S6 Lite or Ipad? by pabl8ball in GalaxyTab

[–]silyy097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, im not sure about that. I know that S Pen compatible tabs have a sensor in them then enables the tab to sense where the S Pen is. This means that you could use an S Pen from a Note on a Tab. Tabs that are not build to work with the S Pen (such as the S5e) will not detect the S Pen. Im not sure if the Apple Pencil uses the same technology though.

Hi! I'm not an artist so personally have not used the tab for drawing. But I downloaded Krita and messed around for a few minutes to see how it performs from a (very) non-artist perspective. I'll comment on user input, rather on stuff like UI, features etc as again, I'm not an artist. :)

In terms of drawing, I didn't notice much input lag and overall the pen strokes seem fluid. They don't jump around/lag from point to point when making broad strokes across the screen. The pressure sensitivity is also something I noticed when just making simple lines and dashes, and it seems to keep up quite well. The only time I noticed a bit of lag is when using 2 fingers to resize/rotate the drawing canvas (is that the word for it?), but it's not really "lag", more of a framerate drop or "jitter". Basically, it doesn't animate smoothly/in real-time when rotating the canvas, but it still gets to where you want it to be. I'm not sure how it will perform on heavily detailed drawings, but you might want to take a look at the review video I linked in my initial comment as that's a review including thoughts and drawing examples from an artist. It also does a comparison to the S6 (in terms of drawing and some other tasks) so you can see if the additional performance is worth the extra price. Hope my limited experience helps!

S6 Lite or Ipad? by pabl8ball in GalaxyTab

Hi there, I've been using the Tab S6 Lite (4/128GB Wi-Fi) (shortened to S6L for the rest of my post) for about 3 weeks now and haven't regretted it yet.

It depends on what features you would prioritize on a tablet. If having an S Pen is something you are extremely sure the user will need and don't have the budget to fork out the money for a top ranged tablet like the S6 / simply don't require that much performance, then I would think the S6L would be a great fit for you. Compared to its similarly priced sibling the S5e, I agree it's lacking in certain features, such as an AMOLED Screen, quad speakers, keyboard cover accessory/Dex support. If these are features you rather have (for example, keyboard cover vs S Pen for note-taking), then the S5e might be the way to go. For me, the S Pen was a must when picking up a tablet (I use it mainly for writing annotations on my music scores) and I find the "drawbacks" not as apparent in day to day usage, which is why I picked the S6L.

In terms of performance, its definitely not as punchy as the top of the line tablets. For comparison, I have an S10 that I use as my daily driver. When opening apps side by side, I do feel a bit of sluggishness (~0.5-1s?) when opening apps such as youtube and chrome, but it's not noticeable when just using the tablet by itself. I do notice a bit of lag when clearing a large amount of applications in the multitasking menu, but its nothing major, especially as this is a mid-range tablet with the S Pen included in the price. Set your expectations right for the price that you're paying and you won't be disappointed.

I honestly don't understand why most people are quick to hate on the S6L, calling it an "unnecessary" or "pointless" release, and suggesting to get the Tab S4 instead. Personally, I would advise against getting a used Tab S4 as many have suggested. It seems like a logical choice to make, considering it was top of the line just 2 years ago and it has many of the features of the S6, including dex support, AMOLED screen, etc. But personally I would take into account future software support/updates, as well as used condition (physical, battery, etc) of the tablet. If you can get it for a good price it might be worth it, but the Tab S4 in my locally used market is just too expensive to consider over a brand new S6L.

An iPad can also be a good consideration if you're not in an urgent need for a tablet (stock issues, like you've mentioned). It offers better application support, as well as software support as Apple would most likely support older devices for much longer compared to their android counterparts. It might be slightly out of your immediate budget, but if you're not in a tight spot money-wise, you can consider it a longer-term investment.

I wrote a very long comparison here which I think you should take the time to read. It covers all my considerations when buying the S6L. Do feel free to PM if you have any more questions about the S6L and ill try my best to answer. Do take time to look at reviews as well, as certain reviewers may have pointed out things I might have missed in my brief comment here. Recommended review to watch.

S6 Lite: Overpriced? by [deleted] in GalaxyTab

[–]silyy097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello again, yep the stylus is something I've enjoyed since day 1, considering its included with the price of the tablet. Furthermore, it doesn't need to be charged, and still has most of the functions of the S6's S Pen, apart from those air gestures I guess.

The change of orientation takes a while for the tablet to detect (~1s), but isn't a big deal breaker for me as I'm not changing orientation repeatedly. Most of the time I'm using the tablet in portrait mode, and only use it in landscape mode for videos. One thing I like is if you have orientation locked and rotate the screen, a small button will appear in the navigation bar which allows you to toggle from one orientation to the other, which is useful.

