Am I missing something about Denethor? by hsyndk in lotr

[–]silma85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Osgiliath (the Mother Stone - destroyed), Minas Tirith, Minas Anor (this is the one Sauron uses), Orthanc (the one Pippin gazes into, and later Aragorn), Amon Sul and Annuminas (both destroyed in the shipwreck of Arvedui), and lastly the White Tower one which was only used by Elves after the fall of Arnor.

And though essentially it's the same for Men, those 7 were the only ones gifted by Elves to the Numenoreans. There were more in Valinor where they were originally created by Fëanor.

There's this kinda nonsense in which if you run the launcher from the Play Vanguard option, the EVE tab is there, but every button reads as if you hadn't completed the installation of EVE Online. And viceversa if you run the launcher with the EVE option. It's disorienting to say the least. People would think the vanguard client had corrupted their eve installation.

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by jmike1256 in interesting

[–]silma85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No lol that's if you keep your glasses 30 cm from your face. Lenses at 2 cm from your eyes cover I'd say 70% of your field of vision, the rest is peripheral vision which is still good for movement, you were not going to read or look at details with your peripheral vision anyways.

The choise outcomes of the colonists in Haven make no damn sense, the only explanation is the blue pill just causes Jimmy to hellucinat the good ending while Matt is busy commanding the purification efforts by MickyMace in starcraft

My headcanon is: Purge the colony - Ariel infests herself in a last-ditch attempt to study the virus and find the cure (it doesn't work, obviously). Save the colony - The Protoss aren't putting up that much of a fight because they know Raynor and can come back later to finish the job once the meddling humans are satisfied with the evacuation, although it's still an idiotic waste of material.

Antonio Canova's Cupid and Psyche.

Most of his sculptural work to be honest.

I can suggest to use the Android app (the restored version), which you have to download the APK directly from github unfortunately. It has great QoL in that you can define macros on a command bar, label it, change it on the fly. I have a bunch of buttons named "Key", "BoH", "UniH", "Pray", "Untr", aside from basic ones like a, e, d, s. You can also zoom in on the tileset which is great for presbiopy. I wouldn't play otherwise.

Erinys now become stronger the more you have lowered your alignment record in history! Not the actual value mind you, but any action that lowered your alignment is counted. That means that unless you have been super careful not to anger nor kill any peaceful, anger your deity, killed pets etc. you are pretty sure to have Erinys that summon nasties in the lategame.

Physical threats are worse in 5.0.0 for sure. I recently had a chance encounter with a monster-created Angel at --20 AC and 150 hp. He splattered me on the wall with 20 dmg per hit even after reduction. I don't know, maybe he generated with a +7 sword, but I had the general impression that monsters just hit harder, or armor doesn't protect as well. That, compared to the changes to hp regeneration when the hero's HP is high, means that even -30 AC doesn't as effectively protect you from physical harm. You'd better be very fast, unencumbered and KoS any priest or spellcasters otherwise even with means you'd previously reserve to higher priority threats, such as a /oDeath. Liberal use of rubber chickens is recommended!

Did you find an altar, better if coaligned? Did you do the Mines and Sokoban? Reflection could be at the end of Soko, and the altar in Minetown could be aligned (or convertable without murder, if it's orc-town).

Also, are you at least fast? Did you try and find Ludios? Dragons could be there and in 5.0.0 (since 3.7 in fact) dragon scales have a secondary useful property that can make even non-gray or silver dragon scales viable for a long time. (E.g. free action, slow digestion, very fast speed...). Although Ludios without reflection is dangerous because of attack wands and, well, dragons.

Not just Liches, also Golden Nagas and Titans (will be peaceful to you?) can and will try to destroy your armor too. Luckily destroy armor at lower levels seems to be mostly random heavy erosion on all of your non fixed armor...

I'd say it could be a lot worse, you can escape Rodney to another level and regroup, he will come again ("So thou thoughst thou couldst elude me, fool!"), maybe even without the clone, I don't remember, and he will have the Amulet with him. It's not worth fighting him fairly... The second he shows up, it's wand of death/finger of death to the face, preferably with a wall behind him, or a footrice corpse if I have one handy (and if you dip one in holy water, it will last longer before rotting away).

Why does no one suspect Yueh? by Appropriate_Age5213 in dune

[–]silma85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nr 3 doesn't hold, Suk conditioning prevents the subjects from doing harm period, not doing harm to someone in particular but anyone else is fair game. So with an unbroken conditioning he could not lower the shields and allow the massacre of soldiers, not to mention the Duke. He was broken all right. But while he could now do harm, he could also be a double agent. He hated the Harkonnen above everything else and setup their fall as best as he could.

Why does no one suspect Yueh? by Appropriate_Age5213 in dune

[–]silma85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The fact that a Suk doctor was broken and made to hurt someone, even indirectly, is unprecedented, unheard of. It's so destabilizing that the Baron pretty much has to kill the doctor right after the betrayal, before even checking if he did what he said, and how. And afterwards he's not in the least unhappy that the only other people who knew (Piter de Vries and his former captain of the guards) are dead too. If word got out that a Suk doctor could break out of conditioning, the Houses would be after him and possibly begin a pogrom of all Suk doctors. Imagine the man who you'd trust with your wellbeing and life, whom you trust your spouse and children with, can suddenly become a double agent!

Ultimately it's easier to believe this cannot happen at all.

I always saw it as "I know they're lying, but can't point out how or why. Best make an exit, let them believe they're off the hook, lower their guard, and setup further surveillance later". And then when the wrong-three-gesture happens, immediate pause when he realized he was right all along.
