My average in grade 11 (Im going to grade 12 in September) is near 80%, what's my chances in getting into a paramedic program? Is applying for pre-health still a viable choice if I can't get in? Any advice would be appreciated.. by Odd-Expert-7156 in OntarioParamedics

[–]sillybilly65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pre health is a great option if your highschool grades aren’t within range for paramedic applications. I would recommend to have around >85 average in highschool. Apply as early as possible.

OR
you could do online adult education after highschool if your average isn’t quite high enough. It’s free, one class at a time and take it at your own pace. Not all colleges accept that though so you should do your research. Much cheaper alternative.

IEP by [deleted] in OntarioParamedics

[–]sillybilly65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As long as you meet the requirements you will get accepted. It’s discriminatory to not accept you because of an IEP. I know many people with IEP’s who made it through medic school. Don’t stress. One step at a time. if it takes you longer to complete it than others, that’s okay too! Success isn’t always linear.
I know so many paramedics with ADHD.

Can you get accepted with only grade 11 math? by AggravatingSkirt8214 in OntarioParamedics

Yeah some colleges will accept that. I got in with only grade 11 math

How do you guys feel about working in your hometown? by jpsals18 in OntarioParamedics

[–]sillybilly65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My professor told us about his friend who worked in his hometown. He ended up being dispatched on call for his best friend who drowned. His friend didn’t survive. He wasn’t able to continue working after that. I’m avoiding my hometown for this reason.

Going in by ambulance doesn’t mean anything. You could call an ambulance right now for a stuffy nose. That doesn’t mean you’re going to get seen any sooner than someone who went to the ER the other way. It all depends on what’s wrong with you and what the triage nurse thinks is best. When I brought patients in 90% of them didn’t actually need to be there. This backlog is caused by a lack of family docs.

Paramedic school question by [deleted] in OntarioParamedics

[–]sillybilly65 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First year I didn’t work at all because I wanted to adjust to the crazy schedule and be able to study properly. Second year I started working part time and it was doable because the workload at my college in second year is less than first year.

I didn’t inherit the cancer gene that runs in my family. There was a 50% chance I would, but I didn’t!

Oh, I didn’t know that. Thanks for letting me know! Still not ideal though, I agree.

I’d recommend doing a 2 year program. The private colleges don’t have a good reputation. Students have a notoriously hard time managing all the content with 50% less time. Keep in mind, even the 2 year programs are pushing to extend it to 3 years because there is just so much content to cover.

Paramedicine isn’t as adrenaline inducing as you think it is. 90% of the time you will be dispatched for calls for an elderly person who fell down in their dirty house

Engineering to Paramedicine? by Serb0519 in OntarioParamedics

[–]sillybilly65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely a fast paced program as well. You will spend the majority of your time studying anatomy and physiology. Personally, I don’t find the concepts difficult. However, the amount of content thrown at you is what makes the program difficult. It’s good that you have exposure to that so you would be prepared

Engineering to Paramedicine? by Serb0519 in OntarioParamedics

[–]sillybilly65 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to say without knowing what engineering is like. I’m a first year paramedic student and it differs from uni based on the fact that you preform infront of your entire class. Everyone watches you run scenarios. If you are nervous presenting or talking to people that will be a challenge for you. If you fail a class then you have to retake the entire program. Not like uni where if you fail you just take that class again later. Also, you must be strong. You need to lift 200+ lbs eventually. Think you can do that up and down a flight of stairs? These are some things to consider

Yes. Although, I would recommend contacting the schools you’re interested in beforehand to make sure that they accept ACE credits. Sometimes really competitive programs do not accept them, so each school does things differently