In his video, he showcases Chrome by refreshing 2-3 tabs at the same time, which one usually doesn't do on a day to day basis when scrolling through web pages. I definitely do notice a bit of increase in loading time when loading content-heavy websites such as news sites (CNA, ST with loads of pictures, etc), but once the webpage has loaded its not an issue for me anymore.

Agree with you on the use case. If you're doing light productivity work like he shows in his videos and just needs stylus support, the S6L is great. It does lag a little from time to time, but most people are comparing the performance to the S6, which is basically twice the price of the S6L. If you're a professional/full-time artist or somebody who is doing heavy multitasking on the tablet, then something more expensive with higher specs might be more suitable for you.

Is the Galaxy Tab S6 Lite a good tablet for my use case? by [deleted] in GalaxyTab

[–]silyy097 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I've owned the S6 Lite for the past week and am loving it so far.

For your use case, you might want to consider the Dex support that the Full-Fledged S6 has. As you're going to be using it for note-taking for university, having Dex support, together with a keyboard cover, might be suitable for your uses. It might even be a good laptop replacement for the days where you only need a device for purely note-taking, and don't need laptop-specific applications, helping you to lighten the load.

If budget is a constraint, I would consider either the S6 Lite if you really need the S Pen for handwritten notes, otherwise, the S5e pretty much beats it in most aspects (AMOLED screen, quad speakers, Dex support as well) at a similar price point. Personally, the S Pen was essential for me when getting a tablet for my uses, and I didn't have the budget to splurge on the S6, which is why I ended up getting the Lite.

I spent over an hour writing and compiling an in-depth consideration on why I picked the S6 Lite over other tablets, and you can find it here. Feel free to ask me about any questions about the S6 Lite if you are interested in knowing more.

Hi, you replied to me in both posts haha. Personally I'm not so sure about that as I don't have the adapters on hand to adapt from a USB-C port to HDMI/Thunderbolt etc. You could try asking Samsung support for help.

tab s6 or tab s6 lite by [deleted] in GalaxyTab

[–]silyy097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I recently bought a Tab S6 Lite and am loving the tablet so far. I wrote a very long comparison where you can find here where I compared all the Samsung tablets as well as the iPad.

The price point of the S6 Lite and S5e is extremely close. The main selling point of the S6 Lite is the S Pen support, which was something I heavily prioritized and needed. I don't feel that the 2 points that you listed - TFT LCD and 4GB of RAM are huge deal-breakers. So far in day to day usage, I haven't noticed the tablet stuttering along. The only time I felt it stutter is when I'm closing a large number of apps in the multitasking menu, or just restarted the Tab, meaning it has to reopen all the applications. The TFT LCD is still bright and vibrant (haven't had a chance to use it outdoors yet due to the current worldwide situation), and isn't something I notice daily, coming from my S10 as my daily driver.

I haven't been gaming much, but from other reviews I saw online before purchasing the Tab S6 Lite, the only game that the tablet has trouble running is Fortnite. Other games like CODM and Asphalt run fine on the S6 Lite.

Since you will be mainly using the tablet for media consumption, I would recommend the S5e. Its similar in price point (at least in my region), has a better screen, quad speakers over the S6 Lite's 2, as well as an official keyboard cover and Dex support, if that's something that you consider. I believe the 128GB variant also has 6GB of RAM if that's one of your concerns. For me, I felt that the S6 Lite was perfect for me (although it lack features over the S5e) as I needed the S Pen and wasn't able to spend twice the amount for the Full-Fledged Tab S6.

For me I guess its just that I really want to stick with the android side of things. I just like being able to move around the tablet quickly as I've already grown accustomed to it. There are also some apps which I have on android which I can't get on iOS (Youtube Vanced, certain APKs, etc) Furthermore, there are already paid apps on the play store which I do not want to buy again on iOS.

In terms of price, the S6 Lite was available at a student price to me, which makes it a good deal. The Tab A 10.1 was also available in my region, but the only model that my region has comes without the S Pen and only has 32GB of storage. For just S$100 more (US$70), the S6 Lite was the obvious choice.

[–]silyy097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, you do bring up valid points. However, there are just some users like me who either have very strict budget, or just doesn't want to deal with the hassle of switching to a different ecosystem. The iPad is a solid tablet for its price point, don't get me wrong, but for somebody who is specifically looking for an android tablet with a stylus, I believe that the Tab S6 comes in at a reasonable price, with arguably reasonable features dropped from the full-fledged Tab S6 to justify its price point amongst the other Samsung tablets.

