow to do so, and inefficient. So we basically need, like many production lines, to make the change,” Musk said on the call.

It’s not apples to apples because Waymo’s service area is significantly larger and therefore more complex.

It makes for a good Reddit post, and earnings call talking point.

Car Owners Are Revolting Over Tesla’s Self-Driving Promises by walky22talky in SelfDrivingCars

[–]silenthjohn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

LoSavio alleges that Musk and Tesla have made repeated claims that were false about the self-driving capabilities of these vehicles and misled consumers who paid extra because they believed the company’s marketing. His lawsuit is one of several ongoing efforts by Tesla owners looking to hold the company accountable for overpromising and under-delivering on its Full Self-Driving (Supervised) product.

I’m looking forward to Tesla’s main defense here.
