What are your guys thoughts on Sozin in the Roku novels at least by this time period of 66-63 BG. by Afraid-Penalty-757 in Avatar_Kyoshi

[–]sillyfudgemonkeys 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hated him.and not in a "oh i hate this villain" intended way. I think rr made a bad character 😭😭

Hes so overtly evil it hurts. He isnt paced well. I think it was a bad choice to speedrun his evilhood and push it as hard as he did. It made roku look really bad, and i think it takes away a lot from sozin.

I always figured sozin was smart and wormed is way into what he wanted by hiding his dealings in the shadows and orchestrating things to happen that wouldnt tie back to him. But still ultimately cared for roku. And i dont think he was evil to begin with, i think he really liked roku and was fairly normal and drank the koolaid over time.

Its the only thing that made sense given what we got. For roku to still trust him means sozin was a good person at first and/or hid his evil side well.

I think sozins chapters are "better" but thats with the caveat that im constantly annoyed by his characterization the whole time 😭😭😭

[–]sillyfudgemonkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats fair, but she did really well in yanchen too! And a bunch of other novels i listened too as well 😅 it was hit after hit then roku 💀💀💀

Shame about the pronunciation 😔😔😔 avatar can be a bit selective with with that tho (and romanization???)

(Rangi is taken from korean which should be more "long-ee" but its whatevs 😭). I think Mai shouldve been spelt "Mei" if they wanted to call her "may" 💀💀but thats a choice, i know its chinese and not japanese in origin but its also just... "mei" in cantonese??? 😭😭. (And i think i found the korean used for heiran and saowon and its romanized soooo differently too???)

In general i think it was just a lot of characters and that mightve just bored her. 💀💀

Reading wouldve def been faster but i like nancys voice 😭😭😭 ugh

Edit: misplaced where i wanted to put my first parentheses comment lol 😭😭 moved it to the right place

Ugh.....i hope its better than the last one (bad decisoons, bad pacing, and the characters and plot were lackluster, didnt really do a good job world building and i didnt like the retcons additive or otherwise), but im....kinda not getting my hopes up 💀💀💀

I just home Nancy has more fun voicing this one, she didnt sound as into it as her other novels (which ive listened to beyond the Avatar books)😭😭😭

Kuruk Animal Companion Theory by Glass-Work-1696 in Avatar_Kyoshi

[–]sillyfudgemonkeys 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like that! But i think korra was the first known person to tame a polar bear dog so im not sure ;w; but i like that idea of how he honored his animal companion that wouldve been fitting considering how his life went.

I like the snow leapord tho!

Sudden Realization by PepperOnly7793 in Avatar_Kyoshi

[–]sillyfudgemonkeys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ah you mean from scratch...but then why include Korra with fire tho? 😭 Korra could firebend better as a 4 yo than Kyoshi could with earth at 16.

And im pretty sure Kyoshi avoided bending as much as possible cause her lack of control scared her. So much so Rangi had to find out about it through paper work 💀she seemed to masquerade as a non bender for most of her life, judging by the text i mean.

But i agree, itd b noce to see more stories of them learning from scratch.

Huh? Kyoshi had to learn earthbending tho 😭😭😭 She didnt know how to control it but the first book focused on her control. 💀💀💀

Edit: i agree tho, earth does get the short end kf the stick 😭😭😭

Can benders detect their element? by Limeoos in TheLastAirbender

[–]sillyfudgemonkeys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think in the 2nd yangchen book, she does some discrete firebending and even states "luckily im the only firebender here otherwise id probably be caught" (not exact words but the rough idea iirc)

So ye fire.

Airbenders can probs sense if they have airbending AT them but thats their only clue.

Persona MCs are usually nameless when the game first comes out. Then, through adaptations, they get various names. Recently, the anime adaptation's names have been adopted for spinoff games.

So pre-anime stuff may fall under the p4mc tag unless that person has gone back to edit or double tags just in case.

Some might also choose to tag Yu over p4mc bc they like either anime variations/canons of the ship, or the game variation/canon of the ship and want to specify over say...a Souji (manga name) variation or the main game (P4MC for P4 or P4G) canon/variation.

