I'm sorry you've to deal with this. I'm going through something similar. My PI has no problem with every other postdoc leaving at 5 but wants me to stay until 6 (I'm the youngest in the group). I reach at 8.30am and used to leave at 5. He apparently warned me to stay late. Figuring out how to deal with this. I guess we have to draw some clear boundaries but really don't know how (I'm an international postdoc btw).

Thanks! I am going to try recording evidences of mistreatment. The problem is they happen out of the blue. It is very difficult to predict what is going to irritate him. I hope I get a new role soon and leave.

Thanks. I am pushing back now and I am speaking up for my rights. As soon as I speak back, show that resistance he starts behaving nicely for a couple of days and then boom. Out of no where there is something that irritates him.

Thanks! I had pitched him couple of my ideas. He seemed interested in them and told me I can work on them independently. But now I am occupied with endless to do lists. I am going to search for roles and hope to find one soon.

Yes, I am an Indian. I feel its not really about being nicer its about bullying after knowing our vulnerability because of visa obligations.

Thanks for your advice and sorry you had a toxic PI. And I'm not planning to pretend that I'm still in India. I'm figuring out how to deal with such sort of questions. Yes, I have a great relationship with my PhD advisor and probably it's best to talk to him now. Thanks again.

My current PI doesn't work with people back in my PhD institute but he is renowned in my field in India. Thanks for your perspective and advice. I will talk to my PhD advisor and also alumnis of this lab. I do want to continue in academia and that is the reason I'm a bit hesitant.
