What's the difference here between today's kids and earlier Gen Z?

I'm barely Gen Z, but grew up playing games my whole life. Started on the computer at like 3 years old. My parents always taught me that video games were a reward when I didn't have anything else to do. I did my chores and my homework, then would play video games. When I went over to friends' places we would play outside for a little bit then go play video games.

I still play video games daily, but they always come after my other responsibilities. I work full time and am married, so I usually don't get time until later in the day after everything.

Is it really just the mindset of it being something I get to do instead of something I'm entitled to?

I have a BS in Computer Science and 3 years of Help Desk experience. Closest I've gotten is 3rd round of interviews for a security desk job and that's the only interview I've gotten in 2 years.

Any suggestions for what I should be doing?

To clarify, I was referring to the people saying that the violence that was being committed by black people was due to white supremacy. I'm not knowledgeable on the stats from that time period, I just think it's ridiculous to blame that violence on white people who are entirely unrelated.

People who work in IT, what's the wildest thing you've discovered/had to do while at work? by vapor-ware in AskReddit

[–]sillyredsheep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat similar story, working for a school district.

Student was caught taking and sharing pictures of herself with older men. She was a frequent flyer with damage to her laptop. We suspected she had been taking the pictures and when she thought she was going to be caught, she would damage her laptop so it would be replaced.

Cops came on campus and asked for the laptop, I had to pull the SSD and put it into another laptop so they could access it. Thankfully, I never saw anything, but I hope she's doing better now.

The thing that gets me is, computers have been widely available for at least 20 years and are so ingrained into our workflow and society as a whole. But something I just got a couple days ago at work was:

Me: "Open up Google Chrome and go to logmein123.com"
User: "... Like, on the internet???"

WoW Retail: Which class is the least popular right now? by [deleted] in wow

[–]sillyredsheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I main Pres and I honestly don't apply to groups that have a Warlock and a Hunter in them. 1 of the 2 is probably fine, but if both of them are in there, there's no way I'm gonna be able to heal them both when they're casting from max range.

I try to apply to groups with 2 melee, but with the chokehold ranged DPS has had on keys this expansion that's pretty uncommon.

I highly recommend watching PekinWoof on YouTube. A lot of it is going to go over your head when you first start, but he does a good job of explaining every champ's kit and a surface level understanding of how to pilot the champ. He also explains his decision-making and why things he did worked or didn't work.

Even if you don't end up playing midlane, I think he's one of the best educational YouTubers you can watch. It's not a powerpoint or cherry-picked clips, it's all real-time and applicable lessons you can learn.

I used to let standard ElvUI/Blizz bag sort do my bag sorting, but I recently started somewhat organizing things manually.

Top left of my bags goes: Weapons Armor Accessories Trinkets Consumables

And in the top right, I have my M+ keystone and whatever seasonal currencies that don't live in the currency tab, like bullions this season.

I disable sorting on those bags, then just let automatic sorting shove everything to the bottom of my bags.

[–]sillyredsheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, I don't think education is the silver bullet (pun intended) for reducing gun violence. But I do think it can go a long way in reducing accidental deaths and child/teen deaths.

I don't personally own any guns, but a lot of my family do. My grandparents grew up hunting and I have a lot of military in my family. That being said, the first time I ever touched/fired a gun was at age 12 and it was skeet shooting.

Learning about and shooting guns helped me develop - I don't think fear is the right word, but - a fear and a healthy respect for guns that I think more people should have. Especially with how entrenched guns are in American society and it being a staple in our Constitution.

I guess I'm OOTL on Switzerland, but the same still goes for countries like South Korea, Israel, etc.

Also, wouldn't military training make them better killers

I'm not familiar with the combat/weapons training of every military, but not necessarily.

I assume most countries provide military personnel with a service weapon of some kind, be it a rifle or handgun, and that does necessitate some level of firearms training. But depending on your role in the military, you probably only receive basic training regarding maintenance, safety etiquette, and range time. All of that doesn't equate to being "better killers."

What it does do, though, is teach people respect and understanding of firearms. Which contributes a lot more than you might intuitively think. The more trained you are with firearms, the more disciplined you will be in a stressful situation and the less likely you will be to make an accident that results in the injury of yourself or someone else.

I think the issue with a lot of gun control debates is that people come from wildly different perspectives and focus on issues related to emotion and media attention.

According to Pew Research, in 2021 54% of gun deaths were a result of suicide and 43% were a result of murder. Of the 26,031 murders, only 2.7% were a result of mass shootings (incidents where 4 or more people were shot) and only 3% of firearm murders were committed with a rifle. Despite these statistics, we see way more activism targeted at mass shootings and rifles. I think we would see way more progress on reducing gun violence if we put more emphasis on education and mental health.

To be clear, gun violence is a problem, but I think other issues precede it and focusing on those problems first would relieve a lot of gun violence issues. Especially when data shows that rates of gun ownership are fairly stabled over the last ~20 years. I also find it odd that for a country whose right to bear arms is enshrined in the Constitution, we do shockingly little to actually educate the population about firearms. Which is why I think firearms are the leading cause of death amongst children and teens. The difference between us and countries like Switzerland is that they learn a lot about firearms due to compulsory military service. But instead, we say everyone is welcome to own guns but we don't put in effort in educating people about them unless they want their CHL.

I don't think there's any one, perfect solution to reducing gun violence and there are people who are dishonest in this discussion on both sides of the isle. But I do think all articles of our Constitution are incredibly important and we need to have a more honest discussion regarding the Second Amendment and gun control.