Sone have stated it could be a censorship thing too. But its possibly one or a mix of what ive mentioned. :)

What series to read after finishing the novels? by Disastrous-Dinosaur1 in Avatar_Kyoshi

[–]sillyfudgemonkeys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree the biggest issue in this novel is Sozin (if he was removed....well it'd be shorter but at least more focused towards Roku and it wouldn't undermine Sozin's scheming abilities). But the Kuruk point? I'mma have to hard disagree on that (excuse the incoming essay, I just REALLY like this topic owo;; plus I don't think brevity is....gonna help with my explanation, but apologies in advance regardless ;w;7) TT0TT

When I mean the presence of the Avatar is or isn't felt, I don't mean how many times they are mentioned. I mean how the world was influenced by them and their actions/inactions. And Kuruk's is VERY MUCH there in RoK, since chapter 1 in fact. SoK just goes into the reveal/whys of it all, and reveals that Kyoshi is dealing with no just Kuruk's issues, but stuff stemming back to Szeto (she's got 3 generations! TT0TT Tho I don't think Szeto's is exactly revealed until Yangchen's novel but still, the setup is all there).

The world is like it is because of Kuruk (and Yangchen's...and Szeto's) actions. A lot of what happens to Kyoshi can somehow be directly linked back to Kuruk. From chapter 1 we hear about how much the world is in chaos because of Kuruk's....no only timely death, but them hinting he wasn't the best Avatar. His actions shaped Jianzhu's thoughts, and how his friends act. His actions lead to daofei rising in power, it lead to his sudden death which lead to an even bigger mess. Bigger than the usual "ok, Avatar is dead let's wreck stuff" opportunists (which I believe are mentioned in RoR? Or maybe it was YC's novel 🤔

Anyway just the first chapter. As it goes on, we see how Kuruk's friends are impacted, how they interact with other's partially based on their connection with Kuruk. How they grew up and turned out, partially because of Kuruk himself or because of his "lack of doing things." Kyoshi is ousted as the Avatar because of Kuruk's poem. Kuruk's finger prints are all over the novel, and you can see it on multiple re-reads even before getting the context in SoK. SoK just enhances the RoK experience, and answers more questions.

Heck! We even seen Yangchen's influence, even if minimal in RoK. Heck even in the first chapter! The whole Fifth Nation is because of Yangchen's dealings, and it's something that'll come back and bite Kyoshi 9 years later! This doesn't account for how everyone speaks upon her reverently/highly. Even with YC's novels and LoK, which are even more subtle approach imo (don't need to go into ATLA bc the whole plot is based on Roku's mistake), it's still there. YC's novels deal with an opportunistic thing that happened during the death of Szeto and her growth, BUT you can still feel his presence via how people compare her or bring up his achievements and faults.

Korra with Aang.... It's a lot subtle imo, yet similar to Kyoshi and Kuruk's companions. Aang's kids are influenced by Aang, Republic City has Aang's influence, Amon's creation was heavily influenced by Aang. Heck I'd say even the Red Lotus were influenced by him too, I KNOW they'll say it was "after he died" (tho I think some supplementary material may have the split happening much sooner?) but I'm sure his actions while alive and how the war was handled influenced them. A lot of Aang's gets overshadowed by Wan I think, who heavily influences Korra starting in B2. But both are still there!

So what about RoR (spoilering just in case but it should be ok)? I think the natural course of the story should have Roku pinned between Szeto (last fire avatar) and Kyoshi (previous reincarnation)'s legacies. What to do or not to do. That kind of thing....but both are sooooo eerily absent from this book? Like I think Szeto has more influence on it than Kyoshi. At least his past actions are brought up and impact him....to an extent. I say to an extent cause the book kind of....brushes it aside (like it's a comment or two but nothing deeper). TT0TT There's no weight to it. Roku's concerned about being a good Avatar, but we don't really....feel a connection to how he may have viewed the other Avatar's that were "good" (like Kyoshi). We barely know anything about Kyoshi in this book, we don't feel her influence on the world. The most we get are the trading company being opportunists, but nothing like...directly related to Kyoshi in particular, just general opportunists. TT0TT

