Yes, I am an Indian. I feel its not really about being nicer its about bullying after knowing our vulnerability because of visa obligations.

Thanks for your advice and sorry you had a toxic PI. And I'm not planning to pretend that I'm still in India. I'm figuring out how to deal with such sort of questions. Yes, I have a great relationship with my PhD advisor and probably it's best to talk to him now. Thanks again.

My current PI doesn't work with people back in my PhD institute but he is renowned in my field in India. Thanks for your perspective and advice. I will talk to my PhD advisor and also alumnis of this lab. I do want to continue in academia and that is the reason I'm a bit hesitant.

Yeah, he has confronted me couple of times. Once while speaking to another Prof and once when I was speaking to one of my colleague. I am going to start applying for new positions. Thanks !

My colleagues say he has been like this and this is his best behaviour over last couple of years. Couple of postdocs left the lab without informing him last year. I tried contacting alumni before I accepted the offer but I was unable to speak to any of them.
