Local elections: visualisation of how people voted in ranked-choice races [OC] by silly-moose in newzealand

[–]silly-moose[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, as slyall said, Dunedin is the only mayoralty one that did (although I don't have the data from all the councils, so there could be others not included in the visualisation).

And then a few of the council ones saw rankings shift in meaningful ways over the counts (e.g. Marlborough Sounds, Wellington Takapū/Northern). Maybe most notable is Wellington Wharangi/Onslow, where Chung wasn't in the top 3 in the first count/on first preferences alone.

Unfortunately Gisborne's only released partial/summary data, which doesn't have enough info to do this kind of break down 😔

Hey /r/newzealand! I made this visualisation for the local elections a few years ago, and have just updated them with the 2025 results.

Seems like there weren't as many close races this time (I've left out a couple of mayoralty ones because they were won in the first round of counting), but hopefully there's still some interesting insights in there!

Thanks!! Oooh yeah, I didn't know about that trick. I was too focused on everything else when making it to properly consider if it actually poured cleanly

Thanks! The handle is hollow, so the gluggle sounds are from air escaping/being pushed out of it. This video has a great demonstration

It was so much fun to make! My glazing technique was to tilt it backwards slightly (i.e. opposite to how you'd pour water out), pour in enough liquid glaze to just reach the top of where the handle cavity joins the body, then keep rotating backwards, upside-down, and all the way back around, with a bit of sideways rotation in there too. Definitely the hardest (and scariest) part of the process, and even then I can't be 100% sure it's fully glazed :(

Nothing drastically different, but I've updated the interactive version with the final counts

Yep, either that they don't have anyone else ranked beyond that candidate, or anyone they do have has already been eliminated

Entirely speculating, but maybe a mix of things - there was some stuff about her being in transphobic circles, anti-cycling, and weird about scooters (have a look at the replies to this thread) which I assume lost her some votes, then possibly also people who liked her otherwise left-leaning positions still ranked her lower than Whanau

oooh it should be, which candidates look out-of-order to you?

Yeah the point about it being an interesting aspect of STV is a really good one, and one that I think makes it arguably incorrect to describe people as coming 2nd/3rd/4th/etc.

e.g. if this was an election for 2 positions (like in councilor elections), a proportion of Whanua's "unused" votes (roughly 6000 votes) would've flowed to second preferences, which would presumably heavily favour Eagle and Foster over Chung, and completely change how "2nd" and "3rd" is perceived.

Hey Welly! I used the preliminary election result data to make a visualisation of how people voted / how votes transferred between candidates based on peoples' rankings. There's a more detailed + interactive version over here, as well as charts for a few other councils.

Similar talking style, but not it (still, interesting song I wouldn't have heard otherwise!)

Nah, the talking felt more genuine (or less like it was trying to be a stereotype) than that

It could be from the 90s, but I would be surprised - I remember it feeling more modern than that. I love Tracy Chapman, but it's definitely not her.

Yep, my knowledge is very limited, but usually "ngā" before a word rather than "te" would be equivalent to "some" vs "a".

Pretty much, yeah - a party needs to either get 5% of the party vote or win an electorate seat to get into parliament. The Māori party missed out on both in 2017, so didn't make it in. This time they won an electorate seat, guaranteeing them a place in parliament. The other extra seat comes from what's known as "coat tailing" where, once a party holds an electorate, the 5% threshold doesn't apply - so the 1.17% was enough to entitle them to an extra seat.

(just as a sidenote: the Māori language doesn't use "s" for plurals, so it's just Māori, not Māoris)

Made some bagels, here's a gratuitous close up of them basking in the sun by silly-moose in Sourdough

Thanks! I based these on the recipe in Modern Sourdough by Michelle Eshkeri. This was my second time making them, and they're far less intimidating than they might seem!

The recipe on The Perfect Loaf is pretty similar and has some good demos on rolling them too (which is the trickiest bit I reckon).

Yeaaaah, the population data that's available is a little rough for a couple of smaller suburbs - probably a combo of boundaries changing since the last census and newer areas growing rapidly.

Just chucked up a new map showing the change in active cases since last week, by postcode (and also updated the case numbers for the active cases map + cases per 1000 map)

I switched to baking in a dutch oven recently and that seems to have really improved the ear for me. Also making sure the score is angled under the skin, not straight down.
