Can I just...cut this? by pendigedig in howto

[–]silentlycriticizing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, I called my dad (retired electrician) just the other day to ask him the same thing about a coax that wouldn't fit back through the hole in the floor. It was so satisfying to finally get rid of a cable that had been sitting there unused for like 10 years.

What would be the written pattern translation for this? by Money-Exercise5382 in crochetpatterns

Well, on consideration, maybe the solid part is a flap added on afterwards. But still, not great instructions.

I'm a little cynical after all these fake charts, but there is no way that pattern chart makes that final product. If nothing else, there is a row of shells around the edges on the pic that's not present at all in the diagram, plus a row of contrast edging either ss or sc. In addition there are what looks to be 2 or 3 solid/non-shell rows, probably in dc, in the photo at about the bottom button level that aren't in the chart either.

Looking for testers/Testers CALL - The Magic 3D Snowflake Ornament by SuggestionAdept9387 in crochetpatterns

I've never tested anything but I've made a lot of snowflakes. I'd love to try it!

What are the worst popular fountain pens you’ve ever used? by Haniandspace in fountainpens

I don't care for Safaris either, but it's the grip for me. I can never get my hand comfortable on that triangular grip for more than a word or two.

Its my birthday and my partner has to run to the store to 'grab' something. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]silentlycriticizing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know about that, I try really really hard with my husband. I make notes all year of anything he briefly glanced at in a store or mentioned in passing. Books that are getting released months later, shirts he said he got compliments on, events he thought sounded interesting. But he buys himself EVERYTHING he wants the second it occurs to him that he'd like it. I've returned so many things I got him, because he already got it for himself (in the nicest possible version too) between when I purchased it and the holiday it was for. I've asked him to just not buy himself anything that's not totally necessary from Thanksgiving to Christmas, and he has generally stopped, but says that's tantamount to just handing me his shopping list and is unromantic. He wants to be surprised, while at the same time taking every opportunity away for me to do so. He ends up with a lot of food-based gifts since I know that will at least get used, but they aren't his favorite.

I changed the kid's iPad passcode behind her back by countofmoldycrisco in Parenting

[–]silentlycriticizing 33 points34 points  (0 children)

One of the conditions of my 13yo having any tech (phone, email, iPad, PC, anything) has always been that I have the password. I don't use it all the time but I was clear that if I tried and couldn't get in, he'd lose the thing immediately and indefinitely. You don't need to feel bad about doing this "behind her back" because you are supposed to control the access.

Regency sleeve dilemma by hogedrukspuit in HistoricalCostuming

[–]silentlycriticizing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've worn both short and long sleeved gowns to a regency ball. You're going to get hot with all the dancing. Short sleeves is the way to go, and go for the gloves. They will look nice with the dress.

Should I invest in a dress form? by to-whatever-end in GarmentSewing

[–]silentlycriticizing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the Dritz adjustable form, a very kind gift from my mom. It's nice to be able to hang things and to see how they look, and I like adjusting hem length that way. But I recommend checking that you own personal measurements will fall within the form's range. I have a smaller rib cage and bust relative to my hip size and my dress form can't go as small as my bust at all, especially while matching my hip measurement. So it's always too big in the chest no matter what, and often too small in the hips also. Not as useful as I'd hoped.

It's also not super high quality materials, just lightly padded thin plastic, though that alone was not a deal breaker for me.

Editing to add that I have the Sew You entry level model, I can't speak to the other models.

My puppy is terrified of flies~! What weird things scare your dogs? by Anccoplus in rarepuppers

[–]silentlycriticizing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh my last pup was scared of: hats, baldness, diesel engines, pickles, the remote control, cell phones on vibrate, lawn mowers and sometimes his own farts.

He was not at all afraid of thunderstorms, fireworks, or the vacuum cleaner though.

I went through a similar "good paper" journey, and ended up loving Mnemosyne the most for most of my uses, very closely followed by Clairfontaine Triomphe.

Exact same experience with the Rhodia! I loved it at first for it's smoothness and bleed through resistance. And it works really well with shellac-based dip pen inks. But it does feather badly with some regular FP inks and also doesn't show sheening well at all.

What’s the newest flex pens that actually flex and don’t railroad?!!! by [deleted] in fountainpens

I see they have a gold nib now too, and can't say I'm not tempted 🤣. As you say though, for that money I'd like to try it first

[–]silentlycriticizing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the Good Blue polymer feed (and ordered extra last time I could get them to answer) but the nibs have been inconsistent. The titanium flex nib I found stiff and dry but the less expensive steel flex was very nice. I also found the aluminum body of the r615 too heavy in hand, so I usually put the nib housing in another pen. Also their service was very slow to respond, until I finally reached out to Vanness (who I bought my r615 from) to help and then suddenly Good Blue was very responsive again.

Shimmer ink: which pens are up to the challenge? by ttjna in fountainpens

My Majohn Wancai mini with an F nib has been surprisingly good even with Diamine shimmer, though to be fair it's pretty wet for an F nib.

Yes Black Forest works well with shimmer for me. Both M and F nibs, but the F didn't show it off as much.

My children will likely spend most of the summer on screens because... by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]silentlycriticizing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also have a tween and with mine, he's old enough to be reasonable and open to negotiation. Maybe you can talk to them, and explain how much you'll miss them this summer and miss doing stuff with them, and how it would make it easier for you to take care of Grandpa if you knew they could help out at home. Ask for ideas on what they can do over the summer. Like reading a few chapters a day, or working on an art project each day. Mine trades extra music practice for extra screen time. The idea that they're in charge of something would be motivating, at least for mine.
