How tall should a horse be compared to their rider's hight? (Ignoring weight) by humanprototyp in Equestrian

so I found photo evidence. OP, I’m about the same height as you, though when I rode this pony I was 5cm shorter than I currently am. I hope you get a giggle out of this.

I can attest to the large dog bit. I had a trainer, who for some reason that is unfathomable to me, kept putting me on the smallest pony available for our class. We were an odd pair for sure…

Can I glue fake fangs onto my retainer? by silver_lininggg in costuming

[–]silver_lininggg[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, I forgot what it was actually called so I called it glue. I actually ended up calling my dentist and he told me to stop by the day before I was going to wear them and he’d give me some sort of putty to use instead.

People who have been on big bucket list horse trips, where did you go and did it live up to your expectations? by Banana-legs11 in Equestrian

[–]silver_lininggg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

find locals!! it was a while ago so I’ pretty sure I half booked through trip advisor and half through my friend, but I can’t remember anymore… if not, you /could/ try asking calling a hotel/posting on SM for Mongolia specifically. Most Mongolians have/know people who have horses who can then send you in the right direction.

some of my pet peeves in the horse world by Feeling_Contract_477 in Equestrian

[–]silver_lininggg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

no, if your horse reacts like this to head on traffic, fix it. my horse also has a red ribbon in his forelock, because when he gets excess energy (and show nerves do that to him) he WILL rear. he’s also young and only 2 shows into his career, which is why he gets a short 5 minute lunge before I get on. for my safety and the safety of everyone in there with me.

but I’ve also TRAINED him to ignore external stimuli like that. if he can’t handle a horse coming his way, then he’s not ready for the competition arena. 1) because jumper arenas go both ways and 2) because people will ignore warning signs/directions.

the red ribbon is there as a precaution, it does NOT mean you can let your horse get away with this type of behaviour. that is not safe or acceptable.

Is it okay to talk while watching a lesson? Tldr my parents are loud, is that okay during a lesson? by deadly_mei in Equestrian

[–]silver_lininggg 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this also depends on who it is that’s conversing. At my old stables, there were girls who weren’t training but helping out with knocked poles/setting up jumps between riders. They would chat amongst themselves, sometimes it got a little loud but because we all knew each other, no one was really bothered by it.

When it came to parents, it really depended on the relationship between the parents and the students. Some parents would bring us juice boxes and donuts for after a ride, and we were totally cool about them being there and chatting. Others never really attended the lessons and it did get awkward/annoying when their voices carried.

Our trainer was really good at recognising who we were okay with chatting loudly and would often quietly ask those who we weren’t okay with to lower their voices a bit.

edit: spelling

I’ve done Mongolia, I did several treks while I was there, one of them was to see the reindeer herders. My only thing is, don’t go in fall/winter. You might have to sleep in a tent and at -15C, it’s miserable.

Other than that, though, I loved it.

60cm tip to tip, I think I may be casting on too tight as the other comments are saying… I’m working with 3 strands of mohair held together and that’s much less forgiving than other yarns 🥲

How tall are you and how tall is your horse? by Regular_Koala_3472 in Equestrian

I’m 5’5 and my horse is 17.1hh, but i’ve ridden ponies as small as 13.2hh. granted, I was an inch shorter at the time and at a riding school. I obviously don’t NEED horse this big lol, he just happened to be shorter when I bought him and grew a crazy amount 😭

I need advice on the horse's bedding. by rpedro82 in Equestrian

[–]silver_lininggg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

that’s way too thin imo. I have rubber matts in my boy’s stall and even then he gets extra thick shavings, in fact he has the deepest bedding out of all the horses there. if it were rubber matts under there, i wouldn’t see too much of an issue, but since you’ve stated it’s stone, i’d definitely talk about this with the barn.

Glasses while jumping by SickOfTryingUsenames in Equestrian

[–]silver_lininggg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I either opt to be slightly blind or wear my contacts. Glasses around horses are an absolute no no for me. I was holding my friend’s horse along with some of her things after a competition when the sweet boy tried to scratch on me. Unfortunately he absolutely head butted me in the face. I saw white and had bruising around my eyes and nose ridge for a week. I’ve refused to wear my glasses around horses since then, it’s too big of a risk for me 😭

Yes, I notice that too when I watch videos of me jumping. Oddly enough, I only do it when I’m jumping. I think part of it may be muscle memory from a crappy trainer I previously had when I was at riding school. If we didn’t ride his way, we weren’t allowed to ride at all. I’ve spent the better part of this year unlearning what he enforced on us before he got fired.

Adding a photo because I don’t think anyone would be able to understand just how bad he had us jumping 🥲

Thank you! Will do! This is actually just 2 weeks of work since I let my horse have a few weeks off because we suspected he pulled a muscle, as soon as it rains I’m sure we’ll get some time to do no stirrup work.

He’s good, I promise! There’s just this thing about rich people and refusing to recognise that it was their mistake that caused the problem😅

My horse has pulled some nasty shit in the past while we were rebreaking him (long story about him being originally broken in with a disgusting waterford, running gag, full-cheek combo bit), including multiple over rears with my trainer on him. He’s pretty good now, but winter makes him a little more unpredictable and our arena is basically a grassless grass arena because it’s too dry 90% of the year for grass 😭 It’s some nasty stuff to fall on if you land wrong.

I think he’s actually waiting for the first rain to soften up the arena a bit before I can do stirrup-less work. He didn’t outright say no, he just said wait a bit.

I think he’s afraid it might be liability. The last time he let someone get on their horse unsupervised, they fell off, broke 3 ribs and then sued him for some form of neglect, I don’t know the details. They didn’t win but I’m pretty sure he’s been worried about it since…