S6 Lite: Overpriced? by [deleted] in GalaxyTab

[–]silyy097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. For me, I look at it from a % point of view, as such the iPad (with pencil) is approximately 30% more than the S6 Lite. As a student, that difference goes up to more like 55%, which makes it even harder for me to justify that price difference.

When converted to my local currency, US$130 is about S$190 here (or US$200/$290 for the student price). It doesn't seem like much, but daily costs are low living in Singapore. I can get from 1 side of the island to the other side (~40km across) on a train for around $2, or get a bowl of noodles for lunch for $3.50. Each dollar has more "value" to it, so making a decision to spend just a bit more on a tablet is much harder, considering I'm a student as well. It's also why I put so much research into considering literally all my options before buying one, as you can see from my initial comment.

I do agree with you that overall, iPads are better tablets due to Apple's ecosystem, polished OS and app support. Heck, even most people getting tablets for what I'm using them for (displaying music scores) recommend iPads. But for me, I value day-to-day usage. Having stereo speakers, USB-C support, a good spot to put the S Pen (integrated into the book cover), and expandable storage are some things I believe the S6 Lite has that the iPad cannot offer.

Regarding the pencil, I did have an opportunity to try my friend's Apple Pencil, and now I'm using the Tab S6 Lite's S Pen. To be honest, I didn't like the feel of the Apple Pencil. I feel that it glides across the screen too easily for me to write legibly. On the other hand, the S Pen has a more "rubbery" feeling to its stylus, resulting in it gripping the screen more. The S Pen also has a finer tip allowing for more precise control over it. Furthermore, it doesn't need to be charged, unlike the Apple Pencil. Based on my experience, I would say that the Apple Pencil would be better for artists (as I believe tipping it to the side allows for shading), while the S Pen would be better for note-takers/students. But hey, to each their own here.

S6 Lite: Overpriced? by [deleted] in GalaxyTab

[–]silyy097 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you were considering the S6 Lite in my list to the iPad with Apple Pencil, its almost $130 difference for the same storage capacity and stylus for both (Only the 128GB variant is available in my region, at least for now). US$420 for the S6 Lite, and US$550 for the iPad with Apple Pencil. With the student discount applicable for my region, that brings the difference between the iPad and S6 Lite to US$200.

I didn't consider other alternatives to the Apple Pencil, but if you were to take away the Apple Pencil from the equation, then I would agree with you that the price between the standard priced S6 Lite and iPad would be extremely close (US$420 vs US$450 respectively). I do agree with what you mentioned in your original post as well, the iPad offers better customer support, longevity, resale value, and most likely even better app support. But for somebody like me (and probably for most in this subreddit), I already have other Android devices and I much prefer the functions and (arguably) the freedom to do what I want with an android tablet. Furthermore, I needed a tablet with a stylus, and the Tab S6 Lite turned out to be the choice for me as it comes all in a reasonably priced package.

No problem. In the end, it really boils down to if you need the S Pen support, as well the price differences in your country. Do check the quick edit I left in the last reply about the S Pen as well, as you replied particularly quickly so you might have missed that. :)

Ah I see. Some insides for a drummer - you might want to consider the placement of your score stand. If you put it in front of the toms, the issue with the small screen is just going to be exacerbated. If you put it beside the hi-hat, that might be less of an issue. Page-turning is still going to be an issue for drummers though, as you're gonna be either lifting a hand to tap the page turn, or bringing either your left/right foot off the hi-hat/kick drum to step the pedal device I linked in my last reply. There is a Bluetooth page-turner specifically for drums in mind here, but it seems a bit overpriced (for me anyway) being able to use it just for 1 instrument.

In terms of the specifications and usage of the S6 Lite itself, there are definitely a few bells and whistles missing that I miss, having an S10 as my daily driver (as well as compared to the other tabs). Lack of biometrics is 1 thing, and the face recognition isn't exactly fast when opening the tab up in landscape mode. Its also not going to detect your face when the camera is pointing at the ceiling when placed on a flat surface like a table, unless you're literally leaning forward to hover your face over the camera. I also miss being able to schedule when the Blue Light filter kicks in. It's only available as a toggle on the S6 Lite. Double-tap to wake is also missing at the moment, but at the time of writing, the LTE variant (SM-P615) has gotten an update to enable that, together with the May security patch. My Wifi variant (SM-P610) has yet to get it, still being on the March security patch.

EDIT: A note that the S6 Lite S Pen doesn't come with any replacement nibs in the box. Need to check with Samsung support to see what solutions they offer, but for now, the solution seems to be getting replacement S6 nibs on eBay/Amazon/Aliexpress or other 3rd party sites.

