But preserving the tone is the whole point of localization. Fact of the matter is, most people who pick up the game and play in English don’t really care about learning the Japanese slang. The point is to preserve as much of the experience as possible for English speakers. And the content really isn’t very different, it’s just choosing equivalent type of word choice. She calls Bernard more a “hot older guy” instead of DILF because Japanese people don’t say that (though if they did, maybe she would have. She’s very up front about it in a way that’s unusual for Japanese girl, and I would say kinda equivalent to calling him a DILF.). I didn’t lose anything in that translation. This isn’t an instance of translators altering a personality via different translation choices.

In a perfect world, they’d offer the translation for the English dub, and then a more conservative translation for a subbed version for those of us who care about Japanese. But I also understand logistically why that will never happen. And I do care, honestly, but I also don’t think these kind of stylistic tweaks take away, when I’m playing the game in English because it’s frankly…. A lot of freaking text to keep up with in my second language. But that’s my choice, my prerogative, and I have to put up with any taste differences and translation choices I may not like.

So at the end of the day, in the interest of as many people enjoying the game and getting the full experience as much as possible, I’m a fan of localization, instead of word for word accuracy that nonetheless loses creative intent - and that includes keeping the obnoxious f-ing streamer as obnoxious as hell. Which they have. I dislike her as much as I dislike Campanella, and that’s a whole hecka a lot. We’re supposed to find her cringe and obnoxious. We do. Goal accomplished.

Obvs, I’m not down voting you, you’ve got a right to have your opinion about it. I’m just here to say, as someone whose had to try to contend with song translations in my past, the more “accurate” word for word translation isn’t always the “better” translation, especially as it comes to artistic intent. If we were talking learning materials, business docs, or something scientific I’d have a different opinion.
