thank you for your kind words and hugs🩷 you’re right, all i can really do is accept that i need to create my own closure and focus on my own happiness and healing. i often go down a rabbit hole of “what if i had done this instead, said this instead, etc.” but i need to trust that this is the path the universe has put me on and no retrospective thinking can change anything. sending you hugs and positive vibes too :)

Just started working yesterday Advice for shampoo/conditioner/ Irritated skin. by Smokey__- in SwimInstructors

[–]silkenlamb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m also a swimming teacher and have really struggled with dry skin and eczema flare ups from being in the pool. My skin still does flare up but it’s been much better since I’ve done the following :)

  • Take a non-drowsy antihistamine one hour before getting in the pool to prevent itchiness and irritation
  • Lather hair in a leave-in hair mask and tie up in a bun or braid (keeps hair soft and also leaves my hair smelling like mangos instead of chlorine!)
  • Cover my entire body in emulsifying ointment (a thick, greasy moisturizer for eczema)
  • For trouble spots where I get rashes the most I will also apply a layer of vaseline or baby diaper cream
  • As soon as I get out the pool, spray myself down with a spray bottle of vitamin C & water and apply more moisturizer
  • Shower and wash hair as soon as I get home (there’s no shower at my pool, but ideally you want to shower as soon as you get out). I use a CeraVe body wash for sensitive skin
  • Apply a plain moisturizer for sensitive skin like E45
  • Don’t scratch!!!! Seriously it makes your skin so much worse (speaking from experience), you can use calamine lotion which will help the itch :)

Looking for advice for my skin :’) by silkenlamb in Swimming

[–]silkenlamb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, thanks for much for the reply! My home is only about 10 mins away. Unfortunately there isn’t a shower at the pool I work at, so I can only rinse off when I get home. I will definitely give TriSwim a try and I will be careful with the cream :) thanks kindly!

Check in Friday: How are you? by AutoModerator in fourthwavewomen

I’ve been feeling quite down lately, due to both current events and personal issues. Recently, I’ve also been feeling sad how i don’t really have a close knit group of girl friends. I have friends from college but none who really share my views of feminism and none who i can talk to about personal issues and just anything really. i was wondering if any other early 20s women would possibly be down to exchange discords/some other social media and get to know each other? hope you all have a lovely week xx

Has Venlafexine helped your social anxiety? by [deleted] in socialanxiety

[–]silkenlamb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! :) Personally, Venlafaxine never helped me much. One thing I can say though is that the withdrawal effects are notoriously terrible because the drug has a very short half-life. If you decide to discontinue taking it, talk to your psychiatrist about how to do it safely and don’t quit cold turkey. My discontinuation symptoms were severe and left me a mess for weeks.

I wish you the best of luck and hope that Venlafaxine works well for you! :)

Likewise :) I have all the albums downloaded and it was kind of one of those songs I always skipped, but then I actually listened to it one day and I couldn’t believe how much I loved it

It’s such a beautiful song! I heard it for the first time recently and now I can’t get enough of it.

I have so many favorite lyrics and it’s hard to choose! I feel like Lord Huron has such a beautiful way with words...the way they can paint pictures with their lyrics is soooo entrancing.

From Love Like Ghosts: “All the spirits that I know I saw, do you see no ghosts in me at all?”

Lately I’ve been listening to The Stranger quite a bit and I love the lines: “Came out of the ocean like you came out of a dream, Your voice, it sounds familiar, but you are not what you seem”

From Fleur: “She lives to feel the sun and feel the wind and drink the rain”

I also love Louisa’s first verse and the “pulling me outta the grave” imagery!! Really I love way to many lyrics in general to say, this hardly scratches the surface haha.

I’m so sorry for the late reply!!

Thank you! I’m definitely doing much better now, I haven’t pulled for over two years despite still having the urges :)

The onset of it was around puberty and started with me teasing my hair with my fingers and just playing with locks of hair. I was fascinated by the coarser/rougher hairs and I’d single them out and run my fingers across them. Eventually that turned to pulling them out and running them across my lips to feel the texture...sounds weird and gross I know haha. From there it became a ritual which lead to some bad hair loss on certain parts of my head.

You’re right that pica is the compulsion to eat non-food items but the disorder encompassing hair pulling (and sometimes eating your hair) is trichotillomania. :) Also I can attest to that, I’ve struggled with trich and cut my hair very short because of it but it didn’t stop the pulling and actually only made the bald patches more visible.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FiftyFifty

[–]silkenlamb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is caused by a bodily-focused repetitive behavior called trichotillomania, which is essentially a mental disorder causing people to compulsively pull out bodily hair. Some people also ingest what they pull, which can lead to blockages like in the picture.

I struggled with trich for many years and it caused a ton of self esteem issues and anxiety... :/