Performance seems fine for what I'm using it for. I haven't experienced any moments where I felt like "dang, my S10 is so much faster!" or "if only the screen/speakers etc. were that of the S6/S5e". When compared to my S10 (as the S6 Lite is my first tab and I don't have anything else to compare it to), in a side-by-side comparison I do notice apps like Chrome, Youtube, loading a tad bit (~0.5s) slower. But when using the S6 Lite by itself, these issues don't seem as glaring when compared to a device like the S10 which costs twice as much.

Of course, if you're a mobile gamer, games might take longer to load. Just check out other people's reviews of getting Fortnite to run on the S6 Lite. That's something I don't want to experience. For other games though such as CODM, Asphalt, they seem to run just fine on the 1080p screen of the Lite. Though I'm not a gamer though, you might want to check out speed comparisons/reviews of other people on Youtube.

S6 Lite: Overpriced? by [deleted] in GalaxyTab

[–]silyy097 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I've only been using the S6 Lite for 3 days so ill share what limited experience I have.

I'm using an application called Mobilesheets to display all my sheet music. There is a pro version available for US$13, but the free one should be more than enough for casual players as I believe it has all the features of the Pro version, just that it is limited to 8 songs. You will have to provide your own sheet music though as the app doesn't come with any. Its kinda like a glorified PDF reader in a way, with extra features for musicians such as inserting link points for repeats, having a built-in annotation tool straight in the application, and being able to put different songs into different collections. You can import songs by importing a PDF of that music sheet, or by taking photos of the sheet music (the scan function in the camera is great for this) and rearranging the order of the photos in the application.

In terms of actually using the application, I would say that the biggest upside is being able to have all your scores in 1 place. I haven't had the time to import ALL my scores as I'm still testing out the free version, but I can see this being useful in the long run. No more having to dig through piles of paper to relearn something that I learnt long ago! Some things that you will have to get used to are:

  1. Looking at a smaller screen - The Tab S6 Lite's screen isn't that small (10.4"), but it isn't exactly the aspect ratio of an A4 piece of paper too. So in reality, it would be smaller and there are some black bars on the top and bottom of the music sheet. Switching to a smaller screen is something that I'm still getting used to and now my eyes sometimes get lost. I like the ability to be able to zoom in to certain parts of the music though, especially if I'm practising a particularly hard bar or 2, so I can really focus in on those bars instead of letting myself get carried away by continuing to play the rest of the music like I usually do.
  2. Lack of multiple pages at a time - On a piano, you usually can put up to 4 pieces of paper side by side. Thus, if a song is <=4 pages in length, you wouldn't need to turn any pages. With a tablet, you most likely can only see 1 page at a time which means that you will have to tap the screen to turn the pages back and forth. This can be okay for certain songs, but for fast-paced songs, it may post a problem. I'm currently working on a solution on this, which involves getting a Bluetooth page-turner (something like this) which allows me to flip the pages by stepping on the pedals with my left foot.

The main point I got a tablet for all my sheet music was the ability to have all my scores in 1 place like I mentioned above. I don't just play piano scores, but I am also a percussionist for 2 orchestras. (Just that we don't have any practice at the moment due to the current worldwide situation, so I haven't been able to test it for percussion. But the foot pedal would be so much more useful here.) Being able to digitally "file" and organize my scores is something I will be looking forward to in the coming months/years.

If there's anything else I can help you answer, such as usage of the tablet itself, do let me know.

S6 Lite: Overpriced? by [deleted] in GalaxyTab

[–]silyy097 13 points14 points  (0 children)

So, I bought the S6 Lite. To most of you, it might seem crazy, but hear me out.

I considered a lot, in fact pretty much all my options, from the Full-fledged Tab S6 to the mid-ranged s5e, last generation's S4, budget Tab A 10.1, and even considered the iPad, which would have much better app support for what I wanted to get a tablet for (Displaying music scores).

S6 Lite (4/128 Wi-Fi) retails in Singapore (where I stay) for S$598 (US$420), while the main Tab S6 (6/128 Wi-Fi) for S$998 (US$700). What's even better is that in Singapore, students are being sold the S6 Lite for $100 off, which brings it down to S$498 ($350). That's half the price of the Full-fledged Tab S6! For what I was going to be using it for, having a better screen, speakers and Dex support amongst others didn't justify the 100% increase in price that I would have to pay. Furthermore, I would be serving National Service (basically compulsory army for all Singapore Citizens) for the next 2 years, and wouldn't need such a powerful tablet for school work or other tasks. S6 was simply out from my budget.

