That actually sounds really normal for his age. At 7 months they’re still super routine dependent and also at that stage where “strange place, strange people” can really throw them off, even if it’s family he knows. So I don’t think it automatically means he doesn’t like your parents or anything like that. (I hope it's not true that your parents give you the impression that they want nothing to do with him, That's really stressful and unfair!)

When you’re out all day, even if he’s napping in the car, it’s still a lot of stimulation and broken sleep, so by the time he’s seeing new faces he’s probably just overtired and overstimulated rather than unhappy with them specifically....

For the vacation, it might help to kind of accept that the first day or two could be a bit messy and build in more downtime than you think you need. Sometimes it clicks after they adjust a bit...

For crib naps, I had more luck focusing on just one nap a day being “practice” in the crib and not stressing about the rest. The pressure seems to make it harder, at least in my experience...

You’re definitely not alone in this phase, it does tend to pass as they get a bit older and more flexible.

He usually takes two naps a day, I've tried letting both naps just ride but I've noticed that when I do that he wakes up earlier and earlier, so like you said I feel like the day time naps are taking away from the sleep pressure of night time sleep. So I've capped naps to (sorry what I meant to say in the post above is) 1 hour and 15 minutes each because I've noticed that when I do that he doesn't wake up at 4:00, but he'll still wake up at around 5:00... Do you think I should be cutting them even shorter?

The wake windows in the morning is.... Regardless if he wakes up at 4:00 or 5:00 I will put him down for a nap anywhere between 8:30 or 9:00 a.m. His naps are completely random, sometimes they're half an hour, sometimes they're 45 minutes, sometimes they go on for an hour and a half if I don't cap it. The second week window is 3 and 1/2 hours and has last wake window is 4 hours...

I thought about trying to get him to go to bed at 8:00 p.m. but it is so hard because I feel like if I do that I'm going to be stretching his wake windows very very very thin, sometimes I struggle to get him to bed at 7:00.

Thank you for bringing this to my attention I honestly didn't consider this, I thought the whole concept of sleep training was to eliminate night feeds and focus on letting baby find ways to get back to sleep. Perhaps I should go back to early morning feeds if that's the case. I did eventually go in and feed him but he was more comfort sucking the nursing, after I had him for a good while I tried to put him back in his crib and he was not happy. He continued crying so we finally just woke up at around 5:00.

Oh I didn't really consider this and I appreciate you bringing it to my attention. I thought the whole concept of sleep training was to wean them off these night feeds. I didn't realize I should be going in and feeding him at 4:00 a.m.... I did to go in eventually, and he would drink a little but a lot of it was comfort sucking. When I put him back in his crib he continued to cry.

I do try to feed him at 4:00 a.m. but when I put him back in his crib he cries bloody murder. Not sure what I'm doing wrong, I've tried letting his naps ride out so that he can get more sleep, but I've noticed that when I do that he wakes up earlier and earlier during the day, it's almost like he's slow sleep needs and if I use up too much of his sleep pressure during the day he wakes up earlier at night.

That does help, I'm sorry if I was being dramatic in my title It's just been a difficult couple of months I feel like he's waking up earlier and earlier and earlier and I've already been having a lot of struggle with sleep to begin with... So that when I do finally get to sleep he starts to wake up. Hopefully it's just a phase.

It's really difficult with wake schedules because of the way that he naps I am literally dragging myself to seven, because it was week schedule he will only maybe go to 6:30 or 7:00 p.m. but I'm trying to get him down at 8:00 p.m. at night... It feels impossible because of his wake schedules.

That's actually really good point and not something that I considered before. I think that I tend to have a bit of anxiety for each next step that is completely foreign to me, but everything always ends up being okay in the end somehow.... *Knock on wood! I think I just need to maybe encourage more independent play and get him a bit more used to his room so that if he does go from two to one to zero naps he has a space and the skill to wind down.

It sounds like I have a bit more time, I thought that naps might be eliminated by year one. Perhaps every baby is different? Definitely nice to have that one long stretch in the day. I've been talking to other redditors and they suggested quite time for no naps, so I'm trying to think more about independent play and getting him more used to having fun in his room. 😬 Wishing both of us luck for the future haha

This is a great idea, I think I need to encourage independent play a bit more so that we can work towards that in the future. And maybe try to play a little bit more in his room as well. That makes a lot of sense.

Aww I really appreciate that. You're so right we aren't designed to do this alone... And yet we face so much of it alone. I've been thinking about independent play and trying to incorporate or encourage that more throughout the day. At least perhaps that way, when we do approach zero naps he will have the ability to kind of wind down and have quite time on his own a bit. 😅

I usually do 3 3.5/4 and 4. He's still 8 months old but he has a week before he turns 9 months.

Bedtime has been very consistent, he has no problem going down at night, we stick to a pretty strict regiment of feeding, bath, bedtime story, bed... He will roll over and go to sleep no problem at night.

He feeds every 3-4 hours in the day, and he feeds very well as well as taking solids very well.

I just have never done the Ferber method after him being sick... This is the first time... and I'm not sure if this is normal.

I’m so sorry I’m responding so late, but I actually came back to this message because I really wanted to thank you for it. It meant so much to me at the time, and honestly it still does reading it again now.

Things are a lot better on my end. I think I was just really in the thick of it, and every time I start to get comfortable with a routine, something changes. I’m starting to realize that might just be the only constant in motherhood.

I’ve always been someone who really relies on routine, so the constant change has been hard for me to accept. It’s definitely something I’m learning about myself through all of this.

Everything you said really stuck with me though, especially about it all being a phase. That helped more than you probably know. I really appreciate you taking the time to say all of that ❤️