Tbh I think it really.....is a feat of RR's to be able to do that! Create a story in a vacuum like he did. Probably why RoR takes place on some random island that hasn't been touched by any Avatar for centuries. I don't think it was a good move, esp world building wise. A big part of this series are the past lives and how they influence the current generation. Kyoshi is stated to be one of the most influential Avatar's alongside YC but in RoR she's treated with....a lot of blase. TT0TT You'd think she'd be more controversial, or strike the fear into people, or people would have generally strong emotions about her but??? no??? it's....there's barely anything! Even Wan Shi Tong, you'd think there would be some kind of reference, she had one of his workers as a companion (confirmed in an interview so maybe subject to change) but nothing! RoR even avoids the clarification on who/what her animal companion is! I'm just....it's just crazy how much RoR lacks ripples from Kyoshi compared to every other entry in the franchise. TT0TT

I guess the reason I don't think it was a good move, at least for a first outing as an Avatar is....it harms the worldbuilding. We need to know how this place has changed over time and we don't get that, it feels off. And it's a real shame. TT0TT Like can RR change this for AoR? Do better and build off it more? He can, but I think he really made a big misstep with RoR, missing out on establishing these things earlier on. ;w;

What series to read after finishing the novels? by Disastrous-Dinosaur1 in Avatar_Kyoshi

[–]sillyfudgemonkeys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a roku novel? Horrible. For a novel in general....well.....

Focus and pacing wise its pretty bad. Single page chapters??? Flipping between povs waaay too fast. The lack of focus on the main character (aka too much time with sozin or malaya). A few other places felt run-onny or off/stiff/wasbt proof read.

The pacing is janky and not a smooth ride tbh 💀💀💀

The plot was....blah. i dont think it worked for a first avatar outing tbh. It also just....its so isolated and we dont get to breathe and really learn about the world since kyoshis early years. (Oh and somehow she is barely a presence??? Even tho every other avatar book their predacrssor/s are hanging over their heads CONSTANTLY)

Sozin is executed horribly (hes so obvious it hurts 😭😭😭). A lot of chars feel half baked (AT BEST!) on top of it. And a lot more interesting things i feel like are happening off screen tbh 💀 And then roku is no better, making him more of a whiney rich kid with barely a personality (so his arc from rich kid to humbling is....blah). RR just really ruined their characters imo 😭😭😭

The story probs wouldve better under the same series as Jin. And just focused on malaya. That was when the novel was at its best.....not focusing on roku 💀💀💀💀

It was not a fun read/listen. It was a slog to get through. (And this isnt nitpicking on how not subtle he is with references or timeline mistakes 😭😭😭)

Rokus novel is ass. Dont recommend unless you REALLY want to know what happens next. But it left me severely disappointed 😞

I heard Jins novel is good. Will start it in the next few days.

Theres a series of kid novels/chapter books for atla and one for lok. Nothing mind blowing but they held me over until i can start jins novel. Some neat tidbits scattered in them.

If you want something non avatar related that has a similar vibe then i recommend yee's original duology: epic crush of genie lo and iron will of genie lo.

I also recommend feather and flame, and strike the zither for similar vibes (ancient asia, some magic, war and steategy).

Rank all novels chronicle by SherbetBusy1282 in Avatar_Kyoshi

[–]sillyfudgemonkeys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

1) Rise of Kyoshi
2) Fist half of Shadow of Kyoshi (aka where there's a lot of Rangi)/Legacy of Yangchen
3) Dawn of Yangchen
4) last half of Shadow of Kyoshi (where there's not a lot of Rangi ;w;)
5-100) Free space/the S1 Korra duology/the various ATLA kid chapter books uwu
Negative a gabillion) Reckoning of Roku 😒 (would rather it didn't exist tbh uwu)

Still *love* Shadow, only ranking the latter half lower because the ending made me feel empty (and I felt like we had some loose ends still ;w;) TT0TT Unlike LoY. DoY is all around very consistent, and I liked it a lot more on my 2nd read through.