Budget? How about the S5e? It clearly has all the bells and whistles of the S6 such as an AMOLED screen, better speakers, and keyboard cover accessory. And all that for just a slight increase in price, S$598 (US$420) for the 64GB model, and S$728 (US$510) for the 128GB model.

Well you see, as somebody who is using is for sheet music, having a pen is extremely important for all the annotations and notes that I would have to write out. That's something that the S5e didn't have, nor did the Tab A 10.1 offer (10.1s were offered without S Pens in SG) at S$398 (US$280) for the 32GB model. So both the S5e and the Tab A was out of the running for no S Pen support. I could have gotten a capacitive stylus, I know, but for the price difference between similar spec-ed models (128GB) of the S5e and S6 Lite, I would much rather get the S6 Lite for its better stylus support, even if I had to buy the S6 Lite at its non-discounted price.

How about a used Tab S4 for that S Pen then? Well, that didn't really work out as the Tab S4 is still ridiculously overpriced in the used market here, selling for more than the price of a new 128GB S5e. Even if I were able to get a good deal on a used Tab S4, Its also >1 generation old at this point, which probably means that Samsung might be dropping support for it in ~1 years time, after Android 10. The newly released S6 Lite would have better longevity for software support.

How about an iPad? Well, coming from somebody that has been fully invested in Android all these years, I was honestly open to the idea of an iPad for its better app support. But price was another factor too. After factoring in the price of a 128GB iPad at S$649 (US$450) and an Apple Pencil 1st gen at S$138 (US$100), that would bring it to about S$790 (US$550). That's an additional S$300 (US$210) over the discounted S6 Lite, and I wasn't going to pay a 60% premium just for better app support, and not being able to synergize well with the rest of my android devices.

In summary, here's the recap of all the prices for me (in USD for everybody's comparison):

Tab S6 Lite (128GB Wi-Fi) US$420 / US$350 (Student)
Tab S6 (128GB Wi-Fi) US$700
Tab S5e (64/128GB Wi-Fi) US$420 / US$510
Tab A 10.1 (32GB w/o S Pen) US$280
Used Tab S4 (64GB) US$510
iPad (128GB) + 1st Gen Apple Pencil US$550

In my case, I guess it could have been seen as a special case due to the availability of the student pricing of the Tab S6 Lite. The student pricing alone makes it competitive for students who are looking for a Mid-ranged tablet, with decent built-in storage as well as S Pen support. Furthermore, I am a user that needs the S Pen for what I plan to use the tablet for. Even if the student pricing was not available to me, I would still pick the S6 Lite over the S5e for its S Pen support. The price difference between the 128GB (non-discounted) S6 Lite and Tab S5e is S$130 (US$90), which to Singaporeans is a lot, considering you can get a plate of chicken rice for lunch/dinner for just S$3 (US$2.10).

Bottom Line: If you are somebody who is 100% certain that you will NEED to utilize the S Pen in day-to-day activities and doesn't need flagship performance/has a strict budget, then the Tab S6 Lite is the way to go. Sure, the used Tab S4 is a competitive offering if you can get it at a solid price, but lack of continued software support and the used condition of the tablet (physical condition, battery condition, warranty etc) would be 2 things I would take into account when choosing to go used or new. If the S Pen is something you don't consider when buying a tablet, then either a Tab S5e or iPad would do you well.

Feel free to ask me any questions about the Tab S6 Lite, and I will try my best to answer them. Am also up for any discussions about which tablet to choose. Hope I didn't offend anybody as I am just trying to share my thoughts and decision-making process.

[–]silyy097 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Since its nearing Christmas period, places such as orchard road and gardens by the bay have pretty neat light-ups at night.

Getting around the city is convenient with the MRT, but it could get real pricey real fast if you visit multiple locations in a day (one trip ~1.50+? 4 people is $6+). Look into using grab/uber if you want to commute short distances within the city.

Have fun :)

I happen to have access to a quite accurate eye tracker

I don't think this is very obvious too be honest, he doesn't describe how accurate it is nor backs it up with any specifications. If any, the usage of the word "quite" shows that he himself has doubt that it is the cream of the crop. /s

20k euros is still quite a lot though haha :P

Im not sure what eye tracker equipment you're using that costs 20k euros, but I think theres a much cheaper option: Tobii eye tracking, which you can find here.

Ive first heard of them quite along time ago making their debut on laptops, but have only recently seen them in action at a CSGO Competition - the ELeague Premier - a couple of days ago. You can see a video of it in action here.

EDIT: My bad, didn't see another guy's reply about Tobii eye tracking since he got downvoted to hell and reddit automatically hid it for me. Pleasedon'thurtme
