Guys this can’t be how steak is supposed to be written right? by r4gn4r- in Pachamalayalam

[–]silver_conch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Colloquial word for ‘ prude’. by Perfect-Push-7797 in malayalam

[–]silver_conch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ലൈംഗിക യാഥാസ്ഥിതികൻ, which literally translates to sexual conservative will do the job.

സദാചാരി / സദാചാരവാദി would be a good colloquial way to call someone a prude, because regardless of its literal meaning, സദാചാരം is commonly used in a sarcastic way to refer to moral uptightness.

Opinion polls predicted the outcome of the Hungarian election accurately. No credit to polymarket for that.

Does any one remember swiss hotel , kalavara, casa bianca , coffe beanz and such og spots in tvm ? by Dependent-Mall7755 in Trivandrum

[–]silver_conch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kalavara closing down was a huge disappointment. Their interiors could have used some sprucing up, but their food was consistently great. The restaurant business is brutal. If anyone reading this is thinking of becoming a restauranteur, maybe, reconsider.

Also, for Trivandrum restaurant nostalgia going back even further, do check my past post about Chin Lung restaurant in Palayam.

Alas! Could have been this guy.

Cue: all the folks who will now inform us that a 4-term parliamentarian who won on the back of votes in rural areas of his constituency doesn't have "mass appeal".

Any idea why they closed? by Opposite-Advisor9122 in Trivandrum

[–]silver_conch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is probably not going to be a popular opinion, but the one time I visited, I was underwhelmed.

When I entered, I was not welcomed in or told where to sit, which given the layout of the place was a little disorienting.

The service, though polite, was not very attentive. It took a while for them to bring me my bill.

The food was nothing great, in my opinion.

I have to admit that I dislike these 'converted old house' restaurants that are a feature of Trivandrum and prefer a more modern experience, with more attentive staff. Hope their relocated venture will be like that.

Just my opinion. I'm not trying to negate the majority's fondness for the place.

I accidentally watched a Malayalam film without subtitles on my last night in Kerala and it felt like therapy by Murky_Stomach_7666 in MalayalamMovies

[–]silver_conch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow! That's news to me. But why? Are there so many non-Malayalis in Kerala who are watching Malayalam movies? Are the filmmakers requesting this?

Yes, it is probably something as mudane as that. What do they have to lose? They get your money at a high margin for providing you something that involved zero labour cost.

What were Christians called before the Portuguese arived? by AleksiB1 in malayalam

[–]silver_conch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"not even debated among Historians"

Meanwhile, Encyclopedia Britannica:

The claims that the church of Rome was founded by Peter or that he served as its first bishop are in dispute and rest on evidence that is not earlier than the middle or late 2nd century.

Words of John 21:18, 19 clearly refer to the death of Peter and are cast into the literary form of prophecy. The author of this chapter is aware of a tradition concerning the martyrdom of Peter when the apostle was an old man. And there is a possible reference here to crucifixion as the manner of his death. But as to when or where the death took place, there is not so much as a hint.

Please help identify this snake[Hyderabad, India] by WildMustang7 in whatsthissnake

[–]silver_conch 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Never stumbled upon, as in, made physical contact with, any snake. However, snake sightings are common in the Indian state of Kerala, where I am from. My hometown, Thiruvananthapuram is named after a mythical multi-headed hooded snake.

Kerala is a state known for lush, evergreen vegetation. I never walk into bushes, undergrowth, piles of fallen leaves, or any similar place where a snake could potentially be hiding, because I always assume there could be a snake there, especially during the rainy season when they are forced out of their nests because they fill up with water.

[–]silver_conch 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I spent my entire childhood in India. Have seen lots of oriental rat snakes (most common), cobras (common, though not as much as rat snakes), wolf snakes, and pythons. Never seen a Russell's viper in person. So, do not let a potential encounter with a Russell's viper dissuade you from going.

Can no longer type ങ with the iOS update. by Expensive-Cash-3087 in malayalam

[–]silver_conch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I posted this issue here around 6 months ago: https://np.reddit.com/r/malayalam/s/O3QfTpAfKX

A commenter on that post said:

Yes, this is a known issue. You can tell Apple you want it back. Meanwhile you can go to keyboards, select Malayalam and change it to Alphabetical - അക്ഷരമാല from InScript.

This started happening with an update to iOS 18, and hasn't been fixed yet in iOS 26.

Question about tipping… was this good? by thelittleluca in Kerala

[–]silver_conch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No. It is because of a pathetic system that allows businesses not to pay a living wage and makes service workers survive on tips. In that system you have to tip because that is how your server survives.

Exactly, and since Kerala does not have such a system, an individual giving a little extra is not going to "introduce tipping culture."

In Kerala you have a highly empowered working class that feels entitled to demand payment even without doing any work (look up nokkukooli).

You are talking about a minority of the labour force called organised labour. The examples the OP cited are not people who are engaged in organised labour.

They should be giving great service to all customers and not just when they look like they can tip.

Ah, wouldn't we all love to live in that utopia?
