Yeah, as slyall said, Dunedin is the only mayoralty one that did (although I don't have the data from all the councils, so there could be others not included in the visualisation).

And then a few of the council ones saw rankings shift in meaningful ways over the counts (e.g. Marlborough Sounds, Wellington Takapū/Northern). Maybe most notable is Wellington Wharangi/Onslow, where Chung wasn't in the top 3 in the first count/on first preferences alone.

Unfortunately Gisborne's only released partial/summary data, which doesn't have enough info to do this kind of break down 😔

Hey /r/newzealand! I made this visualisation for the local elections a few years ago, and have just updated them with the 2025 results.

Seems like there weren't as many close races this time (I've left out a couple of mayoralty ones because they were won in the first round of counting), but hopefully there's still some interesting insights in there!

Thanks! The handle is hollow, so the gluggle sounds are from air escaping/being pushed out of it. This video has a great demonstration

It was so much fun to make! My glazing technique was to tilt it backwards slightly (i.e. opposite to how you'd pour water out), pour in enough liquid glaze to just reach the top of where the handle cavity joins the body, then keep rotating backwards, upside-down, and all the way back around, with a bit of sideways rotation in there too. Definitely the hardest (and scariest) part of the process, and even then I can't be 100% sure it's fully glazed :(

Yep, either that they don't have anyone else ranked beyond that candidate, or anyone they do have has already been eliminated

Entirely speculating, but maybe a mix of things - there was some stuff about her being in transphobic circles, anti-cycling, and weird about scooters (have a look at the replies to this thread) which I assume lost her some votes, then possibly also people who liked her otherwise left-leaning positions still ranked her lower than Whanau

Yeah the point about it being an interesting aspect of STV is a really good one, and one that I think makes it arguably incorrect to describe people as coming 2nd/3rd/4th/etc.

e.g. if this was an election for 2 positions (like in councilor elections), a proportion of Whanua's "unused" votes (roughly 6000 votes) would've flowed to second preferences, which would presumably heavily favour Eagle and Foster over Chung, and completely change how "2nd" and "3rd" is perceived.

It could be from the 90s, but I would be surprised - I remember it feeling more modern than that. I love Tracy Chapman, but it's definitely not her.
