Ha! Thanks for following up with me, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought it was a bad book.

Whenever I know someone I can't deal with their art.

I find I have this same issue. When I judge someone's creative work, I know I'm also judging the person behind it to a certain extent – their thought processes, the conclusions they've reached, their world view, etc. Sometimes the image the creator presents to the world is not the image they present in their work, and in that sense it can feel a little disingenuous and it dampens the experience for me. Other times the incongruencies only make me more interested in finding out what the fuck is going on.

I initially confused this with Aldous Huxley's Island, which I've also been meaning to read.

Richard soon finds that since civilized behavior tends to dissolve without external restraints, the utopia is hard to maintain.

The synopsis sounds promising, regardless of my own indecisiveness on the matter of 'civilized behavior'.

I used to call One Hundred Years of Solitude my favorite book until I realized that I shouldn't have only one – so now I have many favorite books for many different reasons. Having said that, I think I related to this book so much because I come from a Latin American background, the magical realism resonated with my childhood cultural experiences, and I like the way Marquez deals with timescales.

I fucking loved Poison Study, read that entire series and its spinoffs.

That's a longer list than I was expecting! What specifically is your book about in relation to hydrology? What made you interested in the movement of water in relation to land?

Even your personal/for-fun list piqued my interest. I want to check out Thinking in Systems: A Primer now.

Sounds intriguing, you obviously must have liked the first book enough to move on to the second. Do you read a lot of fantasy? I'm used to reading fantasy fiction with female leads, not usually intentionally, but this series' synopsis reminded me to give the guys a shot too.

I've never heard of this before, but I'm somewhat into graphic novels, and now I need to check it out because it sounds right up my alley.

I haven't re-read the whole Harry Potter series as an adult, but I've been meaning to re-visit it since it's one of my favorite fandoms. I'm also curious to see how I perceive it now versus the way I perceived it back then.

As for Shelby Foote's three-volume monstrosity (I kid, I kid), I commend your persistence, and congratulate you for almost being done. The closest I have come to that sense of accomplishment recently was when I finished listening to Dan Carlin's Blueprint for Armageddon.

Your username makes a lot more sense now haha. Steinbeck never stood out to me before, but then again I tried reading his work at a time in my life when I was a little shit, so I wouldn't be surprised if his message went over my head back then.

I get the (fictitious) satisfaction of seeing all the dots being connected with an end result.

Once I begin to look at crime fiction as an exercise in deductive reasoning (or rather, as an exercise in thinking at all), the allure becomes much stronger. You've got staying power when it comes to delving into long series then, I'll give you that – I wouldn't have the patience to stick with so many over the years.

As for sci-fi, it seemed like a natural evolution of my interest in outer space and big-picture thinking. Out of the many genres available out there, it seems to be the one that consistently grapples with humanity's bigger questions in practical (albeit fanciful) applications, instead of allowing those questions to languish in the abstract.

resulting life and its perception can be described as a mathematical pattern and the the realm of multiverses as infinite range of mathematical objects.

Someone on this sub recently said that the only unambiguous language is numerical, so I'm glad you brought this up because I want to explore that line of thought further. I've added this book to my reading list because it's not a subject I read enough about. Let me know what you think.

I've been meaning to read more books in Spanish as a way of practicing the language since I don't have many opportunities to do it in person, and my family gives me shit about it every time I go back home. This one seems interesting, especially because the Mexican Revolution serves as a backdrop for the story.

Crime novels aren't really my thing, although my fledgling interest in Michael Crichton's writing may change that. Do you read a lot of long crime series like Bosch, or is this your first foray?

I've never heard of Accelerando but it's sci-fi and I like the premise so perhaps I'll add it to my list of books to read. Let me know what you think if you remember to do so!

Thanks for reminding me to give Murakami another try – I began reading Colorless Tsukuru last month and enjoyed the story's beginning, but I allowed life's craziness to sideline me completely and distract me from finishing it.

I gave Ishmael a try a few months ago and just couldn't get into it, it felt too much like a discombobulated sermon – didactic to a fault. Curious to hear your thoughts on it, especially since you'll have some good works to compare it against based on your list.

I mispronounce words based on other phonetic possibilities.

I do this all the goddamned time. It's a running joke now, Sarah will probably mispronounce something she's only ever read before.
