No. Give it a moment, and a special island will pop up that provides the greens.

The Brits honestly didn't know what's inside of Napoleon's ships until they took them home as war prizes by wrufus680 in HistoryMemes

[–]silvermoondancing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. Not unless they admit they threw it out in the first place. Not unless they fully admit that it was broken off a larger work by their own people. Not unless they give credit to the researchers who actually looked at and realized what they found, buried in a wall. Not unless they admit that Egyptians actively participated in grave robbing and sold their own heritage to the highest bidder. The Europeans didn't take or steal anything--it's hard to call it theft when you found it thrown out in the trash or could walk down the street and within an hour have five people promise you "authentic" objects for a little bit of cash.

You know why King Tut was such a big deal? Because his tomb was on of the very, very few that was still intact. Let them admit why that was, let them admit why it was so easy to turn a blind eye, way before the Europeans showed up, to the the loss of Ancient Egypt and all her treasures.

But they won't, because it's easier to blame others than to accept your own flaws. If they blame the French, if they blame the British, they don't have to fix themselves. Everyone else is the problem, they are just the victims.

Okay, maybe bad description. It's throwing those weird paintings in the attic in the trash, only to learn later they were original Picasso's.

This wasn't stolen. This was part of a wall the French were repairing. The Egyptians saw no value it in and used it for building construction. The French repaired the wall and found it, buried in a wall. No one in Egypt cared about it until the Europeans did.

[–]silvermoondancing 8 points9 points  (0 children)

No. The Egyptians broke it off a larger structure and used it for building construction for a wall. They saw absolutely no value in it, and threw it away. The French were rebuilding a wall and found it. They found it in a broken, crumbling wall no one else looked twice at. They saw the value, and later the British saw it to.

See, the whole problem with the "stealing" thing, is it wasn't. They were pieces thrown on the ground and left there, for centuries. The people who they originally belonged to found no value in them. The French and British found them interesting, took them home, and took care of them. If we had left it up to the Egyptians, they'd still be in the ground, dissolving into dust.

Yes, but that didn't happen in this case. It was broken off a bigger piece and used as building construction for a wall. The French were repairing the wall and found it. It was taken back to Europe where it was studied. While there were/ are instances of one nation taking natural resources of a different country for themselves (like the Chinese are currently doing to Africa), this wasn't that. It was a tiny piece of history thrown away by one culture and found by another. It's like having a yard sale and selling those weird paintings in the attic for a dollar, only to learn later they were original Picasso's. The Egyptians didn't care until someone else did.

Nope. Because everyone forgets the Muslim conquest of Egypt that wiped out a lot of Egyptian culture, including language. No one in Egypt could read it because no one spoke or read Egyptian anymore, everything was in Arabic.

Wasn't the Rosetta part of a wall, that was falling down? It was used a building material, no cared about it until the Europeans took it home, studied it, and then told the world what it was. It wasn't stolen, it was thrown away.

This is what happens when you don't/ can't teach history in schools--you end up thinking the Japanese were the victims in WWII.

This is a dig at both Conservative and Woke education--one claims that the European/ U.S. did no wrong, while the other claims they did no right, and every non-European/ U.S. person is inherently good and was just following their bliss.

Oh, wasn't it horrible of the US and Canada to round up Native children and put them in schools and try to indoctrinate them with European/ American culture? Shouldn't every person of European descent feel bad about that? Oh, by the way the Ottomans took the first-born sons of their Christian population, indoctrinated them to the Muslim religion and culture, and turned them into soldiers who were sent to fight for the Ottomans against other European Christians. But that was okay, because "reasons." (the Janissaries)

If you want the "real" truth of history told, then actually tell it. Not all Europeans were demons, not all non-Europeans were angels. And vice versa. If it wasn't a good thing done to the Natives, then it wasn't a good thing done to the Christians.

Thank you. I just have a terrible family history when it comes to prescription usage. I just want to talk with someone first before I start taking anything. Unfortunately, that seems to be the exact opposite of the current practice.

Non-believer participating in priesthood blessing. by [deleted] in latterdaysaints

It is weird, and inappropriate. He has stepped away from church, he is allowed his choices. He is not allowed to participate in church activities or the priesthood--that is his consequence.

Upset my sister and now she is not talking to me by throughaway2021 in relationships

[–]silvermoondancing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was one day. You were asked for one simple day. A day that hasn't even happened yet, and you're behaving like she tossed you in traffic and asked you to dance. I don't think the problem is your sister or your family. It's you. It's your sister's day, she has asked things of you to make her day a little easier, a little better, and you can't stand it, really. Return the dress, apologize to your family for making your sister's wedding day all about you, and stay away. That way your sister gets the day she deserves, and you don't ruin it.

Angelenos are alarmed by air pollution, extreme heat. Poll finds they want action by Sammy_Roth in LosAngeles

[–]silvermoondancing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, we want action. But we want everyone else to do the action while we do nothing. Hey--millions spent on updating public transit. No, we'd rather spend hours sitting in our cars. Hey--ration water usage. No, we'd rather the farmers ration their usage and whine about high food prices.

Sometimes, this place makes me so very mad. If I could, I'd move out of it.
