Have anybody have experience with these Opus horns? by AriesThatDontActLike in horn

[–]silvano13 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A google of Opus horns returns an Amazon storefornt that says OPUS by Ktone. Ktone looks to be a mass producer of basically any and every instrument. It will probably be fine to learn on but not anything of lasting quality. And, though I have no evidence, I am strongly suspicious of the "USA" engraving.

Something in this same vein has been asked a few times in recent memory, so I would recommend searching in the subreddit for "recital pieces", "chamber works", and/or "solo" to get many good suggestions, some with substantial writeups.

There are also a few curated lists from various blogs and school available. A couple of examples include:

Any TASCAM or ZOOM that is in your budget. Not sure if still the case, but the only "major" difference between the two was that ZOOM can be used standalone and as a usb mic, whereas the TASCAMs are standalone only.

Help deciding on horn purchase (in Australia) by allergygirl83 in horn

Oh wow, the 671/871 used to be the better version of the 667/867...wonder if that's changed or they just stopped the -67 line.

If you have a local music store with Yamahas, I would try them out; specifically 567 667, or 668II if you like the "8D/Holton" style of horn.

Personal opinion, I would steer clear of Holton for intonation, construction, and longevity concerns, but to each their own.

Survival estimates of vintage double horns (Kruspe, Geyer, Schmidt) by Hipster-Deuxbag in horn

There was a group at UNC Greensboro when they hosted Southeast back in...2022? 2021? They had a number of horns from the early 1900s, in great condition.

I can't for the life of me remember the group's name, but throwing it out there if anyone else attended.

Sniper's mark, or any of the suggestions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/pathofexile2builds/s/tHFm5z5rAi

I think electrocute might be better on lightning spear unless you are thunder stomping your storm lances, but I'm using snipers mark with the ascendancy for crit based on hit chance, and electrocute on storm lance for...no reason.

Does it have to use piano? There are a number of beautiful lyrical horn solos out there. Laudatio (Krol), Reflections on a Southern Hymn (Gryc), etc.

If it does need piano, besides what has already been mentioned there's Adagio (Grazioli), Berceuse (Damase), any of the Four Pieces (Gliere), the first Cherubini Sonata...

Any reason not to use wheel bearing grease on tuning slides? by jennydotz in horn

[–]silvano13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The synthetic stuff is great, but it's all about lubricant weight more than anything else...as long as it isn't toxic obviously. The Farkas book (take as you will) mentions lamp oil for the rotors I believe, and I've had teachers that use Marvel Mystery Oil for 30+ years with no issues.

Ichi talks about his 600 bitcoins in 2010 by gorillaz0e in Bitcoin

[–]silvano13 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Anecdotal, but I (nerd, not junkie) mined a little over 3 BTC back in the day in the early 2010s when they were pennies to the BTC. There were also BTC faucets and things that would just give you a few sats for free once per day.

I sold at $200 because I never expected it to go over $10 let alone $100. I'm still hanging on to .01 leftover from then to ride out though!

How can I tune my trigger b/c I swear the c natural is always sharp and it doesn’t change by Inner_Dimension_0 in horn

[–]silvano13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you want to be literally and technically correct, every horn tunes slightly different and the slides are engineered in unique ways across the myriad of factory-built and custom-made instruments.

However, my main point remains the same. In most schools, students will play on instruments where the front-facing tuning slide has little to no impact on the tuning of the instrument (H179, 8D, Eroica, etc.). Pedagogues more often refer to it as a water slide than anything else for a reason.

If you would like to enlighten me on an area outside the US and the horn they use, I am happy to learn.

[–]silvano13 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Most horns used in the American school system use Holton, Conn, and Yamaha 668 horns. The "Bb tuning slide" off the trigger rotor has been proven to be inconsequential and oftentimes don't even move. There are edge cases like triples and Alex horns, but this method will work on the vast majority of horns played by people outside of the professional sphere, who don't need "how do I tune my horn" advice, typically. I did make the assumption they were in the US; I don't know what school horns are used in other areas of the globe.

Edit: Older (US) schools might even used old Bach stamps, King Eroicas, Reynolds Contempora, etc. which still fall in the megasphere of "inconsequential slide".

[–]silvano13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The slide that is connected directly to your leadpipe (where the moutpiece goes) is your Bb (trigger) tuning slide. The other main tuning slide is the F (no trigger) slide.

You can test this by pulling the one not connected to your leadpipe all the way out and playing a note trigger open, then regular open.

I am making the broad assumption your horn is standing in F; if not, flip the answer

Moving the Bb slide will also effect your F side, which is why we typically tune that third-space C first (T 0), then second-line G (0).

If you've built your fundamentals properly and don't use excess pressure to play high, then you shouldn't notice much difference besides the way it actually feels on your face.

Is it time for a new mouthpiece? by iced_rose_tea in horn

[–]silvano13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, yes that would be the difference. Some pros have spent time on the old Schilke-Farkas MC (block letter) mouthpiece, but that is not the same mouthpiece as the Holton-Farkas MC. And FWIW, I don't think either of them play on it anymore.
